Snake Oil Roundup

Submitted by blueadams on

according to rivals (http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1032721) we are going to be able to take 29 in this class. right now we have 28 commitments (3 silent commitments - grimes, murphy, parker). that leaves us with 1 scholarship to give, but there are still 4 positions we are hitting hard. SOMETHING is up!?

#1) NT. It sounds like Johnathon Hankins might be leaning towards ohio state. It sounds like Jatushan Beachum might be leaning towards arkansas. That sucks, but I wouldn't count us out on either at this point. It sounds like Mike Thornton and Todd Chandler are both sort of wild-cards at this point, but who knows there, SNAKE OIL. If none of these options work out, then it sounds like we might take Roney Lozano of Florida.

#2) OL. It sounds like we're still in the game for Torrian Wilson and a mystery recruit - probably either James Hurst or Andrew Donnal. So, clearly, we want to add a second olineman in this class. The way we are going after nose-tackles AND olinemen leads me to believe that our coaching staff thinks at least one commitment won't qualify (drake!?).

#3) DE. It sounds like Jibreel Black is going to come in for a visit. I've still got a sneaking suspicion that we can get Derrick Bryant (the ucla commitment from ohio). Then there's that David Mackall kid we're still going after. I wonder if signing one of these guys means not signing Murphy, Kinard or Paskorz!? I mean, we have 4 DE/Q players signed already. Doesn't make sense to sign 5 with so many other guys on the table.

#4) ILB. Rich Rod has offered two inside backers offers in the last month - Quayshawn Nealy and Darrin Kitchens. Both are sort of wild-cards at this point in the game. But again, who knows, SNAKE OIL. If these options don't work out, and we have room to add an inside backer, I'd expect to see us go with Steve Mehrer from ohio. If two commitments don't qualify...or we get some unexpected de-commits, I think that we are reserving our last spot for one of these inside backers. It's pretty clear that we want one...but it's also pretty clear that we're not pushing THAT hard for any of them.

He obviously is pointing out that there have been about 2 of these threads per day (not an exact number). I think you did a good job at breaking it down and I'm perfectly fine with your post, but he has a point. Both of those quotes are obviously not meant to be referring to the same thing. You, sir, are the idiot. No need to be harsh towards a guy for throwing out two things that are true.

How many threads must you start per day? If you are not careful you will become the next em0 unless that is who you are? I have no problem with this post, though the same question has been asked multiple times, just the frequency.

And had you posted information about anything factual it may have made sense but Parker is NOT a silent commit nor is he "in the bag" as a commitment at all. We may have a good chance but the race isn't over. The rest of your post was a summary of every other recruiting thread on the board.....gee thanks for the informative information.

out of the three guys we already have that are DE's/Q. hurst would be a huge get. the scouts think he could be another jake long. for some reason, i think that taylor, the MLB from georgia, could be another wild card here. and you're right about bryant, even though i haven't heard much since his commitment. we were looking good in the early stages. also, i didn't know parker was a silent commitment.

Emo has very little political capital around here considering his previous meltdowns. People have been more than patient allowing Emo to work himself back into good graces even when it was obvious it was him.

We should tell the people who write this blog they're not needed for their weekly Recruiting Roundup (although I've sworn I've read everything from the OP in their RRs, every week, for the past month or so). BlueAdams produces one every day based on his hunches from reading MGo, Rivals and Scout.

And if there's one reason to hate Joe Tiller, it's the god forsaken use of the term Snake Oil.

if Tiller never said the snake oil comment, we would never have the picture of RR with the wizard hat and the bottle of snake oil, which makes me chuckle every time I see it. In addition, the thought of Joe Tiller throwing a tantrum about it still make me feel warm and fuzzy. So, you have to take the good with the bad, I guess...

I like "snake oil" as a way of describing Rich Rodriguez magic recruiting powers. It leaves me feeling like we always have a chance to get anybody right down until the final moment of signing day. We should probably thank purdue for adding this phrase to our collective vocabulary.

I agree that when used in moderation, it is funny and sometimes chuckle worthy.

However, it's on the front board here twice, and it gets used for EVERY RECRUIT Rich Rod secures, whether committed elsewhere or not. Courtney Avery, the Talbotts, Devin Gardner, Cullen Christian, Richard Ash, Sean Parker, everyone else still on the board.

I like judicious and appropriate use of the term. Perhaps there need to be proper parameters for use of the term? Like, perhaps limited to actual Signing Day or near S-Day situations like Q, Je'Ron and Tree that are legitimately recruiting breakthroughs that justify the term?

...the snake oil thing was funny but of course is now wildly overused for every recruit with the remotest possibility of switching, even if that possibility exists solely in the OP's mind.

Also, not to gripe too much but links to things behind paywalls are not particularly useful to the average reader.

Tiller's use of snake oil, iirc, was used of Roundtree decommitting from Purdue and then committing almost immed. to Michigan. If correct, this means that to use the term, you really need someone highly rated to decommit and then almost immed. commit to Michigan, pref. within a day or two of signing day. So if a 4 or 5 star who is committed to ND, OSU, USC, UF, etc., decommits on signing day and signs later that day with UM, you have clear snake oil, that really screws someone else over.

If this isn't K06em I will be shocked. This post is identical to all his old ones. But the true giveaway is when someone questions his thread he immediately starts with the wise cracks/sarcasm, which in turn gets him negged into oblivion. Keep it up k06 only 181 negbangs till you get to make a new username. AGAIN.

I agree with everyone else about Parker. We are one of three finalists for his services, not sure how you make him out to be a silent commit? Until Tom VH or Brain says otherwise we should all just sit tight and wait to see what happens.

EDIT: In the time it took me to type this you have been negged 13 more times. You are well on your way my friend. Tone it down a little bit brah, dang.
