This will be your snowflake thread for the offense and offensive playcalling. Ugh.

borges.
For once have original "snowflake" threads instead of this pre planned crap?
Who are the 11% who voted "no"? Fire them, too.
want Borges to stay
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death

Heh. Nice.
beautiful poem.
That piece of shit OC Borges. He's the worst coach in Michigan history
I still give that award to GERG and the beaver
Gerg's units were statistically worse for sure. In my opinion, though, Gerg was working with less talent, didn't get his own offensive staff, and probably had more meddling from the Head Coach than Borges does. Taken in context, I think Borges' management of the offense this year to be on par with anything Gerg threw out there.
The offensive play calling was just that. Offensive play calling.
Pathetic. Pretty much sums it up. Pathetic
If you see ''Fire Borges'' signs all over Michgian Stadium next week, I made them. I'll probably be handing them out as well.
Positive: only 1 game left in the regular season for the offense to embarrass itself.
At Keats blocking seemed better today and I liked the screens.
Funches played horribly. It is amazing how often we are on 3rd and 10+.
159 yards, even with 4 turnovers by the defense.
eh, turnovers lead to short fields. You could expect fewer yards with more turnovers. Not that I'm making any excuses for this offense though
Yeah, but those short fields are the only way they score those 14 points. They got no yards that weren't given to them. Still another day when I call out plays to my wife before they run them. That's BAD. I'm not football smart. Neither is Al Borges.
Think all the snowflake threads are drinking threads.... minus the Staind marathon thread, wait that's drinking too...
It was paintful
Total and Utter Embarrasment.
This has to change now. Borges and Funk need to GTFO. We have never seen a Michigan offense play this poorly. Ever.
6 yards of O in the second half until the last drive. Refusal to be anything but predictable. No toughness on the line. Joke. Sad. Pitiful. Crap. Garbage. Inexcusable mess. Junk.
+1000000
All our RBs are useless and can't block, and our only competent receiver is a 5th year senior Rodriguez recruit. Keep Ferrigno for special teams but fire the part of him that coaches TEs.
Our running backs are useless? Green and Smith have ran well considering the blocking. They just aren't getting carries. Are you saying Funchess isn't a good receiver? Chesson has showed some bright spots. Our most promising receiver has been injured all year. I don't understand how you can say we don't have receivers
At least it's basketball season!
Al Borges is by far the worst but Brady is the head coach. I also think that Mattison lost it in the 4th quarter too. The play where Iowa ran for 14 yards with three offset down linemen was one of the worst defensive calls I have ever seen (I could have ran for ten) and that first down is what gave them the gimme FG. If Brady doesn't get rid of Borges (after the OSU loss), than he should be let go too. There aren't any excuses for the crap that us fans are forced to watch, week after week, from this offense...
D played pretty well... Yes 2 drives they did poorly but overall with the 4 TOs they did more than was needed to win the game. I am happy with the defense. All the offense is the problem.
Another great Borgy call was finally putting 4 WR on the field and then running the ball for a loss. If Borges isn't fired at the end of the year because Hoke is protecting him then Hoke needs to go. Don't fall on your sword, Brady. Just hire an offensive innovator and a better line coach and you can stay!
like any team with a functioning offense.
Fire Borges.
The first thing to make me smile in several hours.
This made laugh out loud and all of a sudden I feel great!
Poor damn Conestoga wagon
I finally started laughing today.
(Fire Borges/Fire Funk)
The Al Borges apologists have no bullets left. None.
So ridiculous. I don't know how Borges survives into next year.
Back to back end arounds? Genius Al, genius. For a net total of zero yards. But don't worry, highly doubt Borges is let go, so 2014 is gonna be all sorts of fun.
FireBorges++++++
The only thing I look forward to next week is Desmond finally calling Borges out on GameDay. Oh wait....
2014: Morris in, Gardner to WR. I'll happily take Bellomy/Cleary/Speight as the backups. Gardner is not a QB.
