The Snowflake Thread: Offense

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

I realize that these are not universally liked, but believe me, they prevent a lot of nightmares on the modding end.

This is your thread for offensive snowflakes...well, snowflakes about the offense and the offensive playcalling which aren't too, well, offensive.

Especially at QB - too inconsistent.  I like Nuss.  Haven't blamed him for the low output.  I think he's doing the best he can with what he's got.  But with regard to the play-calling tonight:

Am I the only one who would like to see some designed roll-outs, especially when your QB is taking 5 sacks a half in the pocket?  These can turn into some decent runs by Devin also.

I don't think I saw a single designed QB run all night.  I understand you don't want to expose Devin to too many of those, but how about something up the sleeve for a key play?

Please set me straight if I'm off base here.

I don't think the talent, coaching or development is there... our 4 and 5 star recruits don't play like their ratings. Is it talent, poor assessment of skills, coaching? I don't know, but I do know we suck.

Did you see the first interception? Butt was running WIIIIIIIDDDDDEEEE open down the middle and Darboah was open in the flat.......Devin decides to throw into coverage because Norfleet was directly in front of him. Can't see anything outside of 5 yards directly downfield.

Well, it doesn't take a lot to breakdown 186 total yards of offense, but we'll do it....

Passing yards: 125 total yards - 15-31, or 8.33 yards per completion and 4.03 yards per attempt.

Rushing yards: 61 yards on 26 carries, 0r 2.35 yards per rush. Progress?

They seem to be getting a better grasp of the system each game.  They just can't sustain a drive, and it's less about good D than it is some kind of implosion - a turnover, or on 3rd down, a bad pass, or (especially tonight) a drop.

So many quick slants were blanket covered today - excellent D, or poor design/execution?

BUT, he is not a very good QB.  He has poor field vision and ability to see open receivers.  He shows poor judgement.  He caves in when there's the least amount of pressure.  At this point, the decision is whether we keep Devin in in the slim hope we can become bowl eligible and be able to get the extra practices, or we start developing the future QB and put Morris in as the starter.  Either way, I'm not looking forward to the rest of the season.  The offensive coaching is very poor and will not improve.  Very depressing.

The oline wasn't bad today, didn't dominate but Gardner should be done, he's not a qb. Let Shane finish the year, there is no point to roll Gardner out there anymore, put Shane in and give him experience. Course he won't because, "Gardner gives us the best chance" yeah whatever. I thought state looked average today, and that's no disrespect. If we had a qb, we would have been right in it.

The pockets weren't great, but the OL was not why we lost, our skill players Devin an Devin really hurt them.  The nutbreaker was Devin's fumble.  How would you like to bang your head against the wall all day as an OL with Devin at QB?  Not saying OL was a powerhouse, but with a decent QB we could have competed today.

A line that doesn't run block or pass protect, receivers who can't catch or gain separation and running backs who miss the hole...other than that we're right where we want to be.

Must be the scheme

I'm sure this point has been made before but does it not seem like if you have a. Top-rated dual-threat qb you should call plays that take advantage of both threats?

I mean I get the Devin bashing but it seems like half or more of his skills are not being deployed.

I don't question Devin's toughness, though I find it strange that unless he's limping, he's as useless as tits on a boar hog most of the time. What happened to the 2012 Devin?

In the words of my dad over Facetime right after a game, a diehard since his freshman year in 1970, "maybe if they had played Atomic Dog for Norfleet, maybe this would have been totally different." /s

Kids are soft, playcalling is iffy, we've got a quarterback throwing Stanley Jackson INTs to no one... There's not much to save here. See you in 2015.

The ball had clearly crossed the goalline when his toe dragged across the out of bounds line. The goal line extends infinitely out in both directions. The ball should be spotted where the ball is when the foot steps out of bounds (the foot was out at the 1/2 yard line, not the 1, but whatever) and that was in the endzone.

How many times was our offense in Spartan territory in the first half and came away with no points.

This offense continually pisses all over good field possition.

Based on what Nuss did at Bama, I tend to believe he's not the problem.  Like Bama, we've got a roster of man-ball players.  Not as deep, and lower ranked coming in, though not by much - especially on the line.  So I'm thinking we should at least see a poor-man's Bama offense of recent years, which would have us in a much better place right now.  So what's up?  My factors:

1) It's still the first year of this system.  Can't totally ignore that.  But really shouldn't be an issue by mid-season.

2) The glaring difference on those rosters is at QB.  McCarron was a great game-mgr type, which this offense is screaming for - ball protecting distributor 1st, athlete 2nd.  Devin/Shane not yet up to that task - you can argue about protection, but hard to put it all on the OL, which brings up...

3) Lack of development seems the biggest issue.  Especially the OL.  From a QB standpoint, I don't know what's reasonable to expect Nuss to have done by this time in his first year.

4) Lack of intensity.  I want to think everybody's giving their all, but this team just seems so flat.  The Devins were good examples of that today - heads not in the game.  Or is this what a poorly developed team looks like.

I am not saying that I want our O to be a clone of Nuss' Bama O - I was thinking it would be similar (run oriented) but probably less conservative.  But that was at the start of the season when I thought we'd kick ass.  So is this a fair assessment of Nuss?  If you think he's the problem, please elaborate.

The biggest difference is at running back.  In his first year at Bama he had last year's NFL rookie of the year Eddie Lacy AND TJ Yeldon (who rushed for over 1,000 yards and did it again the next year).  Calling vanilla zone runs works a lot differently with a much better offensive line and those kinds of guys carrying the ball.

This team just isn't very good on the offensive side of the ball.  Nussmeier has nothing much to do with why that is the case.

So what about all these high 4* and 5* guys.  Why do we have no talent?  It's not like the coaches hypnotize the players into forgetting how to play.

It's like they sign with Michigan and simply stop trying to get better.  It seems to have started with the 5* RB out of GR, several years ago.  He came here and never amounted to anything. Gardner, Funchess, any Olinemen you can name.  How can one group of coaches be so completely incompetant that they totally suck all the talent out of these guys?

How the fuck did this useless staff ever get hired?  Nuss have to be good right?  He worked with Saban.  He seemed to run some great plays today, but no one on this team can catch, throw or block.  It just amazes me.  They looked like a high school team compared to MSU.

Just a bad offense.  And as far as talent., we played a more talented team today and that was obvious.  I'd love to have MSU's talent on or team not to mention their coaching.  You do not get whipped on the lines man on man like we did most of the game by less talented players.

With an offense this bad it cannot simply be coaching OR talent- it has to be both- Nuss seems less imaginative than Borges (but maybe better run blocking)

I am not mad because it was expected. There was plenty of laughter and head shaking from Gardner's moments of shame. It takes an epic level of incompetence and suckage to pull of those turnovers. When he did look some what like a QB his WRs had a chronic case of the yips. The OL is what it is. I thought they were decent in pass protection and meh in run blocking. The RBs are pretty dependent on the OL, so...I do think they should give Drake Johnson sone carries. At this point, the best thing Hoke can do is give every player some in game experience.

Michigan has better athletes than most of their opponents, but they don't have better football players. The lack of football players falls on star obsessed recuiting and a lack of developing these athletes into football players. I hate star rankings because they measure athletic ability, not the ability to play football. They ignore the qualitative factors of the game (like the ability to anticipate the play i.e. be in the right spot and heart) which I think is what makes a football player.

Is it me or do our WRs drop a lot more passes than other teams'?  Yes, sometimes Gardner hangs them out to dry a bit but there were definitely some plays to be made today that they failed on.
