Smart Football: Wide Nine
For those of you interested in what the announcers keep referring to as the "Wide Nine formation" in Lions games, here is Chris Brown's take on the topic. Basically, it's nothing new, nothing special; just telling your DEs to get really aggressive.

This is interesting, but not nearly as interesting as the ad for PETA that says" Michigan Abuses Cats".
Not that I'm for animal abuse but given this blogs penchant for sad kittens I find that ad hilarious.

Not a fan of the wide 9 on non-passing situations. It leaves you too vulnerable to the inside run (i.e. the trap play). On obvious passing downs I love it because it gives a great outside rush for quick pass rushers.

Especially without the right personnel (i.e. LBs who are big and can tackle which is not who the Eagles have) it leads to running backs with gimpy ankles running all over you in the second half and wasting away a 23-3 halftime lead. At least they finally got "wise" and modified it to prevent getting gashed by the run. I'm curious to see if that trend continues...

as well as the Lions is Eagles LB play sucked. Lions LB play is much much better than the Eagles.