Amen.
I totally agree here needs to b a change I said it after the Nebraska game put Morris and green in the game. The seasons over build in the future. Most importantly FIRE BORGES!!
Gardner's only opportunity at the next level is at wideout. Morris at QB in '14 with a 4 playmaker wideout lineup of Gardner, Funchess, Darboah, and Harris sounds good to me.
So if Morris gets hurt you go to Bellomy, a walk on, or a true freshman who hasn't proved anything? Did everyone forget about the Nebraska game last year? Gardner has regressed but you can't move him to receiver. Also Morris hasn't taken a meaningful snap all year. Why does everyone think he is going to be a god already?
Gardner is not a quarterback. I'll take my chances with everything else you mention above, thanks.
Gardner is a below average qb at this point, but he has had some good games. Morris has yet to show any indication that he can play.
Gardner is a good athlete and a decent QB but is being horribly mis-used.
Any other halfway decent coach would be happy to have Gardner, and they'd make use of his natural talents. Borges doesn't make use of his talents. For that sin alone Borges should be fired.
He can't be any worse.
It's over .
And for that he should suffer in OC hell ... in his case Borges should be forced to spend eternity doing squat-thrusts while a tray of glazed donuts is just out of reach.
But...wait a minute....3 months ago half of this board had him as a Heisman finalist and a 1st round draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Where are those guys now?
Devin's potential is still there. I place his regression on coaching, and that's not his fault.
Central Michigan was our highlight game of the year offensively and defensively. Ugh.
No it was definitely ND. Damn that games become so meaningless
At least in 2008 we had hope that the offense would get better once Rich Rod got "his players."
This staff's first class are sophomores and redshirt freshmen.
So what I'm sick of this shit everyone plays young players!! And news flash it's game 11 there not freshman and sophomores any more dammit! There has been zero offensive development and that's on the coaching staff
I never used to start drinking before 5:00, but this season has changed my perspective quite a bit. Let it flow...
How in the fuck is it possible to go from scoring almost 50 a game the first half of the season to barely getting 150 yards in a full game.. completely and utterly shocked that this is even possible..
It's like after the MSU game, the coordinators swapped playbooks or brains.. what a joke
1. In the 2nd half of the season, we went up against actual defenses.
2. Opponents also took advantage of game film that ND didn't have, and figured out how to stop us.
3. Indiana sucks. Any offensive stats compiled against them should not count.
I know our O- line is abysmal but I can't watch DG regress anymore. Running backward 10 yards on inevitable sacks, fumbles, bad decisions. Time for some sugar Shane. And no I don't think he will light it up but he can't be any worse than how DG is playing right now.
You'd honestly made his first start against Ohio?
does it really matter who starts this team gonna lose by at least 14 points
I fear...you're being optimistic
I hope it's only 14.
We're going to lose by 40. Meyer's going to run up the score and Borges is going to Borges. Hoke will stand on the sideline in a short sleeved shirt looking confused
Why NOT?!
Is there some thought we could win with DG? Or just limit the humilation?
If it's the latter, then I'll start building towards next year now, pleas!
I'm finally over Gardner. Morris better really suck in order to not be the starter next year. The problem is we can't start him for the first time next week because it would be a mess, but we know Gardner will be ineffective...
Not sure how you think that Al Borges will do a better job coaching Morris than Gardner. Or do you think Borges is a really good coach at heart?
I'm no Borges apologist but some things are not on the coaches. Sometimes a player is just not meant for a position.
By that logic, Michigan fields roughly ten such players on every down.
That's an improvement!
Okay, can't be positive anymore. That was abysmal. Keep in mind also that the D scored the first 7 points and the other two TDs were short yardage. There is no reason Borges should be calling plays any longer starting 7 days from now.
I believe John McKay was once asked about his team's execution when he was down in Tampa. He simply uttered "I'm all for it."
