I wasn't on the fire Funk train but after watching Lewan and Schofield regress to where they are now is squarely on his shoulders. I don't think either one of those guys has gotten worse as a senior so obviously it's on the coaches. Ferrigno needs to be on the hot seat too. If anyone goes this offseason it needs to be OC / OL / TE

This was not the worst of Al Borges... am I the only one who thinks Gardner looked a lot more poised both throwing and running the ball in OT? The only incompletions were drops by the recievers...

Also, that fake hitch where Gardner would pretend to throw to the sideline then late handoff to Green was money and that's all Borges scheming to get the run going. Very nice adjustment and it may have won the game for us based on the number of 5-6 yard first downs we gained.

I thought today's play-calling actually wasn't that bad. Last week was the worst I've seen since OSU last year, but today really was about a lack of execution, in my opinion.

Not kicking the FG was awful, and the fade to Gallon was pretty bad too, but I thought the drives were killed by bad execution: Gallon with the drops, O-line having some lapses (Schofield comes to mind), Gardner looking awful for the first 59:00, etc.

I think Borges still needs to go, but the 9 points in regulation had more to do with the kids than the coaches (for once), I thought.

My problem with the call is that you know your line isn't opening up any holes, you haven't been able to pick up a third and short in weeks, you just lost a yard on third and one...  there is no reason to make that call there.  Now, if the offense is rolling a bit, maybe.  But with this offense, take the points when they are there.

So sad dude, so sad.  After reading a comment like this it's obvious that the extent of your sports ended at "everyone plays" city rec leagues.  As Coach Hoke said, these kids are playing for each other, and for Michigan.  YOU might not be happy with the win, and YOU might think that the season is meaningless, but there are 100+ guys, plus all the coaches and staff, that have put more effort into this season than you've likely put into anything.

Oh, and you can see the future huh?  So, where is the top for the S&P?  Let me know so I can get my shorts in.

too bad they aren't playing for the fans, since if it wasn't for the fans they wouldnt be playing football at all.  Im not sure why its so hard for people to understand that college football exisits for the fans, not for the players.  take away the 100,000 fans and some of these players wouldnt even be going to college

In the past 3 years, our QBs have been regressing during the season. I don't care about this game's result, the play call is still bad enough anyway. Many of them are still very predictable, I can even tell from TV what they are trying to do based on the formation. DG is staring the WR when throwing, and to avoid INT, he is willing to take sacks, but missed a lot fo WR one on one chance. There is no way we can win more game without throwing deep.

Awesome call. You're not going to get it every time. Made me believe in Hoke again. So proud of the gutsy call to go for the win.

Yeah but it didn't. You're so obsessed with hating on the staff that you've resorted to complaining about thing that DIDN'T happen, and can't even give credit for a GREAT play that took preparation and amazing calm. Sad.

You are obsessed with hating on the staff so much you cannot bring yourself to enjoy a B10 road win. Admit it, you wanted us to lose and said maybe 20 times that we would. I saw your negative crap stinking up the in game thread. All you did was predict doom. Never ANYTHING even resembling positivity. Fucking sad.

Wanted us to lose? No. No matter how bad, that wouldn't happen.

Said that we would lose? No. Go back and read the thread.

Said a lot of negative stuff about bad things that were happening? Yes.

Sorry if I don't get too giddy about a win against a big ten doormat in which we still didn't look very good outisde of overtime.

Good: Defense. Hoke's teams never giving up. Quick FG preparation. Play calling in all OTs. Offensive line being much better than ever on most runs. Borges' weird bubble/draw pairing. He threw it early to set up the paired draw, then brought it back in a crucial situation in OT after having success with the draw. Still not a true constraint, more like a -- natch -- burned play used to set something else up. Bad: Going for it instead of the tie. I can't wait to see what the numbers say about this, but I hated it. Of course, my game theory was developed under Lloyd Carr. Funchess fumbling. Gardner throwing it at the defense 4-6 times. Gallon dropping a wide open TD in OT. In short, (this sucks for you guys) execution. Here's one for the mob: 4th down Gardner boot keep was predictable! Ugly: Northwestern's jerseys. The Borges narrative being forced to change due to running an almost perfect MGoBlog offense and it still stinking. Pass protection, particularly on really stupid rolling pockets.

What in the hell is going on we won it doesn't matter how. I have watched the Lions for the last 40 yrs and if I learned anything it is if you won or lost Thats it, NOTHING else matters. I thought for sure we wouldn't have to listen to nickb "fire Borges, fire Borges, fire Borges,"  It won't b long till he asking for Hokes head along with the rest of this fire Borges crowd . I would have swore he would have been at the Spartan game. Maybe he actually is a UM fan, naw those who bleed maise and blue know that these seasons happen even during the Bo years when he had all his recruits in place.

I'm always happy about a win. But if this saves Borges' job, it won't be worth it. The only positive thing that can come out of the off-season is Al and Coach Funk's firings. That being said, as long as Hoke is in charge, we have an unacceptably low ceiling, probably somewhere around 8-5. He's shown over and over this season that he's not the man. He's in way over his head and needs to go. After 8-5/7-6 in 2014 and 2015, he'll be let go, but it's going to be a tough couple years.

WHen the O-Line is as poor as our's, you need to go with the big backs that can gain a yard or two after contact or break arm-tackles.  That's not Fitz's game.

The weakness of the O-Line should have been acknowledged a while ago, and this move made a while ago.

The coaching was still pretty bad.  How many times did they run something, get good yardage, and then go back to the same play, only to have Northwestern ready for it and it get stuffed?  What about counters?

How does quoting someone who knows nothing about football prove that we run the same plays over and over again? Isn't it likely that most plays are going to look similar bc she doesn't know the nuances of football? I am not defending Borges at all, but I am just sick of seeing people say "even my wife..." It's a dumb way to try an prove a point

MGoKalamazoo

November 16th, 2013 at 9:13 PM ^

Because my wife is competent enough to see the same formation over and over throughout the game. And the quarterback is doing the same thing he did under the previous formation. The wide receivers also did the same thing with each formation. Need I go on? So yes, I guess she knows the nuances of a Michigan offense. Dumb or not, that's your opinion.

I would love to know how she knew that the WRs did the same thing on every play when you can't even see what the WRs were doing on most plays?
Obviously they were blocking on run plays, but was she able to pick up what route combinations we were running throughout the game? If so I would like to know what they were
