Played pretty well. No Venric Mark but I'll take it.

Greg Mattison is a hell of a cordinator. The jury's still out on Borges.

The jury is still out - only in that they they haven't returned from Ann Arbor Torch & Pitchfork. But they're coming for you Al. They're coming.

Thank you D.

Hard to complain about three field goals in regulation. If someone had told you after the ND game that we'd hold Northwestern to 9 points, you'd assume we were going to win by 30+ easy. This was a sad, ugly game. But unless you came in expecting perfection, it is pretty difficult to put much of the blame on D.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:44 PM ^
Key phrase being "after the ND game".
After the Nebraska game, if you had told me we would hold NW to 9 points I would assume we would win by 1.

Looks like the second fewest points Northwestern has put up this year. Fewest was 6 points to Wisconsin.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:41 PM ^
We really did a good job on defense in this game on a yards per play basis - 3.90 yards per snap is one of our best performances all year. Most notably, we held Northwestern to under three yards per rush. That is a good performance, folks. Kudos to the defense and Greg Mattison.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:41 PM ^
Also I think Henry played great.

Couldn't we say the same about the offense? Our leading rusher was a true freshman. A true freshman caught the first TD. We rushed for 137 yards after negative numbers the last two weeks. I didn't like some individual calls but overall saw some progress.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:09 PM ^
1) two new tackles
2) lack of progressing this year
Maybe we progressed today. It seemed that way.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:36 PM ^
I buy into the whole experienced offensive line matters argument.
Also, I think Shane Morris is the real deal.
Green will be a good one, Jake Butt is solid, Devin Funchess solid...there's some hope here at MLive er...MGoBlog
November 17th, 2013 at 12:56 AM ^
Funchess just solid? He will probably finish his Michigan career as the leader in yards for a tight end. I'd say that's a bit better than "solid." He'll probably be all Big Ten next year, if not this year.
November 17th, 2013 at 4:57 AM ^
Srsly - he's not a tight end... but he is a great athlete and will be a major weapon for us.
November 17th, 2013 at 12:53 AM ^
didint we think the offense progresed afte the first 2 games of the season, or after the indiana game? then what happened after those 2 things?
November 16th, 2013 at 9:46 PM ^
The offense only improved relative to the Nebraska game. The running game and pass protection looked like a bad B1G team as opposed to a bad division II team. Gardner also threw some frighteningly bad passes.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:38 PM ^
true but the d-line needs to play BIG next season, Taco needs to step up next season.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:46 PM ^
I watched henry..he played proper technique and played well..defense is gettting better..next 2 years they should jump up on all stats all around

B+ defense plays A- game. Good job team! Also, I'm pretty sure Henry is part of that scramble FG drill team. So even more kudos to him.

Gordon's INT least important INT ever?

and solid is the floor with Mattison in charge. With a few playmakers like those coming in and developing in the program (sigh, too bad no Hand), they will be elite. If they had an offense that could possess the ball they could be bad ass.

yeah, but it's more interesting.
If we had the same number of comments, they would all generally be repeats - even more than in the Fire Borges threads.
Also, for some of us, it is a healthy release to say what is driving us crazy. I have felt the need for psychological release.

These threads are like a suggestion box. You'd expect more suggestions in the box when something isn't working than when it's working.

You really want to read "good job defense; Mattison is the man!" 275 times? What more is there to say about this defense? Much more to talk about with the offense and coaching right now.

9 points in regulation. The only thing I could think of to remotely complain about would be Northwestern's touchdown in OT or a couple of near-interceptions, but I think that's being nitpicky. They played very well.

Of course it's always easier to give criticism than praise, but the defense deserves our praise today. Mattison had his boys ready, and I have no doubt that he'll have them as ready as they can be to take the field against OSU in two weeks.
