Slippery Rock Football

Submitted by nmumike on

I thought the board might be interested in a weekly Slippery Rock update for those of you who could not make it to the game.

Last year their QB Nigel Barksdale had ACL surgery at the end of last year, and in the season opener had quite an impressive game, throwing for 465 yds and 6(!) TDs. They beat Northwood 51-36 in a game that was played with some impressive stats.

From the article "The game was played at a breakneck pace, with both teams utilizing a hurry-up offense and snapping the ball almost immediately after it was signaled in-play. As a result, Slippery Rock ran an incredible 110 offensive plays during the game, while Northwood ran 80 plays. The teams combined for a whopping 1,127 yards of total offense."

I will continue to do this on a weekly basis, unless there is no interest...

The announcing of the Slippery Rock score is a tradition at University of Michigan football games. This tradition began in 1959 by Michigan Stadiumannouncer Steve Filipiak. In the past, it was a tradition at many stadiums to announce Slippery Rock's scores, schools such as TexasNorth Carolina,Stanford,[4] and California. Michigan is the only school that still continues this tradition.

Slippery Rock has played twice at Michigan Stadium in the teams history. They have taken on Shippensburg University in 1979 and Wayne State Warriorsin 1981. In front of 61,143 fans, Slippery Rock lost to Shippensburg by a score of 45–14. The 61,143 fans was a record for most people to be in attendance to watch a Division II football game. Two years later Slippery Rock faced Wayne State and lost by a score of 14–13 in front of 35,000 plus fans, this is also among the top in attendance totals for a Division II football game.

and here is a story with some more detail:

"The unlikely marriage between Slippery Rock and Michigan began in 1959 when Steve Filipiak, Michigan’s public address announcer, saw the funny name on the wire service ticker. Wanting to inject life into a boring game, Filipiak read the score. The fans loved it."

Given the history, I think this could turn into a neat feature each week actually.

The box score - which is subdivided (follow the button links) - is HERE.

In the air, Slippery Rock was 29-of-48 for 472 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs. On the ground, they managed 61 carries for 203 yards.

I would say definitely do it.  The Slippery Rock tradition is pretty widely acknowledged among UM fans, and one post a week won't clutter the board.  I think a lot of folks would enjoy hearing about it, especially those of us who can'ts go to the Stadium and hear the scores announced there! :)

I don't know if this corrects others or just complements the information already provided, but Slippery Rock gained national recognition in 1936 because of a tongue-in-cheek piece by a writer (whose name I cannot find) that settled the debate of who was #1 between Pitt and Minnesota by saying that Slippery Rock was the best team because they beat this team, which beat that team, which beat that team....[several teams later]....which beat Minnesota.

Here is the story on the Slippery Rock website...

After that, newspapers across the country picked up the story and the Rock went viral. The tradition of US announcing their games began in the late 50's, but the Rock was a thing before then.

I own the Domino's Pizza in Slippery Rock, Pa. I have loved Michigan since I was a kid. I have been to A2 multiple times in my Domino's career. I have attended a game per year for the last 4 years (including UTL 2). Dave Brandon was CEO at Domino's. I have so many crazy connections between the schools...it is AWESOME!!
