It's BS.
The league's policy states that no employer club may grant another club permission to discuss employment with its head coach for the current or a future season until the end of the season. The coach is prohibited from discussing employment with another team, and no club may request permission to discuss employment with a coach from another team.

Wouldn't that explain why a trade hasn't happened yet?
It was commonly accepted that the Raiders wouldn't trade for a one-year coach who would leave in a year. They would want to know that he was willing to sign up long term. However, if Oakland couldn't talk to Harbaugh until the end of the season, then doesn't that explain why there has been no trade? Also, wouldn't it make sense that SF would grant Oakland permission as soon as the game ends tomorrow? Oakland would then have until Tuesday to work a deal. if they come to terms, SF can work a trade and get draft picks or players. This nightmare scenario also jives with Rapport's tweet that Oakland will be meeting with Harbaugh this weekend. Sirius would still be wrong about the 49ers "have given" permission, but it is kind of close if they "will give" permission. Persumably, they would have to let Oakland know that they plan to grant permission so people can schedule meetings, etc.
Am I missing something here? Really, please tell me I am missing something.

I have never even been to the Bay Area, so I have zero knowledge of the rivalry. But, woiuld SF fans really rather have JH at Michigan than get Oakland's draft picks? Also, it seems contradictory to suppose that Baalke thinks Harabaugh is so bad he wants to get rid of him, but is worried that he is such a great coach he can turn around the Raiders. If Baalke doesn't like Harabugh it seems to me he would inflict him on the rival Raiders and pick up some draft picks as a bonus.
(I am a Lions fan so my frame of reference may be off here. There hasn't been a Lions coach in my lifetime that I wouldn't trade to Green Bay or Chicago for a draft pick. Caldwell is making a case though.)

The request and grant of permission can be done in about 15 minutes. A call to Harabaugh's agent, maybe another 30. Oakland will certainly have its offer ready to go. So, by Sunday night, Oakland could send an offer to Harbaugh. That leaves all of Monday and most of Tuesday to negotiate against Michigan's established offer. That is a ton of time.
You are right about the Rooney rule. The Lions got fined 200K for violating it when they hired Mariucci in 2003. The Raiders might just pay the fine, or interview someone on Sunday before hitting send on their offer. They could then argue that they complied.
My point is that there does seem to be a plausable scenario where it does not, in fact, happen. My hope is that Hackett is on top of this and has a functioning cell phone. Giving Harabaugh until Tuesday to sign (if the reoports are true) may turn out to be a huge mistake. I want to see Hackett close this deal. Until he does, I am not going to be celebrating anything.

Because Hackett is not an idiot and believes Harbaugh is coming based on their negotiations. If Harbaugh wants to talk to Oakland, he likely is not being honest with Hackett and Michigan reps. Is it that hard to understand?

Name one NFL team that will consider him a God? College kids will jump through walls for him and that's not something pro players will do. Big contract, complete autonomy, and being adored by the fanbase is what I call a solid deal.

Seems illogical from a SF POV. I am going to once again start my chant of "Its happening, It's happening . . .", (thank you coach schiano for the advice) blindly believing it as I finish my drink, take another pee, and go to bed. I know no one will take heed since worrying is just a UM fan's thing but you have to consider the circumstances here
- Brian has heard enough fire from a ton of directions to declare this done. Brian is very conservative relative to a lot of other places.
- There is enough confidence in AA that a lot of moving parts are aligning for "something big" to happen next Tuesday.
- Think about the human aspect. Jim is a human, not a cyborg. He has obviously made a decision that let what seems to be a very conservative man in Hackett who has run this thing in as hush hush of a manner as possible to start getting gears going for "something big" to happen next Tuesday. To think Jim would go back on that with days to go when mentally he has already made a decision to AA, told family members - namely his wife and dad - with 24-72 hrs to go would almost be ludicrous. Think about how that guy would be treating his school - all for what? For the right to go to a sad sack franchise?
If all these machinations for next week from so many people with so much smoke was not happening I'd get the worry. But basically Jim has closed the window. He will be ending his affiliation with the 49ers on Monday and if you believe the shitstorm of smoke within 14-18 hrs of that he will be on a plane flying cross country. So that would give any suitor oh 12 hrs Monday to change his mind. Again it is a human being here who from all accounts has "given his word" he is coming to AA from all the things happening in the background. To a place he loved and went to school at.
Jim is an asshole but not that sort of asshole. That would be like taking the Michigan football program out behind the barn and shooting it... in it's back.

And to take it a step further I fully believe there is a signed contract at this point. Brian mentioned that he doesn't have a picture of a contract, but I don't think he says those words and puts himself out there with 99% certainty unless there is something in writing. Even the athletic department seems to be too leaky at this point for it not to be a done deal. I think the rumor mill in A2 is in full effect because slowly more and more people who need to prepare for next week are being fed details - Hackett doesn't allow this to happen unless it's a done deal already.

Only a handful of people would have been in that room, so his information is still second or third hand right? Credible, but there is still a margin of error in that it could be false. But my guess is he has credible information that there is a written agreement and all of the circumstantial evidence bolsters that piece of information.