That's probably how most of us feel about this offense right now.
Can it be named the raincloud thread when we lose? Every post is doom and gloom.
I didnt watch the second half but on ESPN gamecast when I was paying attention, I noticed we seemed to abandon the run. Is this the case?
Why did this thought cross Borges' mind?
"Well, Green seems effective, probably time to get Fitz in there. Don't want those numbers to be too gaudy."
I know fitz had a decent run or two but Green was able to get between tackles, not dance for a loss.
The offense stinks.
It's not really the playcalling; occasionally that leaves something to be desired, but quite frequently reasonable playcalls were made that failed.
The problem is that the staff is not good at producing a philosophy and a gameplan that they can teach their players to run consistently and effectively every week.
And the results are obvious.
Its the player development, playcalling, scheme, mistakes by players, etc. but it really comes down to the overall master plan. Its fucking terrible.
Al is being compensated far above the product he has produced in 3 years at the helm. If you perform far below your compensation level you should be fired. He has had 3 years to show improvement and its been a regression since day 1.
it certainly wasn't the only problem. Gardner is just never going to be a highly successful QB. As extremely talented as he is physically, he just can't manage the pressure and make the plays he needs to - despite the dropped passes, lack of blocking, and questionable play calling. He had more time in this game to throw than he's had most of the season. Result? Too many missed throws and the disastrous fumble near the end. I'll cut him some slack though because of the dropped passes. Is it fair to put the lion's share of the blame on Gardner? No, definitely not. But, as the QB of this team, he just needs to make more plays happen.
I think "never" is unfair. People can always improve. Just look at the numerous examples of players that the so-called experts pegged as being players with low ceilings that eventually became good or great players. Nothing is set in stone.
Sorry, just a pet peeve.
I think Gardner suffers from poor QB coaching and a complicated, new-plays-every-week scheme that makes it hard to get proficient at staple stuff. He has shown growth in many areas this year, yet he always has more to learn as the gameplan is torn up and re-invented every week and he is pounded by the rampaging defenses that his OL can't block.
Gardner would be very productive if he had better coaching. Morris would get absolutely killed out there so switching is not a good solution.
The coaching is absolutely horrendous and we are not getting any potential out of the offense. I'll bet Gardner would be up for heisman if he was in a better coached offense.
HAHAHAHA
He has been hit and sacked so many times he can no longer function in the pocket. Unfortunately this may b permanent
I hate Al Borges so much its giving me stomach pain. I'm too young and poor to be a big donor to the AD, but I hope some of those guys are calling Dave Brandon right now.
What the F are this offense doing during the week??? They're 4-5 star recruits and playing like a high school team
Playcalling seemed okay, certainly not great, but at least decent by Borges standards. But blocking still horrible, Gardner is a mess, WRs dropped a number of big passes. It's just a clownshow. So it doesn't really matter to me whether it's the playcalling or not. Either way the offense is a disaster and Borges simply needs to go.
Three options
1) enters next year as presumed started
2) enters next year competing for the job in an open competition
3) we move on and don't offer a fifth year
I would vote for number 2 but his performance lately even when he has had time to throw makes me consider option 3. Option 1 seems crazy to me at this point
I think it has to be a combo of 1 and 2 with Al Borges not being in the picture. A change of scenary would do Devin a lot of good.
They are clearly going to offer him another year. We have no proven quarterbacks on the roster and he is a great athlete. They aren't going to cut someone loose when they have no experienced players at that position on the depth chart
But I would say the same thing for every single returning player on the offense. Not a single one of them played well enough this year to be a presumptive starter next year. That includes Funchess, who dropped a ridiculous number of passes today.
Option 3 is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever seen on the internet.
And I want to give enough time to get offense, experience, etc, but it is hard for me to see how there are ANY bright spots that would give you hope for next year and a willingness to see how that goes...
