The defense deserved better today. They played well, forced turnovers, and made stops. Can't blame them for being gassed at the end of the game.

Mattison earns my stamp of approval. Not that he ever needed it.

The Defense is not the issue.  These guys play as well as they can for having a limp, flaccid offense to have to support.  Defense will rock next year but the O will only be good once Funk and Borges are replaced.

defense. Just not able to physically control the LOS well enough to be a dominant D. We gave up 398 yards and the 4th Q exposed a tired unit. Hope a year of S&C will make us strong enough to hold the line next year.

can you imagine how good they'd be if they could get a breath?

Our offense sucks, and this game it isn't all on Borges.  Our receivers dropped some key balls that even if they didn't lead to scores, would have rested the defense.

Soft. Not physical enough. Hamstrung by an incredibly passive coordinator. Sickening. Been this way all season and it has cost them 3 games.

You get the fuck out. I'm tired of the D and Mattison getting a pass. The O is woeful, yes, but the D is soft and passive and it doesn't help matters. They break when it matters and it has cost them 3 games agaisnt inferior teams and it's nothing short of absolutely fucking pathetic.

Jesus man relax.

They got 4 turnovers. They scored a touchdown. All of those 3 and outs from the offense left them on the field constantly. I'm not a huge fan of time of possession, but they lost it by 5 minutes.

Plus 2 starting ILB's out.

I'm chill, but when I get told to 'GTFO' and am called retarded, you can see why I'd take issue with that. But as a D and as a coordinator, when you know that a stretch is coming yet you don't at all attack it aggressively, it's fucking grating. It was GERG-ish, circa 2010 Wisconsin.

Ya man you got your head buried way deep in the ground if your that harsh on the D. Put yourself in the shoes of the D, how would you feel if you worked your ass off and gave the offense all those golden opportunities and got nothing back from it? You'd prolly be pretty pissed/disheartened. But of course I could be totally wrong, you yourself could be one of the welches who disheartens others.

Are you kidding me???? How the hell do you think we've even stayed in any of the past few games. The past 3 weeks they've been given poor field position, and watched countelss 3 and outs. Through all that they stood strong and kept the team in the game. They were never expected to be an amazing D and they've completely carried the team. They had no pass rush at the begining of the year, and I've seen improvement there. Honostly, I could go all day, but if you can't see it then you just dont know anything about football.

If you get lucky and have a 14 point lead you need to play harder knowing how awful our offense has been doing. These defenses are nothing compared to the 80s and 90s. I'm not sure if we will ever get a great defense here. Depressed since we are turning more into a losing team. We had our stretch of losing during RR era! It was suppose to be over and now it has returned. Awful football! I haven't felt this depressed since '09 and '10. Things were suppose to improve but they are not, the same shit!

None of thsoe 80s and 90s defense played with anything resembling this offense.  And all of this revisionist history BS about teams drives me crazy; looking back 20+ years is almost looking at a different species of football than the one played now.  Those defenses would have been shreded virtually any spread attack, and as a by-product of moving toward defending those types of offenses the defenses have had to become smaller and "softer" in some cases.

The defense had a 14 point lead with a half left to play.  Iowa was able to move down the field when it mattered most.

At the end of the day this loss is on the offense, but the defense has collapsed when they are needed the most.  If you said we were going to give up 17 points in a half of fooball against Iowa, everyone on this board knew this was a loss!

Defensive Breakdowns this Year:

PSU with 10pt 4th Qtr Lead.

MSU - Scoring drives before and after the half to effectively end the game.

Nebraska - Game winning drive at the end of the game.  Another 4th qtr lead lost.

Iowa - Up 14 in the 2nd half and up 7 in the 4th.  Gave up 10 points to collapse in the 4th Qtr.

I am sorry, but the defense does get blame.  The only reason this is not more glaring is because the offense is so damn bad!

As usual, they were not the main culprit in the loss, but they forfeited my sympathy by once again falling apart when it counted.

Given how much we substitute defensively, we shouldn't be that gassed.  It's a cheap excuse. Not to mention that playing in cold weather is less exhausting than those September games when everyone's sweating buckets.

They weren't out of gas at the start of the 2nd half.  That drive for Iowa really was even bigger for them than it seemed.  Plus, it's not like DG was chucking interceptions left and right.  The D simply needed to play better. Yes, in spite of the 4 turnovers.  Iowa's offensive game plan looked pretty good even when they were down at the half.

After PSU, MSU, Nebraska and now Iowa, that rings hollow to me.  Not to mention Akron and ND, who drove down the field on us in the 4th quarter, too.

The D is not the primary culprit in our poor play, but time and again this season it's struggled to get off the field in the 4th quarter.  It's basically 2005 all over again on that side of the ball, but it's been masked by the even worse offense.

I'm not talking about those games. I'm talking about today. Really. They did everything you want a defense to do. Put points on the board. Got turnovers. Got key stops and handed the offense good field position. They got stops at every important juncture until it was time to hope for a 2-minute drill.

As far as I'm concerned, they did what they needed to do to win. The offense kept putting them on the field, and they kept delivering. At some point, that has to translate into a win.

4 turnovers. 1 pick-six. 14 points of support. 14 fucking points.

Place the blame where blame is due. And it's on the offense.

I don't blame them for this loss.  They were on the field almost the entire 2nd half because of the inept offense.  Obviously near the end they got demoralized and gassed.  Even then, we had a chance to tie or win the game outright in regulation and predictably the offense gave it away.  Losses like this make me really mad.

You can't expect anything more from this defense today. Scored a TD. Repeatedly gave the offense field position and turnovers. The offense did absolutely nothing with it. Once again, this is about the offense, not the defense.

I disagree.  They wilted down the stretch again.  They had a 7 point 4th Qtr lead and gave up 10.  Failed to make the stop on a critical 3rd down.  I would say they could have done better!

Loss still falls at the feet of Gardiner and Offense, but this continues to be the same type of collapse in the D.  One minute they look dominating, then they look like they can't stop anyone!

Ryan and Clark played their asses off. Wormley and Black played well too. Not a bad performance from the D. About as much as they could do given their skill set

They defense played great considering they know they are getting ZERO support from the offense. It must be demoralizing to have to keep going out there knowing that no matter what you do, you'll still most likely lose. I feel bad for the defense

Our defense gave up 24 points. Their defense gave up 14 (7 was by the offense). What kind of support did the Iowa defense get from their offense? A lot less than ours since Iowa's defense had to respond to 4 interceptions.

Bottom line...Iowa's defense played much better than ours.
