Snowflakes Thread: Coaching vs. Ohio State

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

I am actually in Ann Arbor using a browser on a small tablet, so if this works, awesome for me (not for the game) -

This will be your thread for snowflakes and hot takes regarding the overall quality of the coaching versus Ohio State.

Just awful today. Honestly, this season was about at expectations. It was average, maybe slightly above. I expected 8-4 plus a bowl win that included one win against a rival. We went 9-3, bowl to be determined, but lost to both rivals, one an ass kicking, and lost our other marquee game of the year. Which basically means we were at expectations. This season, at face value, was just as expected. Nothing to be terribly excited or even pissed about. But we can see a foundation there. It will forever be a foundational season for me- with not much else to look upon

Only down 4 at half...outgaining, more first downs, 8/11 on 3rd down. Then the second half happened. 28-3, utter domination in all phases. If we came out flat, it would've happened from the opening bell.

Harbaugh and the offensive staff did all they could with the cards they had, but the D has an all-american corner, a fantastic DL and that Peppers guy. We are just as talented as any D the Bucks have faced, if not more so. And the D is just as talented as MSU, 1 to 11. We don't have a Calhoun, but the DE is not solely responsible for stopping the run.

Defensive scheme lost the game, plain and simple.

The punt block call was horrible, why don't you take the ball at your own 40? Not calling a timeout when our D was gassed and on its heels before the second touchdown was dumbfounding. Not starting Smith, so he could find a rhythm, was stupid. Having Perry anywhere on the field, over Ways, cost us all year. We got out coached.

Do you not remember how bad it was before this year? You have to come up a long way from the absolute rock bottom the team was in. On average the special teams got MUCh better this year.

As for the high profile mistakes I think it comes down to two things. 1. The Hoke derp doesn't go away in just one year and 2. The team just started to look tired, I think having to maintain that level of intensity all year started to wear on guys who were both starting and then playing on Special teams.

Even with all that NFL coaching pedigree on the sidelines, it's the same old result. It's just goes to prove that it's not the X's and O's, it's the Johnnys and the Joes.

If we are ever to beat OSU ever again, the players must be much, much better than the current crop. Harbaugh cannot afford to sign unknown, under the radar 3 star types. I think he's trying.

Yeah those darn guys who might still be growing into their frames, have been evaluated in person for how they take coaching, and made the effort to go to the camps and see the program, how dare they try to recruit hungry under the radar guys like Jake Ryan, Willie Henry and the Glasgow brothers, you just can't win with guys like that /s.

They're going after the big fish, too. But I'm more inclined to trust the coaches over pure star chasing.

And stop using peppers in obvious ways when the D is obviously keying on him. That screen was a horrible call, did they think no one would follow him. It reminded me of the dumb ways the lions used bush.

Durkin was awful...I hate that he NEVER adjusted all game.

At some point you have to try something different.

Whatever happened to being "multiple" when the season started? The 3-4 and the 4-3...that's all everyone talked about.

The 3-man front got DESTROYED

At some point you have to adjust and go:

DL: Charlton-Hurst-Henry-Wormley/

LB: Ross-Morgan-Bolden

CB: Lewis-Stribling

S: Wilson-Peppers

....Durkin never adjusted and he lost control of the game.

I disagree Yost. Adjustments were made, but OSU immediately counter punched and burned us deep. Bottom line, they're a far more talented and deep team than Michigan. It not hard to see why, nor is there any shame in it being so. The front did ok, it was the LB's who were worthless.

SimplyComplex

has to fall on the players though. Even if he did make these adjustments, who knows if they would have positive results. The DL got little push, the LBs couldn't tackle & The secondary couldn't make plays in space. I'm not saying that Durkin shouldn't get blamed but let's think about how the players actually performed first.

Durkin's gameplan was pretty bad. It felt like I was watching an NCAA video game where you cannot bring the safeties into the box. We didn't get out of 6 men in the box until it was too late. Against this type of offense, going 6 in the box is a recipe for disaster. Add on top of that that our linebackers are the weakest part of the defense and were guaranteed to face releasing OL with 3 DL. Bad, bad gameplan.

Okay, maybe we wouldn't have stopped them anyway given our injuries, but at least try something different.

I am a bit nervous about Durkin's results against spread-to-run offenses. Indiana and Ohio State destroyed our defense, and Minnesota had a good day against it, too. I really hope injuries played into it. And also that our linebackers will improve. But from what I understand from some Florida fans, the LBs weren't great under Durkin at Maryland.

Obviously, this is not a FIRE DURKIN opinion. But he has to figure out a way to slow down spread to run offenses.

9-3 is much better than the 7 or 8 wins most predicted. This is Harbaugh's floor, not ceiling. Maybe more time on game planning instead of busting his nut on Bo's grave would be more effective time management. JH (9-3) now has more regular season losses as a B10 coach than Urban Meyer (46-2).

Yes, I absolutely do.

Our lack of D-line rotation led to our d-line being exhausted in the second half, which led to more weight being put on the line backers.Or you dumbasses can keep calling for the heads of an excellent coaching staff in their first year. Some of you guys are horrible to root for a team with,

Our players sent good enough. Home was a terrible recruiter who couldn't assess talent much less develop it. We're so bad at running back we have to play our nickel at RB. These guys except for a few were not good enough, no amount of scheming wins that game.

