Catch-22 for Borges. He has to explain why he didn’t do this all year.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
...exact same question.
Michigan looked like a completely different team compared to what we saw against MSU, NW, NEB, and Iowa.
Is that because we spent a large portion of those weeks specifically preparing for OSU?
November 30th, 2013 at 3:53 PM ^
I feel like because The Game is such a huge game that Borges held stuff back and didn't want to tip his hand so to say for most of the season. Obviously there's a major problem with that and I don't understand why he would do that but I have that feeling
November 30th, 2013 at 4:24 PM ^
I disagree with this. We didn't see anything new this game from any of the other games. This wasn't some crazy game where all of the sudden we started running the wishbone. All of these plays were on film at one point or another this season.
November 30th, 2013 at 6:26 PM ^
it was just the execution?
November 30th, 2013 at 3:45 PM ^
1) We didn't win despite the offense playing well
2) The offense played well this game why not the previous four? You telling me we just started "executing" vs. OSU
3) Still too many wasted downs where we ran into the teeth of the defense.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:52 PM ^
I'm fine with still wanting a new OC, but this is stupid. Just give him credit for today. Plus, for all of the "Where was this before?" stuff, while I'm obviously disappointed with this year's offense, it's nice to see something saved for OSU. Borges has called two brilliant games against OSU and one terrible one (when he showed his whole hand in a blowout win against Iowa). At least it looked like the offense realized we were playing a rival and need to get up for this.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:00 PM ^
I am going to forgive you for being ignorant of Michigan football. Now I will school you. Yes, wasted downs! When you run plays that are clearly read by the defense and have no chance of succeeding then you put your offense in a bind.
You can do the math if you want but I cannot EVER recall an offense that had numerous third and longs. The offense has been at a disadvantage all season.
In the red zone, we still ran the I-Form into a stacked box.
We spiked the ball when a play could have been ready. This didn't cost Michigan on the scoring drive but it gave away a down.
Look at Ohio State's offense, they continously ran plays that worked. We continously run plays that get stuffed. Thankfully their defense gave us an open field all day!

Shouldn't use the word Turd. It's a kids word.
Maybe you have several children. However, you made great arguments and won the comment battle btwn yourself and Ferguson. Next time call him Ferguson and leave the word out of it.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:36 PM ^
Turd won the argument. Few of the fire Borges! brigade can handle a response with logic. Unless it ends with Fire Borges! they just can't handle a turd or anything else.

What?
November 30th, 2013 at 4:34 PM ^
November 30th, 2013 at 4:22 PM ^
If you don't think the Oline executed better today than it has all season then you must be commenting without even watching the games. Borges probably WILL say the team executed better than they have all year, and he definitely won't be wrong.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:29 PM ^
Do NOT Blame This Game on the Offense.
603 yds, six TDs (and a foregone bunny FG).
Not.The.Fault.Of.The.Offense.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:48 PM ^
exactly.
I still want him gone. I think he doesn't deserve to stay. I have no faith in him. I have no faith in his play calling or player development.
However, after this game, if he is not fired (I don't think he will be, probably), this game gives me a little hope that I might be wrong about him and that he might end up being great.
My biggest problem with Borges, with this game as an example, is that he is often TERRIBLE or GREAT. No consistency. I just don't get it. I think it has a lot to do with his inability to alter game plans on the fly.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:15 PM ^
you have such talent on offense, which we knew all along, it just was only inspired enough to play well today?? And at home? But I will say this team should walk away with tremendous amount of confidence going into next year. . .
November 30th, 2013 at 3:51 PM ^
Great game.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:51 PM ^
"Catch-22 for Borges. He has to explain why he didn’t do this all year."
He'll come up with some double-speak to justify. But it's all BS.
He called this game as if he had nothing to lose. It showed the potential this team's offense has had most of the season. They play this kind of game and they beat Nebraska and Iowa.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:02 PM ^
Penn State in overtime was the worst play calling I have seen in my life!
All three of those games amount to a 10 win season and a better Big 10 record. All of those losses are on him.
This game changes nothing. All it did was keep Michigan from embarrassment. We still lost.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:54 PM ^
November 30th, 2013 at 4:07 PM ^
Great analogy. Although ecstatic after beating Florida in that bowl game, the thought of "what could have been" had Michigan just shredded teams all year with that passing spread was somewhat depressing. Same kinda thing today.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:51 PM ^
5 this year, possibly 6?
How does the board feel about those facts?
November 30th, 2013 at 6:34 PM ^
like it will not ruin my life. The team played their hearts out; none of us were on the field. There will continue to be losses, maybe many more in the future. You might want to get some perspective.

