Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This will be this evening's thread to discuss issues with the coaching and any issues you may have with the staff in general.

I've had a lot of wine and no dinner. In this moment, I have zero confidence in our coaching staff. Zero. I hope I feel differently tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to going into the office on Monday. Jfc.

our defense really REALLY fell apart.  Coaching not great.

our offense, particularly OL was the worst I've ever seen.  I can't imagine how FUNK should keep his job.  Same for Borges.

It is true that we get the higher rated players than MSU but have not been able to coach them up recently.  That really is on coaching development and play calling.

Borges and Funk both have to go...  The O-line is a trainwreck, and don't use the young excuse.  Plenty of other teams do more with less.  Devin has regressed - Borges is the QB coach.  Borges play calling and schemes are awful.   He doesn't play to his team's strength and his ability to prepare a gameplan is obviously flawed.

Hoke...his seat should be red hot right now.  Taking care of Funk & Borges is the only way to save face at this point.  This team is soft and that's on Hoke.  Poor road performances abound and questionable game management at times.   This team was not put in a position to win today.

Oh and everyone saying OSU hasn't played anyone, blah blah blah....  They look like world beaters when they should (them against Purdue - us against UConn, Akron, etc...).  Urban will roll it up on us.

Hey Al,

I've kept my mouth shut all year. I have "trusted" in Hoke's decision to keep you around. But man, YOU FUCKING SUCK. Blame Funk while you're at it. You all suck on offense. You are just plain awful. I'm not saying bench Gardner or anyone, I'm saying FIRE BORGES. I will not watch a game til OSU. Season tickets are for sale. Call me an overractor but I have kept my mouth shut until now. We suck and I'm pissed.

Why do these things happen to us. Its coaching. We are getting worse on the oline and our dline is completely irrelevant. But who coaches dline? Hoke and Gmatt.

Who develops that personnel? MSU does not out recruit Michigan, so it is a matter of which coaching staff is developing their players. This is year three for Hoke's staff and they look worse than in year one.

I'd say 55% Borges and 45% O-line.  I put the majority on Borges because it is his offense to build and game plan.  He needs to put together a game plan which maximizes the players he has.  That being said, the performance of the O-line today was an utter failure.

We have this line* because offensive line wasn't a high recruiting priority for Rodriguez, I assume because it didn't need to be to run his offense, just like it wasn't for Leach, say, or isn't now at Indiana. But I look at the total breakdowns in the interior of the line when we run a read option and I have trouble imagining how his offense would work with this particular set of upperclassmen. Where would be if he had stayed? Could this line run a spread?

----

*I don't mean any disrespect to any players here--it's not their fault they're on the field before they're ready. I see the situation as very much like Navarre's freshman year, except that it involves three positions instead of just one. Navarre got a lot of crap but he had precisely zero culpability for the fact that he was the only feasible QB on the roster. It had nothing to do with any failure on the part of the staff to develop him, either. It was a recruiting meta-failure, much like this is.

And since we've already fired the people responsible, I don't think there's really much to be done but wait it out. Two years from now we'll be in good shape, unless we panic.

Part of Hoke's motto is "we're going to be accountable."  Okay.  Who is going to be accountable?  We just saw the worst Michigan offensive line performance of my lifetime (82 grad).  Who is going to be accountable?

That belongs on this staff is Madison. Hoke can recruit all the good players he wants but if you can only be their friend, you're not winning games.

I was panned for saying last week that MSU has a better football program than us right now. There is no clearer evidence after today's game that that's true. They have an identity and a global strategy, and they execute it magnificently and with great preparedness. They are confident and decisive. We are floundering, have no identity, no confidence, no zest. We have systemic problems. I thought our program was out of the wilderness after RR was let go. Not even close. Every one of us would trade programs with State right now, whether you'll admit it or not.

Yep, we had this conversation among a few other regulars on the board last week.  Lots of UM fans in denial. It was all about lack of opponents or avoiding OSU or whatever.

