Snowflake Thread: Coaching

Submitted by Black Socks on

Up 7 to uber conservative offense - to delay of game - to punt - to horrendous pooch - to allowing three consecutive bombs.  I am a sunshine blower but that is the worst game management I've ever seen.

i must say...im as pissed off as anyone that isn't playing for or getting payed by the University of Michigan, but what I have read here tonight is RCMB level bullshit....yeah, the end sucked...but we did totally crap the bed in the1st half and still came storming back, Devin played very good in the second half too. There was obviously some questionable calls by the coaches, and Borges needs a good shalacking by the media, but this is Michigan, and we do not resort to garbage namecalling here. This is bullshit what i have read here. Calling for Hoke's head because he did once, wat Lloyd Carr did countless times. I'm sure Hoke will take away from it and learn and I'm sure he knows he fucked up a few times situationally.....plus, this team just aint all that good.

oh yeah....3 missed field goals as well...one of those hits, the bitching is cut down by 90%.

Look at the rest of the schedule. So far, these are the easiest games of the year. I'll take a 7-5 record and the Gator Bowl at this point.

I think Borges' playcalling in OT is mostly forgivable, as painful as it was to watch Fitz run into a wall time and time again.  Generally, you expect your kicker (who, for Michigan, has been one of the most consistent players) to make a 33 yarder (and for Gibbons a 40 yarder as well).  Nobody had the foresight to see Gibbons missing 4 FGs tonight.

The run was left five yards to the middle of the field. A QB sneak would have left the ball position to the right side and a greater chance that our kicker would push the kick wide left. Oh well.

Any way heading 30 miles out for grouper tomorrow. Life seems to go on.

...the ol' Lloyd FG-formation-snap-to-kicker-pooch might have been a decent move there.  Still, last thing you want from that pooch is to kick it into the end zone.  Hell, take another delay and pooch it.

That said, before I ventured in here, I was wondering if should read the thread or just wait for the high(low?)lights on TWIS.  Easy choice for Tears of Unfathomable Sadness.  (Course, I haven't been on the Oklahoma boards today.)

Does we has em? When it is 1st and 10, and your play call is a slow off tackle run, and they have 8.5 in the box, and it is the 2nd quarter, do we really not have an option to do anything else? A fade to Funchess seems like might be a better play

Why don't we have built in sight adjustments? Like when we were in multiple receiver sets the bubble and Rambo screen were there most of the day. Al is behind the times... Even high schools are doing sight adjustments.

John Beilein saw what was going on and overhauled his assistants. He had the guts to do it and it has worked well.

Hoke needs to follow suit and as most of you have noted, Borges and Funk are definite targets.

UM's standard (B1G championship) that it certainly raises concerns about Hoke's trajectory. O'Brien just beat us with a true frosh QB and less than 75 scholarship players in his 2nd year. Can Hoke right the ship?

There will be no excuses for Hoke not to win 9 or 10 games in 2016. If he is still struggling with 7-5 and 8-4 records then I will agree it might be time evaluate if Hoke and staff are right for this program.

Hopefully Hoke can prevent an implosion occurring this season and finish 7-5. I'd hate to finish with another sub .500 season.

That lack of recruiting won 11 games his first year.  It wasnt a lack of recruiting then.  He took all the credit for those wins and he looked like the man.  His teams have gotten worse every year.  At least RR teams had a positive slope.  I would prefer to go from 3-5-7 wins then from 11-8-6?  Hoke needs to take responsibitity for these loses.

many. It's not that he should win it all right now, but a program can't regress in the 2nd and 3rd years without hard questions. Coaching is weak. Most concerning is the lack of player development. Our secondary and OL are very weak and our 4th yr QB makes constant turnovers. PSU is mediocre with a thin roster, but we didn't look like a superior team in talent and certainly not in execution. Schemes and playcalling are predictable and non-strategic.

The staff didn't look at how Indiana shredded Penn State through the air. Borges was incessant on running on 1st and 2nd downs which placed us in 3rd and medium/long. Michigan had a nice stretch where the passing game was clicking and then it was abandoned. I would rather have seen DG go 4 or 5 wide and have them spread/stretch the field. Then he could tuck and run if nothing was available since he was doing that half the time anyways.

How is allowing three consecutive bombs on the coaches? Two of them were misjudged and probably could have been intercepted. The ability of the team to perform as well as they did in one of the toughest stadiums in the country is also on the coaches. Clock management was weird and out of character. Ill give you that.

Hoke is definitely at fault but not as much as Borges, Funk, and Mattison... Hoke had these guys riled up and ready to play for the entire second half, and attitude and emotion was never an issue. On the other hand, game management was pathetic. I have too much to snowflake about for this post to go on about. Really wanted this game for a little momentum boost.

And he brought all these dudes with him from SDSU.  Thing is, the offense still put up 34 points in regulation, so I think Borges is a good designer of plays.  Maybe he shouldn't be calling them though.

But the OL development is very concerning.  With Lewan, you should be able to pick up an easy 100 yards running to the left side alone.

I'd be happy with canning Funk and bringing in someone just to call the plays.

TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS!

All the conservative, go nowhere play calling is meaningless if we don't gift PSU 14 points.  As I said elsewhere, not only did they score 14 of TO's, but there was bound to be points scored on those drives that ended in TO's.  You cannot gift teams 20+ points and win.  Simple.

So we lost a game that had hints of Braylonfest, and shades of UTL 1, plus maybe a little of Alabama's missed XP in the Orange Bowl. Stinks, but we have been on the other side too.

Instead of staying home and game planning during the bye week, Borges should have been out recruiting like the other coaches. That way the next offensive coordinator and o-line coach would have better talent to work with.

At least he would have less time to dream up a game plan like that. After the second or third series my wife asked what was going on. I said the coaches had a bad game plan and they wouldn't be able to adjust until halftime. I just hoped it stayed close enough for that to happen. After the next series my wife says "they need to get this shit fixed now, they can't afford to wait." My wife hates football, BTW.