Neither do I.

First bad game by the Michigan defense all season. Well you can count the Indiana game as well. While the defensive performance obviously hurt, I don't think you see Mattison on the hot seat for a while. The defense has to turn in numerous poor performance that can be tied to Mattison.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:52 PM ^
except Indiana...and large portions of Penn St.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:00 PM ^
And the ends of the Iowa, Nebraska, and Akron games.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:17 PM ^
The Big 10 is very weak- the offenses Mattison stopped were not that great and the defenses OSU rolled over were not that great also (IOW, OSU is not such an offensive powerhouse as many believe) UM's defense is a lot closer to the offense than most think. Borges isn't the greatest OC, maybe not even good- but Mattison is not doing that much better and today it showed. I could care less if Borges is fired or not (he will get a nice package) but the blind eye to Mattison's faults this season has been extreme. Mattison has not done that well this year and this teams defense is not that impressive. Time to be a little more fair.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:48 PM ^
Anyone who says Mattison should be fired is not using logic.
You have not seen the horrible field position and the points surrendered by the OFFENSE this season.
I am going to break down a couple of the losses for you.
Versus Penn State - Turnovers produced 4 turnovers, 390 yard of offense, 85 yard rushing. This is despite four overtimes. One turnover in overtime and one field goal missed practically GIFT WRAPPED this game to the offense. They proceeded to lose it for us.
Versus Michigan State - Our defense kept us in this game for three quarters despite getting NO help from the offense. We produced a turnover. Their offense has 394 yards of offense. Pretty stellar considering our best offensive drive after the defense produced its only turnover was -21 yards! This is NOT a typo.
Versus Nebraska - Our defense held Nebraska to 17 points. We forced them into two turnovers. Their offense managed only 273 yards. They punted the ball more than us.
Versus Iowa - The defense forced four turnovers. We converted one of those into a touchdown. Iowa had 400 yards of total offense despite having the ball the entire second half. Our offense punted five times and fumbled.
Versus Ohio - The defense produced two turnovers. We had no answer for the Hyde/Miller connection.
Recap: In every one of our losses our defense WON the turnover battle for us. With the exception of the Ohio State game, they held on for nearly the entire game despite playing for the second half. Indiana is the only win where the offense outplayed the defense. Ohio State is the only loss where the offense outplayed our defense.
The offense has hung our defense out to drive for far too many games this year only to have the defense hold up to the bitter end. There is NO WAY you can blame the defense for a five loss season.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:08 PM ^
Obviously our defensive game plan was garbage for that game.
The Penn State game was called well enough to win.
The only beef you and the poster above seems to have is the final drives of game where our defenses had take the field for practically the entire SECOND HALF. Even the best trained athletes will struggle to keep up after rigorous activity for 30 minutes.
I would have liked to see their defense hold up in all those situations and maybe the prevent needs to be improved upon but in all those games if the offense sustains drives then the defense will be able to actually catch their breath.
November 30th, 2013 at 4:37 PM ^
when he was out against Iowa, the defense got really porous. . .

November 30th, 2013 at 4:27 PM ^
Agreed on Hyde. Dude is like an effing Mack truck out there. Miller's not going to the NFL this year, unless it's as an RB. Even after next year, I don't see him being an NFL QB. His future in the NFL is taking handoffs, IMO.

Plus Wile's extra points were barely going through and he missed the TOed field goal by a mile. Can't go into overtime without a kicker. I like the call to go for two, but didn't like the actual playcall. Three receivers one side of the field? Would've liked to see them get Gardner moving (if he wasn't too banged up).
November 30th, 2013 at 4:19 PM ^
He was too banged up. That was pretty obvious--he was having some trouble even setting to throw once he got moving, and he wasn't much of a threat to run.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:41 PM ^
Wouldve like to see a counter-draw or crossing route on the 2 point.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
with the same play on the 2 point conversion - should have spread the field out more
November 30th, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
They could've given up 2 TDs down but they would not let it happen. Tremendous credit to everyone involved.
November 30th, 2013 at 3:44 PM ^
To everyone who had given up on these kids and spewed vitiriol about how they were embarrassed to be a U of M fan...
...we'll welcome you back. There is always room for fairweather fans.
Great game. Congratulations to the team.
Great job by the coaches. Great exectution by the players. 3 yards shy against an undefeated team in the greatest rivalry in college football.
I'm looking forward to the bowl game and to next season.
Go Blue!