This offense is absolutely horrible. It makes the defense look bad also. Gardner tries to play superman instead of throwing the ball away. Gardner is soft. Green needs to get 75% of the carries, the other 25% need to go to Smith. Seriously turn the page on Toussaint. Too many 3rd and long plays because of sacks, tackles for loss, (mainly Toussaint and Gardner on zone read plays) incomplete passes. We never have manageable 2nd and 3rd down plays. Go Blue and fire Borges
I defended Fitz but I think it is clear Green does a better job overall as a runner and blocker. Fitz can still receive out of the backfield but he doesn't have the downhill ability that Green has and that is what we need right now and going forward.
At this point. What is the argument against firing Borges? Honestly. I know that players become loyal to coaches, but even they must see that a change needs to happen. If they had started out the season horribly and slowly got better, not to the level of even a good offense, but at least you could see improvement, I could see having an argument for keeping him. When a team seems to be getting worse throughout the season, how can you justify keeping him?
There is none. He has to go. He's overseen multiple historically bad performances this season.
Decent first half but the 2nd half was utter nonsense.
Even the first half was shit the second qtr was everything and that was due to the defensive hustle 4 to and we still lose???!!? How can the offense look at the defense without spittin in their faces??
If Borges is fired who would you guys want to replace him? To my mind there aren't a whole lot of big-name candidates willing to come out to Ann Arbor to coach under the Hoke.
Like I said before Lane kiffin!! Why not I don't care about his personality and his offenses where outstanding at USC. We all remember the 07 rose bowl
As insane as that comment is, I'm willing to try anything now.
Why is it insane?? He is an excellent minded offensive coach no matter what anyone says an he's a great recruiter
This idea is eminently better than our current situation.
It'll never happen, though.
Actually as I'm reading up on him he's pretty good as a OC. His desperation for a job could lead him here at Michigan. He's a good recruiter, and he has a pulse and knows offense.
Sounds great.
He would come here in a heart beat don't see anyone goin after him
And a commitment to allow the new OC Latitude to run their system should be able to attract someone more effective than Borges
Would be better.
Now there's an offensive coordinator with Michigan ties and a proven track record. Plus he's easy to scapegoat if Michigan has a bad season next year.
U can't hire McGee he plays a rich rod offense and that won't work with the personal we are recruiting
The good thing about coming to Michigan as an Offensive Coordinator is that you get to run your own show without interference from the HC. That should make it attractive.
With the new personnel coming in and his ability to do more with less he could be pretty good. He runs manball but at Wisconsin he ran it pretty well
That Shane studies and works out extra special hard this off season, with cherries on top. Pretty please?!
3 and out on 8/13 drives. Never gave the defense a chance.
Are you saying "Boo" or "Boo-orges"?
Well, the 2.77 yards per offensive snap stands out in this one. A good indicator of how well you move the ball is this metric, and this is the third time this year that we've been below 3 yards per snap for this particular measure. The other times, as you might guess, were MSU and Nebraska. I haven't gone back through other seasons, but I cannot think of another time where we've been this inefficient offhand. Ugh, basically.
Agreed i have never been a fan of lewan and I don't understand what the hype is bout I havenst seen anything from him that makes me think he's a top 5 pick
Has Heiko (or any media member) straight up asked Hoke if he's ready to fire Borges point blank? If not, why? I know Hoke will always stay PC and say no, but at least he'll know that this actually is an option. At this point, I really do think the coaches are clueless.
Because it's a stupid question? How would you expect any HC to react if you ask him about firing a member of his staff?
Exactly how I said he'd react in my initial comment. That's not the point.
I'll make it simple for you:
Heiko: Coach Hoke, has any thought been given to switching offensive coordinators in the offseason given the offensive output and development over the course of this season?
Hoke: Absolutely not, Al is our guy. <seed planted in otherwise clueless Hoke>
Heiko would be kicked out of the pressers for such a heated question. Remember, those passes are issued by them so they can also revoke them.
