having a basketball player on all our football gear is dumb and, in my view, just isn't ever going to be smart. Love me some MJ, even love the logo/design, will be psyched to see it on the bball unis. But to me it's almost as if Nike said, "Let's just see what level of corporate ludicrous we can get the school to swallow!" when it comes to placing it on football gear.

Could be wrong, but I don't think this is just a matter of getting old or being of a certain cast of mind--more one of simple common sense.

in this opinion. Michigan is about far more than just potential future players. Everyone who ever went to Michigan is just as/more important an audience as high shcool recruits, And if you just want to go by dollars and cents instead of my point, potential buyers of gear are also far more important than recurits.

Recruits aren't the only ones that matter, but they matter a lot.

Why? Because recruits turn into players, and players win games. And no design, no logo, no color is going to do a better job of selling products than winning games will.

I don't live in the Twin Cities, but even when I visit I rarely see University of Minnesota gear. And I almost never see it up here in Duluth, 2 hours and change away. It's not the designs or the logos or the colors that are the problem; the problem is that people aren't excited about the Gophers because the Gophers don't win.

It is certainly arguable whether or not a particular logo will influence a recruit to go to a school. But if a school is the sort of place where the athlete's opinions are going to matter in that (relatively meaningless) way, it may seem like a more attractive, friendly place. And even if it's not the logo that does it, it is potentially part of a mentality that has the potential to draw more recruits.

And recruits make teams. And teams win games. And wins sell shirts.

This is a very circular argument.
Sure recruits are important and anything that helps them get on board is valuable, but similar to fans, they love winning. And just as you said that fans won't buy great if the team is not winning, recruits generally won't come if your team is losing, and they definitely won't come if your team had no fanbase.
In summary, just win and you'll be fine. Keep both fans and recruits happy and that will help. And don't ever hire a pizza man to run your ad.

I think it looks stupid on a football uniform. Put it on the basketball jerseys and shoes, but not football. But, most people around here think it's sacreligous to say something negative about Nike......

I'm 27 and actually don't find it akward at all.  I guess growing up I've always just looked at the Jumpman as another brand.  No different than I look at Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, Reebok ect.  To be honest, I like it more than I thought I would and I was a fan of the move from the jump.

I get the impulse to say a football tee with a basketball logo is dumb. But it is also different and fun. I am old (34) and get that the younger generation likes it more than I will. All that aside, the overall look is pretty damn good.

it just looks tacky.

the best student football shirt that ever existed was the 2003 shirt -

why? The helmet was slightly different shade but directly blended into the shirt, which is tastefully done. The front of the shirt wasn't busy, it had the M/year/and helmet.

The back of the shirt didn't have a stupid schedule. Having the schedule there is artistically lazy - at least have our accomplishments listed, a quote from Bo, hell - anything but the schedule. Give people something unique and fun each year that celebrates the history of Michigan, not some stupid schedule.

Seriously though - this a huge 100M+ year contract, and I'm year over year disappointed in what the student shirt ends up being. I'm an alumnus now, don't even wear the student shirts anymore, but it just strikes as being lazy/not Michigan with the crappy designs they've managed to come up with during the Adidas era, and this Nike shirt isn't much better.

To each their own I guess, but the new one is a much improved version of the 2003 shirt. Maize on maize is what I would call lazy and tacky. To be perfectly honest, I would have thought that was a bootleg shirt made by someone at home if I didn't know any better.

The schedule on the back is what makes the student shirt the student shirt. It's not about being artistic. You can wear this shirt years later and be reminded of the game you attended.

they started these when I was in school there and I have generally hated them.  The front of this one is actually pretty good but seriously WHY IS THE SCHEDULE CONSTANTLY ON THE BACK.  Who doesn't know the schedule at this point?  Who doesn't have a smart phone to look it up?  I just don't understand it, but maybe I am just getting old... although I hated the schedule on the back when I was not old...
