have been a huge liability in pass defense all year.

Anyone else sick of this defense getting burned on 3rd and longs? I am.
January 1st, 2018 at 4:35 PM ^
It's been happening for the last 10 year, or so. I'm worried it is becoming part of our team DNA.

OC take advantage of Brown's aggressive playing calling, it's why we lose to teams with good qb's and O-lines.
How many times did they let the defense come right on in and then lob the ball over their heads. It's not complicated.
EDIT that's becasue our defense is on the field to much, because our offense sucks
January 1st, 2018 at 4:32 PM ^
or 10 times a game and turns the ball over less than 2 times a game Defense will be fine.

Thanks to the people creating the snowflake threads today - I did not have the will to do it after the game. I was simply too stunned by everything.
On defense, I guess my criticism is that we really need to rethink the safeties in this defense. At this point, everyone seems to have figured out that slants and slot fades work. Granted, I am sitting in my living room and saying this, but still....those throws seem to work more often than they should.
January 1st, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
just my opinion. We drew the worst 8-4 team in the nation, and we lost. Watching all the bowl games i kept thinking I'm glad we dint have to play them. Yet we lose to these clowniesssss!
January 1st, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
Michigan makes you do a hard thing (throw to slots deep between the hashes and sidelines while under pressure) to beat them. These safeties played those well sometimes but also made it an easy throw/catch a few times per game.
I don't know if it's as much of a scheme thing (though that is the weakness of this year's defense) as a need for the players to perform better for this team to reach its ceiling.
It's clear that you're going to get a fair number of slot/safety matchups with a single high safety or zero coverage vs. this defense, but there are counters. Don Brown runs a bunch of various rat coverages to take away the upside/effectiveness of the underneath stuff, and mixes in late zone checks to make it harder to throw middle/deep. The long stuff (slot corners) takes time; the pressure makes that hard to do.
All this is to say I hope Woods and/or Hawkins can break through and we get improvement from Metellus and Kinnell. More likely to see a leap from Metellus but Kinnel made some really nice plays this year/last and could make a jump by being more consistent.
January 1st, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
as usual.
And also as usual the O let them down.
Honestley, would anyone have even noticed a couple successful slants and fades against our secondary if we had been up by 17pts and consistently moving the chains?
I like an agressive D, it has it's weaknesses, but any semi-competent Michigan offense make those flaws moot.
January 1st, 2018 at 7:45 PM ^
They played well enough to win just like nearly every other week. Obviously this is not the side of the ball with the real problems.
The "safeties are awful" folks are way off but I do think this D has a whole 'nother scary gear if the safety play goes from just ok to good/great.

19-3. South Carolina starts with the ball at their 19 yard line. An impossible situation. IMPOSSIBLE!!!!
January 1st, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
Guys, the defense played really well today. What can they do when they only have a 19-3 lead to hold? That's a demoralizing situation. Plus, they'd been on the field three whole minutes in the third quarter when it was 19-3. I mean how can you expect to stop a powerhouse offense like South Carolina's when they start drives at such favorable spots like their own 19 and 25 yard line? They were obviously gassed and they did all they could.
(Did I do it right?)

Don Brown's defense has some flaws and it's rather easy to prepare. Because he always play only man to man. It's easier for an experienced QB to pick it apart. That's why most defense scheme mix zone and man to man to gether. It's just much harder for opponent to prepare that way.
This year, we have watson as nickle and he has been our weak point. Safety coverage is not very good, but it's not like we have much better in the past. The biggest problem of the defense is while they are fast, they are soft. I'v only seen the 1st and 3rd qrt in OSU game, they play physical enough, with had hits, this team does not have enough swagger. Maybe they are Young. but it seems that when Harbagh lost that swagger on the field, the players follow. I hope our depth can be build enough next year, and we can play tougher and more physical defense.
we see that in the past 3 season, but only for a few games, but it fade away when the season went on (due to injury and fatigue)
January 1st, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
The defense does do their parts but obviously they aren't as good as they need to be. When it comes down to it, this defense gives up the big plays on third down over and over again. When they could win the game, they don't To sit there and not even consider getting in some sort of zone so there isn't the chance of a defensive back getting burnt for 30 yards is just silly. They don't do that sort of stuff in the NFL do they as some people say? When it's third and long you want to get off of the field. Next year you cant use the excuse that it's too much for the players to handle as Brown did in his past interview. This defense is great against the descent and bad teams but I don't believe it can win a NC with this stuff happening over and over. That overall ranking doesn't mean shit. The big picture is can you get it done against the good teams.
EDIT!!! Oh...and that whole overload bullshit with learning too much has got to stop. So we've all witnessed the fruit that was bore as a result of this strategy with this young team. It's true to a point but to just stop teaching and not letting these kids keep learning things on the field is a hinderance. Speaking from my own experience, bring it on. I may forget more by learning that much more in the short run but (IN THE LONG RUN), it bears the fruit okay? Do you get it? The current way of thinking is wrong. It's safe but it's not truly the best option. We want the best option in the long run right? So now would be the time to throw the other wrinkles in with some zone now that the season is over. Roll the dice because the current system is broke. You cant argue with me about that.

I'll annoyingly say it again, Michigan needs to stop putting safeties iin coverage against wide receivers. If Brown really wants to play man all over the field, put in another cornerback. You can't cover DeSean Hamilton types with a safety. It seems like teams have adjusted a bit to what MIchigan does defensively, and I'd like to see Brown tweak things in the offseason and plaly a third corner on third down as opposed to another safety.
I'd also favor a few more fake blitzes to do some screen hunting after they've established a rush. At times, I don't know why they aren't fine rushing their front four, which was Hurst, Winovich, Gary, and Solomon on passing downs. I don't know that you absolutely have to blitz as often. At the very least, teams exploited those safety matchups, and it seems clear that Michigan needs to develop a better answer.

Kinnel gets beat far too many times. Twice on that TD drive.
January 1st, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
with Hudson and Bush. Winovich was just a monkey in their wrench all game, and if this was his last game, he played it with gusto. The seniors on the defense deserved a better outcome.

Brown needs to make some adjustments in his scheme. He's had some amazing D line talent the past 2 years that have masked other flaws and the DL will probably take a dip next year.
They almost need to just play corners all over the field in the defensive backfield rather than guys like Metellus and Kinnel given his scheme.

Least of this teams problems........the biggest issue that I see is that they are forced to spend way too much time on the field. The O needs to sustain drives.......too many three and outs.
January 1st, 2018 at 5:52 PM ^
though the larger point is true - our D's primary problem is our offense.

Good, not great or able to pull of the win when they could've.
Safeties are weak.
Scheme needs adjusting, too aggressive too often; prone to huge breaks on easy screen dumps.

A first time OC made y'alls highly touted defense look silly in the 2nd half. #1 pass defense in the country?! Bentley looked like an all-pro slinging it. That pass rush sure was underwhelming! That orange hair BS was the gimmick of the entire year, on January 1st! bwahahaha

Defense was stout today but I kept saying to myself that if we keep sending the house it will bite us in the ass. Sure enough in the 3rd quarter they start tossing screens and low and behold we have nobody out to cover the RB because everyone is blitzing. After they did it one entire series I expected we would adjust because Brown is supposed to be a defensive guru but we didn't do anything different. I know the offensive coachiing was bad but let's not give Brown a pass on today. He should have made some changes and stopped going for the home run on defense every play the whole game.