Ok, I agree that being a jerk about it would not be good, but there has to be a way to ask the question tactfully without getting said media pass revoked. That's ridiculous otherwise.
Rob Parker, but do any of you remember when he asked Rod Marinelli if he wished his daughter had married a better defensive coordinator? Onions.
This team just fucking sucks. It's literally embarassing to even tell people I'm a Michigan fan right now because it's just followed by pats on the back and I'm sorrys'
If you're embarrassed to tell people where your allegiances lie, then damn I feel bad for you.
I'm embarassed from the reaction that follows. Quit being a jackass. I'm a proud Michigan fan and will always tell people I'm a Michigan fan. Everyone needs to stop taking stuff so literal on here
That's better
Ok don't be a dumbass it's never been embarrassing to tell people I'm a Michigan fan and Michigan has sunk far lower in recent years
under 300 yards in this moron's 3 years. It's like Al is trying to create the worst offense possible
A joke of a coordinator
Just curious is this the worst offensive output this season?
It probably will be until next week.....
No I think our offense will move the ball but we won't out score them
158 yds, but fourteen points (granted both were short fields). We had positive rushing yards though! #borgesuberalles
Will all the people shitting on Garnder please take a breathe and then realize how awful they are? Dude has played his heart out all year in terrible circumstances. Put him in an offense that makes even a lick of sense and he would ball out. Put anyone in this shit show, and well...you've watched it.
Morris would get killed back there
a lot but he's the one who is supposed to make the offense make sense with his decisions and throws. Having said that I think if he had not lost all confidence with his early season TO problems and the OL implosion he'd be more effective.
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
Until Borges is gone. We can't risk having him permanently damaged. Its too late for Gardner. Wait till next year.
That's a good point
as a QB coach than as a coordinator. I don't think there is a hell of a lot you can play call when the O-Line is laughably awful as ours. I think that despite Brian's UFR scores, Schofield is not very good (or at least he isn't playing very well, sometimes he looks like he's not giving 100% effort). We all know about the mess of the interior.
But as the QB coach, I'm not sure what the excuse is. It's possible the DG is just really bad a being a pass first quarterback, but he's had a mountain of hype. In any case, DG is a REALLY BAD QB. He can't read defenses. He fumbles if he is coughed upon. He throws off of his back foot. He refuses to move within the pocket, he always moves backwards and laterally when pressured. He calls poor audibles (he's the one checking into the some of the runs with 9 in the box that everyone freaks out about). He's not a great runner like Denard because he slows up and hesitates too much. His fundamentals just break down at the drop of a hat.
I think last season and at the start of this season, defenses were afraid to blitz him because he's a running QB. But once it became clear that he was horrible at avoiding pressure (and he is horrible at it. The line is bad but any pressure causes him to run around like a chicken with it's head cut off), teams started blitzing him all the time. The line and Fitz made this easy to do b/c they blow blitz picks, and because they can't establish a running game to make the offense two-dimensional. Once teams saw how effective blitzing was, the offense just tanked.
Poster here say things like "Devin's broken . . . he's mentally defeated" and so on, but I think that's just story-telling to make him into a sort of heroic figure and give the season a familar narrative. Truth is he's not a good QB. That is in part due to coaching. But it is in part on him as well.
Because I feel like Denard's passing regressed under Borges. Obviously there was different year over year personnel and a major system change that clouds he data and any conclusion you can draw from it. But Devin is on a similar trajectory
We need to go back to having a dedicated QB coach. Then Borges and Funk need to go. Then we need a brilliant O Coordinator. Boring Jim Tressel would probably have this team undefeated right now.
He fumbles every time he is coughed upon. So the 19 sacks he took over the three previous games in addition to all his runs, how many times did he fumble?
