Small Retraction

Submitted by Ziff72 on

Shockingly Ray Small is in a nice backpedal on his statements.

The thing that really grinds my gears is his "Chris Webber Story" of poverty.  Please someone correct me if I'm wrong here with the facts of how a scholarship works.

Small states that he he had to sell his rings to pay his rent,  it was either pay the rent or get evicted.  He has a scholarship that pays for his housing.  If he lives off campus from what I have been told they give him a certain amount for rent.  As I understand the common practice you get 4 guys and rent a house.  The rent can be covered by 2 guys and the remaining money is for pizza,  kegs and condoms.

I know a lot of people have financial trouble, but these tales don't do it for me.

I was thinking the same thing, they usually get a cost of living check or something along that line that is acceptable by the NCAA. I have a sick feeling in my stomach though that the bare minimum of what we want to happen won't in regards to punishment.

I think with everything that has come out and will come out, if the NCAA doesn't lay the hammer down on OSU, nobody will take them seriously ever again, and schools will flaunt the rules (especially the big ones) so egregiously, knowing nothing of consequence will be taken from them.

If that happens, the whole system needs to be blown up.

He is trying to save face with his "sacred brotherhood". When the shit hits the fan he'll be the Jose Canseco of this situation, though.

It's interesting to hear Mike Leach's take on all this on rivals.  He's in favor of paying the kids a stipend, but he says that these stories about not having enough money to eat or pay the rent are "Fairy Tales" and hurt the credibility of the argument.

How good is the average teenager at budgeting? A lot of them probably didn't have rent or food money.

I learned how to budget by eating ham sandwiches at the end of the month for a few months. My guess is that most college kids do the same thing.

I'm sure it is true that Small had trouble paying rent because he blew that money on nice cars, food, drinks, clothing, etc.  In that sense, he's like virtually all teenagers in college.  But I'm sure that if he needed money, he could have found a legal way to do so.  To sell memorabilia acquired from the school while still a student is so patently against the rules on its face that even an idiot (which by all accounts he is) should have known it was wrong.  So no, I don't care about his cries of poverty - there were better options out there.

I gotta say Ray Small is an idiot. I'm glad the Lantern put the actual audio out for the public to hear. As Ron White would say you can't fix stupid.

or even not poor college student when I was in school.  They looked nasty, but a lot of kids ate them'cause they were cheap and easy, probably like all their fat little girlfriends.