Sparty has a system, recruits to it, and now like Wisconsin they dont need top 10 classes to do well.  MSU recruits in the 30s/40s like Wisconsin but finds players that fit their system and most important DEVELOPS them.  I can find very few players that have gotten demonstrably better in Hoke's tenure.  The pit in my stomach is this is Carr 2.0 again.  We will always recruit good enough to have 3-4 loss seasons but our coaching at the position level seems to be very average.  MSU does more with way less.

This is Weis-esque. Fat Charlie had great classes but developed nobody and the years they were any good Quinn was running for his life behind an awful line. Yes, this team is extremely young, but there's enough talent to compete. I'm very interested to see Brian's take on RPS next week. It seemed to me our staff got outfoxed by Dantanio's crew again. Frankly, next year will likely be worse with 0 upper classmen on the O-line. And we get to play there again. I love my alma mater too much to stop caring, but working with Spartans and ESS EEE SEE slappies makes life un-fun. I'll just temper my enthusiasm until 2015. Wow, I feel better now.

Does any coach develop players as well as Dantonio and his staff? Michigan has consistently out-recruited MSU yet MSU gets more out of their players. Hoke just doesn't develop players like Dantonio does. Plain and simple. Recruiting classes only get you so far. To be successful there has to be a staff in place to get them to that next level. Michigan just isn't cutting it...

Since our running game is TERRIBLE anyway, why not put a FB or RB in who can help block in pass protection.  Fitz is an ok runner, but Fitz has consistenly been destroyed in PASS Pro...and not just today against MSU.  Every week Fitz throws look out blocks.  Since the O-Line is so bad, why not put in a RB who is better at Pass Pro than Fitz.  Now I know why V Smith always came in for Fitz on 3rd downs...I hoped that Fitz would learn from that.  Having said all that, Fitz is only 1 of MANY blocking problems.  It's not all on Fitz...it's on our O-Line, Borges, and Funk.  You gotta put the players into positions to succeed.  Our schemes suck.  FML.

Brady Hoke is an embarassment to the University.  Time to hire the best available coach out there, not just a "Michigan Man."  If you don't need to be a Michigan Man to be a fan then you certainly don't need to be one to be a coach.

I want a leader, somebody with ingenunity.  Somebody that actually has some sort of tangible control over what occurs during the game.  Brady Hoke is not that man.

Funk needs to be replaced and Borges needs to learn how to adjust during the game and diversify out of that 3 wide set he ran all damn day to no avail.

I will return Tuesday or so as I expect this place to be a sh*tstorm the next 48 hours but will just say other than a moderately better defense this looked like 2010's Rich Rod's team.  Unable to do anything against a good defense, completely reliant on a Superman QB or else there is no offense, underwhelming physical nature and out coached.   Hoke had 2011 but other than that the team has not made significant strides versus the 2010 team other than some upgrades on defense from awful to average.   We had 2 weeks to prepare and could not manage a TD.  Indiana put up 28.  This program has not really progressed for 3 years.

Really doesnt matter what happens the rest of the year - like ND (ex their magic of 2012) these are 2 dinosaur programs of the Midwest relying on their laurels and pretenders.  2014 we go to EL with an even younger OL.  Wisconsin and MSU right now are above us... by a good measure.

...you want to criticize Hoke & Co. for not recruiting more OLs in '09-'11 (yes, I realize Hoke came in at the tail end of '11), I'm not sure what you bitch about here with the exception of maybe a few calls here or there.

Fucking a...what do you people want Borges to do? He tried spread concepts, deep balls, short passes...nothing worked consistently. Because everything they ran was blown up within the first 3 seconds at least 3/4th of the time.

THIS ISN'T TO SAY BORGES DESERVES NO BLAME.

But seriously...that was some of the worst Oline blocking I have EVER seen in a football game. Funk will probably need to go, honestly. I know they're inexperienced players, and I know they played the best defense in the country...but holy crap was that awful.