He throws off his back foot and and refuses to move within the pocket. So you think our offensive line is fine and does a good job pass blocking, Gardner just can't recognize all the time he is given? I must be imagining all the sacks he has taken and the numerous times he is forced to do a play action fake and turn around to an unblocked blitzer. When you have no faith in the guys in front of you your mechanics are going to break down.
He makes poor audible calls. How do you know what audibles he does and does not have available to him? Does Borges give him the freedom to check into a few different plays or just one at the line?
He is not as a good a runner as Denard. Well hell, no one is, Denard was a freak of nature as a runner. I must have also imagined those impressive runs Devin had vs ND. Or their defense must be so much slower and less athletic then Iowa's which is why Gardner was able to run so effectively vs them.
Gardner will never be as good a QB as everyone was hoping for before the season, but he is not terrible and Shane Morris is not a better option. He has been hit more then anyone should and has no confidence in his line.
I agree Borges is a failure of an OC and a coordinator, but Devin seemed to throw the ball pretty well at the end of last year for you to all of sudden decide he cannot be a functioning QB anymore.
Did you read my whole post, or just random fragments? I believe DG is tied for fourth worst in the country at 4 lost fumbles. I'm pretty sure that isn't good. I never said the Oline was fine. I said the opposite, in fact. When he does have time, like he did today, he often throws with bad mechanics. I don't know what audibles he has available to him, but EVEN IF he doesn't have them, don't you think there might be a reason the coaches don't trust him.
DG was an effective runner today against Iowa? What game were you watching? He averaged 1.2 yards per carry with a long of 8 yards. I'm not sure that's effective.
Devin's always had these problems. Last year the line was better and they had the threat of Denard running the ball for the last few games at least. Now the running threat is gone. I don't think teams blitzed him much last season because of his running. Now that they see how bad he is under pressure and they are blitzing very often. I really think he was lucky last season
This,
Everyone wants to give Borges hate ( which he does deserve most times )
But the real reason has always been Gardner ALWAYS. Why do people refuse to believe this? Devin had solid protection today and look how awful he looked. Devin had a SOLID running game last week against NW and he should have thrown 4 INT's. The whole thing just sucks... why did we have to give him that fucking #98 when he had not even proved anything.
There are no snowflakes. There is only pain and emptiness.
Like an ice storm?
Dave Brandon coming into this game still thought we could have a ''Terrific season'' hahahahahahahaha!
http://www.freep.com/article/20131122/SPORTS06/311220091/michigan-footba...
What a fuckn joke he's an idiot for ever making those comments in the first place honestly it starts from the top when ur ad is an idiot why blame the coaches he hires?? what a joke!
I hate to criticize Gardner, I mean he's a great guy, plays with a lot of heart, plays to win, etc. but you can't deny the truth and the truth is he is a bad quarterback. He can't read the defense, has terrible pocket presence, and even his mobility has looked average the second half of the season. I'm willing to go through growing pains with Morris at QB next year, because it'll set us up way better for the future than enduring another year with #98 at QB.
Move him to receiver we need a big guy to catch next season and start Morris he can't play any worse at this point
I'm not so sure. The Devin Gardner of Notre Dame still exists somewhere inside the broken shell we see out there now. I'm not sure how we get that guy back (Better coaching??), but if we can het him back it would seem foolish to replace him
All that Gardner needs is a fresh start. His demeanor out on the field just screams weary and tired to me. Fire Hoke, hire the Duke head coach who is 8-2, and suddenly the whole team will have a new spark to their step. Especially Gardner.
Haven't seen this mentioned, so I may be late to the party...but anyone else think Gardner should give back Ole 98?
-I think he has potential that's outta this world, and he's clearly a Michigan Man...but you need to be at least All-Conference to wear it.
Something I learned from business: never blame the guy who gets picked. Blame the picker.
It wasn't given for performance as far as I know.
Here's a little bit of superstition: maybe he should not be wearing a linebacker's number? He might be playing bad because the football gods see this as a offense to the order they have established. So he should go back to his old number or at least get a legendary QB's number.