AlwaysBlue

to make a statement. Some of that was inspired by last week and some by all of the Harbaugh hype. The offensive game plan was fine, they just couldn't put it in the end zone. The defensive plan worked well enough the first half but was blown up in the second. Maybe nothing would have worked but watching Harbaugh and Durkin just stand there as Ohio State rammed the ball down Michigan's throat was frustrating as hell. And for all the bitching about the LB's speed, it wasn't lack of speed that kept them glued on their blocker

I feel confident the coaches now understand the urgent need for better players across the board. They have to erase 4 years of poor recruiting by Hoke. Hoke did bring in some players that are solid and may have a chance at the NFL. But. Let won't

But the days offering slow, lumbering guys like Strobel, Godin, Poggi, Braden, and especially Bolden has to end. Every guy Harbaugh offers needs to have the size, speed, and God given ability to beat State and OSU.

That play burned us all season, and has for years.  It seems like we just don't have an answer for it.

Way back in the day when the wishbone was popular, Michigan was masterful at defending it - even amazing wishbone teams like Auburn and Oklahoma struggled to move against us.  We always had a man dedicated to stopping the QB, and maintained the edge when he was forced to pitch.

For some reason, we can't do the same against a good read-option team.  The QB always seems to gash us, eventually opening up the edge.

It's amazing to me that a team can absolutely destroy our defense with such a predictable offense. Same play, over and over.

Of course personnel has much to do with our struggles, but our players do fine against power or pro-style offense.

Seems to me we need to add a zone-read guru to the defensive staff, and practice against it every day, so by the time we face OSU it's second nature.

It's not really the same play but ton of variation of the play with different blocking scheme. Read off DE, OLB and even the DT but the unpredictability of the type of zone read makes it hard for defenders to key on certain players

The only thing that fixes any of today's derp is ... recruiting and unless Durkin could spend halftime getting 5-6 players recruited, signed and suited up, there was nothing helping that shit show.  I'm still happy with the season results considering most of us thought we had a 8 or 7 win ceiling at best this year.  Our biggest weakness (LBs) was exposed today - kudos to the other team.  They played their strength against our weakness. I mean what adjustment was Durkin going to make - play goalline every down?  I'm not saying he gets a pass, but damn the talent gap was painfully obvious.  I'm still proud of this team, and I'm looking forward to the bowl game and next year.

I think when they punted from the 36 on the first drive my hackles went up, it felt like a turtling move and from then on I think Urban smelled blood. They need to figure out the read option STAT!

I certainly think Michigan won games this season because of superior coaching. However, it is hard to be excited after that turd they laid today. Michigan seems to have always had troubled stopping mobile QBs. Doesn't matter who the coach is, no one seems to have an answer. I hope Harbaugh can figure out how to beat Urbz. Otherwise we will have a team that beats up on the rest of the conference but still can't win the big game. So yeah, I hope Harbaugh doesn't turn out to be our own John Cooper.

We got thoroughly outclassed today, but some of these comments are utterly ridiculous. I'm not saying the coaches aren't without blame but even Belichick, Carroll, and yes Harbaugh can make calls that don't work out every time. Harbaugh is one of the finest football coaches at any level in the country.

Calling for Durkin or Baxter's heads after our team played above our heads for most of the year is shortsighted and foolish. Once we get more talent and our players into years 2 and 3 or the system we'll be fine.

not find a better head coach. They just have to kill it in recruiting there the next couple years and coach them up. Then you can annalyze them and decide if you want them or not. I'm pretty sure you guys don't want a schmuck like Urban or Saban. So sit tight and shutup.

When Harbaugh upset Pete Carrol in year 1 at standford he was underestimated by Carrol. Today Harbaugh & Co got Urbans best coaching effort & it showed, it wasnt just missed tackles, there were a lot of open wrs & on a lot of runs were no one touched the runner until he was 5 yds deep. Also, outside of the after the whistle scuffles, it seemed like Urban had his team more amped up for this game than Harbaugh & I think Harbaugh learns from that for next year & there intensity level is much higher.

Lastly, honoring Bump Elliot for this game, the guy who was owned by osu as a coach, would be like osu honoring john cooper next year when we play them in cbus. Maybe they shldve picked a diff game for that. Rooting for Iowa next week! Go Blue!

Block punt penalty was a huge momentum swing & we never recovered. ST looked better for sure this year. But huge bad calls by Baxter in msu... & today.  Why is chesson not returning kicks either? He ran one back earlier in year.

Peppers was on offense a little too much today imo. Would have liked to seem him shadowing Barrett all day.

Punt from their 35 was lame as it gets...as was red zone O play calling.

Get a cool M jacket JH ...& lose the puffy nerd jacket.

If Durkin was interviewing during game week - boot his ass out of here & bring Woodson in. Mattison can groom him in.

After seeing Bolden scared to tackle Elliot - put anybody else in & sit him.

Not one creative offensive play to get momentum early. Drake throwback to Ruddock or something maybe. Peppers wildcat & option play with drake or Smith...with option to throw.

Would like to see JH chew more ass on the sideline - also to inspire. Maybe he does tho & don't see it on tv.

Didn't like seeing JH talking all friendly with urbz before game. Sets a tone for our team. Urbz showed his true colors trying to run up score.
