Smurf Turf has Nothing on Eastern Washington
Eastern Washington is getting a new red field to compete with Boise's Smurf Turf. Hopefully, this results in a run on theme fields...Michigan State could cleverly have a "Sparty Green" field, Northwestern could have the "Purple Haze," and just imagine what an orange field at Tennessee would look like in HD.

Oh my eyes!!!
Seriously though... that would be exceptionally annoying to play on. If the field was brown it would make fumbles so much more fun.

Eyes indeed. On my TV, that would cause massive amounts of pain to everyone in the room.
Also: Over/Under on a thread suggesting Maize Turf by the end of the day?
January 28th, 2010 at 10:43 AM ^
5 mentions of a maize turf field, with 3 of the 5 also requesting maize alternate jerseys for a night game.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
I'll take the under on that, with only 4, but all four will request maize jerseys and a night game.

THEY SHOULD PUT MAIZE TURF IN MICHIGAN STADIUM!!

We need maize helmets, too.

I considered it, but I'm too much of a traditionalist to even think about touching the wings.

Like it said in the article, this could start a chian reaction of crazy colors going down. I see the NCAA nipping this in the bud.

they've never shown any level of incompetency, right?
January 28th, 2010 at 1:45 PM ^
Excellent point, sadly.
January 28th, 2010 at 11:58 AM ^
I believe they've already banned non-green turf for 1-A schools (with Boise grandfathered in).
January 28th, 2010 at 12:27 PM ^
A believable one, but a myth nonetheless.
January 29th, 2010 at 12:35 PM ^
this is a myth.

That field is just not right!
January 28th, 2010 at 10:33 AM ^
It's a good thing a red challenge flag isn't needed to get a play reviewed like in the NFL.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
At least the field will hide the blood stains...
January 28th, 2010 at 10:53 AM ^
That field has the same effect as the Kenny Rogers Roasters sign from Sinefeld.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
thankfully we don't have the Nike contract anymore, otherwise we would have a maize field one weekend, a blue the next...
January 28th, 2010 at 12:40 PM ^
they'd come up with some really crazy idea like combining the maize field with the blue field at the same time. I can't even imagine how terrible that would look...
January 28th, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
Not as bad as what they'd do to the yard lines, which would cease to be straight.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:25 PM ^
I was a making a very subtle joke about how yellow + blue = green.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
That explains the whooshing noise when I hit "save." I thought it was my browser acting up.
January 28th, 2010 at 11:00 AM ^
Maize turf here, with white lines and numbers... and thousands of blue M's all over the field in a random, scattered arrangement
January 28th, 2010 at 11:09 AM ^
Perhaps one of the only instances where color-blind people win.
January 28th, 2010 at 11:11 AM ^
...smurf turf, FieldTurf. What's the damn difference. Give me grass.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:43 PM ^
You liked the mudpit we had from 1991-2002?
January 28th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
... It's a slippery slope from synthetic turf to playing in a dome. Next thing you know you are rooting for Syracuse.
January 29th, 2010 at 8:54 AM ^
purdue pretty much showed that the grass field at the big house was never going to work... michigan weather at its finest that day...

Headache medicine companies are behind the odd colored turf. I have never been able to watch more than fifteen minutes of a game at B.State without getting huge headaches. Fortunately I cannot recall ever watching E. Washington on tv. Didn't even know they had a team.

Bingo.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:28 PM ^
As long as VT doesn't put their colors on the whole field like this, I don't mind the trend.
January 28th, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
and if Eastern Washington wants to change their field, I am all for it. I just don't see Alabama, Florida, or Michigan and the like to ever doing this.
January 28th, 2010 at 2:53 PM ^
Spartan Stadium shouldn't change its turf color, but they should replace the white lines with wider silver bars.
January 29th, 2010 at 3:24 AM ^
You have to take a lot of meth before the idea of a colored field begins to appeal to you.
