A slimmer Brady Hoke

Submitted by GoWings2008 on
Don't know if anyone saw this, a quick MGoSearch revealed nothing, but Brady Hoke was invited as part of Tennessee's staff to Lane Kiffin's satellite camp in Boca Raton. Apparently he was difficult to recognize due to the weight loss... Link: https://mobile.twitter.com/RLenziCMG/status/871841398785548289/photo/1?… Good for him! Sounds like he's trying to make some changes in his life.

I always liked Hoke.  Happy to see him on his feet and doing what he loves.

There's a life lesson in Brady Hoke's trajectory -- not everyone is best served by climbing to the next level.  Some people are just really good at the "lower" positions.  And having good people in those positions is what makes the world go around.

By all accounts Hoke is an outstanding DL coach.  It'll be interesting to see how Tennessee's DL does.

I've heard about people being promotoed to mediocracy, where they excel at what they did originally getting promoted until they are at a job that they are only ok at.

I've shifted my mindset in the last two years. For a long time I've been trying to push to get promoted and move up the ladder. With kids now, and seeing what my manager and director go through, I'm ok with continuing being an engineer.  I still get to affect the company positively and get to do what I enjoy. Its really freeing when you realize being happy in your current position is ok.

Mattison and Don Brown both seem to have enjoyed long successful careers where they weren't the head coach.

was the right man for a job as big at Michigan. Clearly he was not the guy to work for Brandon or succeed RR.  At Ball St and SDSU, he was fine.  He has the "tools" for those kinds of jobs, IMO. He wasn't not great at those places, but neither was he bad. And in my mind, he's no different than dozens and dozens of other college coaches who aren't right for big time jobs, but many of whom continue to run programs to varying degrees of success and who are often forgettable.

Reality is the list of really good college football coaches is small, and the list of guys who could have come in after RR and worked for Brandon successfully ... man, that list is tiny.

Not having to go on as many recruiting home visitis probably is helping him a lot. I hope he does well, but I still hope Tennessee sucks. I can't root for Butch Jones.
