You assume she knows nothing about football? Sexist...
FWIW, I think the original comment was pretty dumb since we scored 18 points on 3 drives in OT...

How many coaches have called fake FGs or gone for it on 4th? Hoke has and every other coach in the nation has.
To say NEVER isn't true, and it's stupid.
You can disagree, but "NEVER"...like he broke some unwritten rule? C'mon.
And it wasn't a bad call to go for it. The PLAY CALL was awful. It put all the pressure on the OL to execute and they're just as bad a play call.
Plenty of coaches would go for it, wasn't that much of a stretch. You just have to call a better play.
Run a QB Blast with the RB as an extra blocker. Run a PA Y-Banana to the fullback like you ran in OT. Both of those plays are far more likely to succeed and neither is relying on "tricking" the defense like the QB bootleg.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:18 PM ^
2. Say we kick a FG and make it. What about our offense had shown you that we are likely to go down and get another score to win that game?
I would much rather put all my marbles on getting 2 yards than kicking a FG, getting a stop and going down again and getting a score.
And i certainly didn't feel confident in our team in OT (based in the PSU game, and how we had played this entire game)
November 17th, 2013 at 10:44 AM ^
the FG practically ensures OT. NW would have to drive and make a FG into that wind to win. wasn't going to happen. kick that FG and we still have the better chance to win in regulation, imo.

I think it was the right call and Hoke (and many other coaches) is going to go for it every other time.
Take the points if it gives you the lead. Take the points if you're ahead.
The problem was the playcall. Again, it relied on "tricking" the defense. It also put ALL of the pressure on the OL to block for Devin.
If the OL doesn't block or if the defense doesn't bite on the fake, it doesn't work. That's exactly what happened.
Run a QB Blast or run that PA pass to Kerridge the FB for the 2 yards. Or just line up and run a normal short yardage play. But don't try and trick them and get cute on a crucial down or play.
Run that play on 2nd or 3rd down, not 4th down.

despite losing a lot of faith in Hoke this season, I'm totally in his corner on that one. Never a need to apologize for being aggresive and playing to win. Play to win, man. Wasn't crazy about running into the short side of the field, but yeah, different issue.
Getting the field goal team on for the fire drill kick was the best execution on a play I've seen all year. It was the first time I thought "Holy shit, they look like they practiced that a million times." Great job by players and coaches alike.

I am sooo happy that Hoke only worries about what is going on with the team. He says he does not care what the fans think, GODS bless him. I can only hope they run the table and save Borges from a Irony that only Rich Rod deserved. Everyone wants to fire the O coordinator that is so rich the irony is dripping off, first its fire Rich Rod, now its hire someone like Rich Rod, who can score on every play. I am sure you guys would have wanted Bo fired when his team went 6 and 6 and said he was in way over his head. He had that type of season with the players He recruited. His offensive line had plenty of upper classmen. I can't imagine what you guys would be saying after 94' 95' 96' with Lloyd Carr he would have been way over his head too.

Be happy we won. But don't dismiss the past few weeks because of it.
Beating a shitty NW team and scoring 9 points in regulation doesn't all of a sudden mean everyone's bitching is now invalid.
And compaing this team to those 94-96 teams is a joke. The conference was MUCH stronger then and none of those teams were this bad. All of them were ranked. They all beat the teams that they should've beaten. And you're not going to find too many of the loses or even struggles to unranked teams.
NW and PSU were both very good in the mid-90's. We're struggling against MAC teams and bad B1G teams. It's not the same.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:30 PM ^
No way dude. If we're anything but 100% positive about this game we're just way too negative.
Am I glad we won? Sure. But I'm not gonna get all giddy about beating a team that has been on a downward spiral all year and is a team we should've beat.
If we can beat Iowa AT Iowa next week, consider some of my trust in Hoke back.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:37 PM ^
I was jumping up and down like the rest of you.
But it doesn't excuse anything. It doesn't mean I can't talk about the mistakes that were made or acknowledge that we struggled versus a BAD B1G team and had 9 points in regulation on offense.
It doesn't mean PSU, MSU and Nebraska are forgiven.
It doesn't mean our offensive coordinator has LOST games for this team by simply not calling plays that focus and rely on the weakness of this offense (or calling plays that take advantage of it strengths).
I'm very happy we won. But I hate that it's like you can't say anything but positive or like everything from the past is old and forgiven.
The comments being made aren't about wins and losses, they're about playing to your potential and putting the players in the best position to win games.
Anyone remember the basketball game at IU last year? I gave Coach Beilein a standing O that game. With gameday their, #1 vs. #2, that atmosphere...there was nothing more we could've done to win that game. I'd say the same about the NC game too, but the refs blew our chance at that one.
The point is, you just want to see us play our best and the coaches put everyone in the best possible position to win. Then let the chips fall where they may.
Until that happens, people have the right to bitch, moan and complain.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:40 PM ^
Michigan did that vs. ND outside of that ONE play.
(I don't know why anyone would call a PA bootleg when they're in their own endzone. You're relying on tricking the defense. Just like today, Borges called a PA bootleg on 4th and 2.)
But other than that one play...and some questionable PI calls by the refs (in our favor). Our coaches and players played/coached to their potential. It was refreshing to watch.
So it can happen. Win or lose.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:41 PM ^
Borges has still cost us a lot of games this year. We didn't play very well today outside of overtime.

I'd be interested in seeing the breakdown. Does football cost them money or does funding non revenue sports put the AD in the red? The figures I see tossed around usually refer to an AD on the whole -- not just football but I could be mistaken.

Think Hoke called that last T/O cuz Gardner got rocked pretty hard on a hit - & was a crucial down. Smart T/O IMO
4th down call wasn't the smartest - but I liked it. Play call was gay tho.
Liked Hoke showing some fire on the sidelines. About damn time ...
Borges was better - but not worthy of him keeping his job.
Props to getting that last sec kick off ... that was bad ass! Yea ...haha