Minnesota?
Have we sunk so low that people are asking this qs?
Even worse - I wish we were Duke
Wow. It has come to this. Wishing we were Minnesota. Sad.
I blame Borges, not for his schemes or playcalling but because we seem to have no viable back up QB. If Gardner isn't getting the job done, fine, put the next guy in. BUT THERE IS NO NEXT GUY! Every other team has a competent back up. Where's ours? Borges seems to have a problem with being prepared when we need the #2 guy to come in (see Russell Bellomy). I have no idea why they haven't put Shane Morris in. Maybe he's not ready, not as good at this point as everyone had hoped, etc, etc. But then there should be a guy between him and Gardner. I would imagine Gardner wouldn't at all mind if he could take a break from all this (even if this is against the accepted belief that a starting QB would want to play no matter what). Sometimes stress does funny things to a person and he just needs to get away. But I guess that isn't happening. I mean really - the negatives are piling up exponentially. After the season, someone has to go.
can not possibly be a worse game manager.
How to throw the ball away when 8 defenders are on top of him in the backfield.
twice again today and ran the same formation both times, both times I-form.
You look wonderful.
One more game and this season is over
THIS.
Never thought I'd say this: thank God the season is nearly over.
Wonder what the excuse will be in this week's presser?
A) Youth
B) Toughness
C) Execution
D) All of the Above
We have to do a better job of coaching.
This would be the correct response.
(PS: Fire Borges/Fire Funk)
E) We have to coach better.
I wish Hoke would groom Morris to be the starter. Move Gardner to WR. He's more of a weapon there. He's lost it a QB. It's not happening for him. Give Morris the first team reps all of Spring Ball with a new offensive coordinator. Don't go back to the spread. Keep it pro style and fix the o- line.
I give Hoke one more year to see what happens. If its still a joke after year 4, fire him. He'll end up back at a low or mid major program for the rest of his life.
In defense of Gardner, for the last 3 weeks, he's essentially been a mugging victim. Today was better, but he's clearly rattled. Borges is not putting the offense in a position to succeed, with his playcalling. The players are trying to do what's asked of them, but running the same play consecutively when it's not working is just stupid.
I really don't see how you can bust the guy. He's been hit more times than a prostitute's perenium, and I'll be darned if he's not just a little bit gunshy from it. He has a hard time making good reads because he never feels like he has time to raise his eyes upfield. Yeah, he tries to do too much and thinks he needs to hit a home run every time, but its not as if he can count on long sustained drives when his OC keeps calling stretch run plays to the short side of the field, or I-form up the gut in obvious situations. When he's had time, he's been good, sometimes great. Blitz him enough times without anyone to pick it up and he freaks out. I really don't blame him.
Someone involved in the Michigan offense thinks Gardner is a much better runner than h actually is.
Slightly OT: Arizona leads Oregon 14-0. Arizona has a 1400yd running back. Just sayin'
I am a sad panda
They're 6-4 and after last week's bad loss, the bloom is off the rose in Tuscon.
"the bloom is off the rose in Tuscon."
What? Wishful thinking much?
I've looked at the Arizona papers a few times just for curiosity's sake, and I haven't seen anyone important say that.
Based on records, that WSU loss was probably his worst at Arizona. I wouldn't bet on RR having major long-term success at Arizona, but the good he has done there pretty much outweighs the bad.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Where's that idiot Sten Carlson with his "the future is bright" mantra? What the fuck could you possibly see in this offense that inspires optimism for the future. Hoke is not smart. He is not a tactician. He a fat guy who can say "This is Michigan."
If he cannot see the epic incompetence of Al Borges how the fuck can anyone expect him to coach Michigan back to greatness, to get the most out of all the resources that we have at our disposal.
We should cut our losses now.
Don't forget Creedence "Pangloss" Tapes. I'm sure he's still expecting a win over OSU next week.
