This will be your snowflake thread for your thoughts on defense and the defensive playcalling.

Hard to complain about three field goals in regulation.  If someone had told you after the ND game that we'd hold Northwestern to 9 points, you'd assume we were going to win by 30+ easy.  This was a sad, ugly game.  But unless you came in expecting perfection, it is pretty difficult to put much of the blame on D.

We really did a good job on defense in this game on a yards per play basis - 3.90 yards per snap is one of our best performances all year. Most notably, we held Northwestern to under three yards per rush. That is a good performance, folks. Kudos to the defense and Greg Mattison.

I expect the D next year to go from good to very good/great. Black, Washington, Gordons are gone but everyone else is back plus maybe a contribution from Peppers. 2015 will be the year for the D though.

Also I think Henry played great.

Couldn't we say the same about the offense?  Our leading rusher was a true freshman.  A true freshman caught the first TD.  We rushed for 137 yards after negative numbers the last two weeks.  I didn't like some individual calls but overall saw some progress.

They seemed to be in good position most of the game. Did well versus the run. Decent pass rush. OK coverage. Excellent coaching by Mattison.

and solid is the floor with Mattison in charge.  With a few playmakers like those coming in and developing in the program (sigh, too bad no Hand), they will be elite.  If they had an offense that could possess the ball they could be bad ass.

Kinda bummed to see this thread has less comments than the offense and coaching threads. People would rather discuss the negative things that happened today than the positive things. The defense has put us in a position to win for the last two weeks and deserves a ton of credit, especially with all the youth we're running out there. They got the ball back with enough time for the offense to put together the game tying drive and delivered the knockout punch in OT. Game ball goes to the D.

9 points in regulation. The only thing I could think of to remotely complain about would be Northwestern's touchdown in OT or a couple of near-interceptions, but I think that's being nitpicky. They played very well.

Mattison had tears in his eyes coming off. He was spent emotionally. It was great to celebrate with the players coming off. Each one stopped and slapped my sons hand.

Huge win!

Defense, by all accounts, played outstanding today against a dangerous Northwestern offense on their own home turf. Yes, they're without Venric Mark, and yes, they're 0-6 in conference play, but they are nowhere near as bad as their record. This is a team that pushed OSU to the absolute brink, and OSU only won because Hyde was there to bail them out.

Of course it's always easier to give criticism than praise, but the defense deserves our praise today. Mattison had his boys ready, and I have no doubt that he'll have them as ready as they can be to take the field against OSU in two weeks.
