The Snowflake Thread: Offense

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Here's your thread to discuss what there was of offense in this game. Remember to keep it brief, sort of like the offense.

But the run game is the strength of this offense. Passing the ball feels all kinds of special this year.

And once again, everything looks so damn hard all the time.

But it's nice to at least see them have moderate running success after...last year. Even if the rest of the offense is nonexistent.

That's fantastic.

But when you have WRs that hardly ever get any separation and drop the balls far too often on the few times they get the ball to their hands,  combined with a QB who cannot get timing, accuracy, or really anything right in any sort of consistent way...well, then pass protection is moot.

Devin Gardner handcuffs the offense.  We had great push with the offensive line at times, and ran the ball fairly well.  Devin didn't face any more pressure than a QB should expect.  But he continues to turn the ball over, stare down receivers, and throw late to our open guys.

Great kid...but he is a huge reason we can't score.

I get that old feeling that I use to get when Denard would raise his arm to throw.  Gardner is a turnover machine.  Today, he wasn't even pressured.  On that deep pick, he had a receiver open on the sideline and threw to the other buy.  Actually, the throw was so bad, I am not sure who he was throwing it to.

Northwestern is clearly a terrible team. Like Indiana and Penn State they simply don't have many good-great players. That Michigan could not dominate them points more to a deep seated coaching/training/game decision issue. The defense played well but on offense, Devin Gardner's problems are glaring:

1. He isn't an effective runner due to his injuries.

2. His passing has problems with his throwing motion. It doesn't have much zip despite his considerable height and reach.

3. He has not developed as a QB in reading defenses and managing the game. In the one really bad pick he had both Dever and Drake Johnson open - Johnson was an easy check off.

Injuries can't be helped, but a big part of points 2 and 3 have to be the responsibility of the OC/QB coach/head coach over the past 4.5 years. I feel bad for him because basically he hasn't developed much as a player. This won't help gather better QB recruits.

He does deserve great credit for taking a beating, going out there, being a good representative of the program. I hope he hears a lot of applause on Senior Day. He deserves it.

Morris doesn't seem like a fantastic option based on 1) what we've seen in his limited opportunities, and 2) the fact that he's not even on the coaches minds.

I think the purpose of my comment was that, as much as I agree we need a fresh start in the coaching staff, I can't sit here after this game and point at the coaches and say "that's why we're not good!"  They've had some clock management hiccups in different games.  The special teams personnel is a coaching error.  But by and large I think our team is what it is because we have no viable option at the most important position on the field.  He is literally a turnover machine.

I don't want to give our team too much credit, but with the Big Ten what it is, our defense a legitimate B+ (lacks a shutdown corner...Hi Jabrill!), and our O-Line improving...I think we could have been a 9-10 win team if we had a "game manager" at QB.

Speight and Malzone have that potential at the very least.  I'm not ready to give up on Shane, but he's looking like a rocket arm without QB instincts.

Saw him play quite a few times in HS. Never thought he was as good as his hype but thought he could develop into an above average QB with good coaching. Should have red shirted last year but some dumb ass coach decided to put in in a meaningless game and burned it.

That PSU-IU was a higher scoring game?  I think you have to go back to 19th century standards before you can really talk about there being an offense

I have no idea who will be coaching next year, but I sure hope if by some miracle it is Hoke after he wins 8 games that we don't switch coordinators again. That's the reason it's taken so long to get to this point. Well, and youth.

Worst offense in the modern era at Michigan.  Devin is hurt, but this  O is pathetic.  Everyone knows he can't run.  If Shane can't do better, this program is fucked next year also.

We've seen RS Freshmen win the damn heisman.  Speight can be a saving grace, and even Malzone has the "moxie" that might make him a viable option as an early enrollee freshman. After all, they'll all start on even footing with (another) (likely) new coordinator.  But I do agree -- if Morris doesn't have "it," that's a shame.  I do remember Dilfer being unimpressed with his overall makeup at Elite 11 camps.  He's a rifle arm, but being a QB is much more than physical talent.

Why does Gardner get to stay in the game when he makes mistake after mistake?  His last interception was ridiculous.  We could have won this game by 4 Td's.  Gardner is killing us.  I like the kid, and I'm sure some of you will say he is best option but I would prefer to see the other options.

Not sure if sarcastic. The offensive line has done a great job at pass protection the last four games. Another one today. The last two games have been much better at run blocking (granted against teams we really should be running against.).

Well, let me start with the fun fact - we actually did not outgain Northwestern. I know, you're shocked. That being said, it was close to even - we gained 256 yards to their 264 yards.

With those 256 yards, it split 106 passing to 147 rushing. Through the air, we were 11-24, which is good for 9.64 yards per completion or 4.42 yards per attempt.

On the ground, it was 147 yards on 34 attempts, or 4.32 yards per rush. Still better than last year.

were as much on the receiver.  Not to say that DG isn't in on the blame, but.  On the first, Butt didn't get there (and to be fair, the DB made a nice play).  On the 2nd, the receiver ran away from the ball?!?  Now on that one, the other receiver was uncovered, but the one he chose was open, too.

OTOH, I don't know what has happened to the guy who threw for over 500 and over 400 in games last year.  He sure isn't the guy back there for UM this year.

Man... painful.

First, Kudos to the OLine. It has steadily progressed from horribly aweful to only-kind-of-bad. Not giving up bad sacks, picking up blitzes, hundred yard rusher when the other team know that we couldn't pass.

But what is going on with our Devins? Gardner can't complete a simple pass outside of the Big House. Funchess has been plagued by the drops in a horrible way for a couple games. We have guys running wide open and Gardner not seeing them or being able to hit them. I have been intrigued with what Nuss is building, but it keeps getting held up by "almosts."