I know Gardner didn't play great today, but I feel like he is getting more flak than he deserves. In the last few weeks we've had A LOT of dropped passes. I think Gardner's poise in the pocket is certainly suspect, but he's not getting a lot of his help from his receivers at this point. Funchess and Gallon, who were pretty consistent in the beginning of the year, have both had a few drops in each of the past couple games.
158 yards total offense is completely unacceptable, Mr. Hoke...
- Devin Gardner simply isn't good. Like I said last week, we need to stop making excuses for his poor play. Very similar situation to MSU last year w/ Maxwell. He needs to be on a very short leash & thoroughly examined in training camp next year.
- We simply have a hard time figuring out who our playmakers are and how to get them involved. And that falls on everybody: Borges/Hoke/Gardner.
- Regarding the OL, I'll say this...MSU had a HORRIBLE OLine for a couple years, even with those good RB's. Their biggest problem was that they were young. This year they finally put together, main reason being experience. I think we all got gassed by how praised the recruits were coming out of HS, but w/ that position, it can take time. I'm less worried about them.
- I was also thinking about this...I wonder how accountable these players are held for f*cking up. When Devin does something ill advised, who's in his face to tell him what he's doing wrong? Not saying you gotta go "full Brian Kelly", but some players do respond to that type of pressure.
- Am I also the only person who just feels this team seems generally unenthused (whole team, not just O)? Its something I've noticed all year, not just during the losing stretch. You don't really see players get hyped on the sidelines after big plays...I mean, it just seems outside a couple guys, a lot of these players just lack that "dog" in them.
I am so sick of our linemen standing around after getting beat and watching RB/QB get killed in the backfield.
I agree with you 100 percent on Gardner being held accountable. I've been thinking this all year. At some point in the season he shouldn't be making the same mistakes. I don't see anything wrong with benching.him for a series or two. Of course it's too late in the season now.
158 yards of offense. 158!!!!!!!! That' is absolutely pathetic. the ONLY reason we weren't blown out 24-3 is that Iowa did their damndest to outsuck Michigan. That's how far we've fallen...struggling to gain 200 yards of offense every week. It's beyond bad. Green's no better than Fitz w/ 23 yards on 11 carries - he's slow as mollasses. Gardner w/ 3.5 yards per pass?!?!? That's ABYSMAL. And for as good a receiver as Funchess is, he's a horrid blocker - he simply doesn't even try to do it. That wouldn't be so bad if he was a WR, but he's still playing TE and his inability to block anyone is a huge problem that hasn't gotten enough attention. He had another awful day today.
So here we are, with our only shot to get to 8 wins being drawing a shit opponent in the Texas bowl. Pathetic. This staff is simply in over its head.
Did anyone else notice some of the frustration the players were showing today? Two specific instances I noticed, first after the incomplete screen pass to Funchess, Devin F. shook his head and just looked really frustrated. Later on, when Devin Gardner had a pass tipped he threw his hands up in the air and again seemed really frustrated. It almost looks like the offense has just quit on Al. I can’t say I blame them, but I feel like this is bad and only getting worse. If feels like this team has actually regressed throughout the year.
I had this big long post about Gardner, Borgess, Hoke etc... I decided to delete it and came to the conclusion that we are FUCKED next weekend.
1. Our OC was happy to not have Denard Robinson but calls situational plays that are for his skill set and not Gardner's.
2. Said OC is predictable.
3. Our QB needs to finish runs (dive forward, slide, lower a shoulder, Sprint out of bounds, jump, etc.).
4. The offensive scheme utilizes unnecessary QB footwork/fakes/faints/fluff.
5. Our TE need to work on his hand strength, speed, and transition to WR to be the next Megatron, not a tweener TE.
6. The blocking scheme sucks. We are catching DL on run plays, looking people to block on pass plays, missing when they blitz, zero push, and too many switches.
