Signing Day Recap / Drinking Thread

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

All in all, a great day!

A few notes:

  1. I have it confirmed that Weber was leaning to Michigan yesterday. OSU hit it hard last night and he woke up "50/50." Michigan got Higdon and he used that as his reason (or excuse - depending your point of view) to chose OSU. Since his announcement he has admitted that Higdon impacted his decision - not competition wise - but because he was told (according to him) that he would be the only back in Michigan's class. That is the reason he told Sam Webb that he basically felt lied to.

I personally call b/s and think he was just looking for a reason one way or another and jumped at the first shot to make an excuse for himself to select either school, but whatever.

Sidenote, I also confirmed that he wanted badly to end the recruiting cycle, then Harbaugh and Wheatley made such an impact, OSU lost Herman and he had no choice but to reconsider. He was nervous about flipping back and never really made a firm decision.

I could not confirm if he knew about Higdon before today like the rest of the world (hard to believe he didn't). No use in crying over spilled milk...moving on.

  2. Multiple reports have the UM staff regrouping and going HARD after Roquan Smith. I like our chances. He's had every opportunity to go to UGA and he hasn't. He lost his coach at UCLA and we're putting on the press. I'm certainly going to keep tabs on this one...it would be a HUGE "get" for us.

  3. As reported, Cole is starting at WR, Wheatley at TE, Washington at CB and Kinnel at FS. Andrew David was asked if he could compete at punter and Baxter basically replied that "I treat it like a relief pitching staff in baseball, I'm not opposed to having one guy for XPs, one for FGs, one for punting and one for KOs." His point was that the best player will play depending on the situation.

Anyway, what we drinking tonight?

Cheers to these guys!!!

Coke Zero.

Just put in all the rankings and class information into the recruiting history book. Took about 90 minutes.

Now I have to go through the whole SuperGuide and statistical record book and change "Tyrone Wheatley" to "Tyrone Wheatley, Sr.". Same goes for Jon Runyan. A long process.

I'm very happy with how the class turned out. This has been the most active signing day since I started following recruiting.

Think about this: today was the first time in 3 years that Michigan got a commitment on NSD. That was Norfleet in 2012.

I feel like Cole will be sneaky good next year. My complete random guess as to starting QB: I'm gonna say one of the freshman: no idea which tho.

Took my first sick day in two years today. Been chugging walgreen's brand fruit punch in bed while battling a cold and following the day's signings. I love those twitter pics of the recruits, although I doubt BCole, Gentry, Washington, Kinnel, and Perry will actually wear those numbers this year.

Super excited about the incoming class - Weber was a big loss (in terms of Urb's gain) but we have enough talent at RB and we surely will find a good one or two in 2016. We got another quality QB, DE, CB and TE - and all we need is JH and staff to coach them up.

Hoke and "his regime" have recruited well and those recruits are in their Jr. or even Sr. year - As long as the QBs become QBs I like our chance in the coming season and for years to come.

Cheers!

we did just fine recruiting, in fact, it fell only slightly short of perfection.   seems like a bunch of highly talented, high-character recruits.  a very good recipe for success.

would be a nice end to a succesful 1st crootin' campaign for Harbaugh and staff.  Excited to see how they will do with a full year to work the phones.

Drinking water.  The champagne will have to wait until Friday

I was drinking Baird/Ishii/Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA at a drinking establisment this evening. I enjoyed it so much that I came home and jammed a bunch of Lipton Earl Grey tea bags into a 40 of St. Ives. And I must say, that other than my creation tasting disgusting and nothing like the BISJGTIPA, it tasted just like the BISJGTIPA.

Anyone watching this Oregon vs Washington game? Bill Walton is the color commentator and the odd stuff he says is worth tuning in for. Games on espn2

for this thread. I normally can check the blog during the day, but for some reason today I was buried at work in back to back meetings and haven't been able to check until this evening to see who we landed. I agree with your thoughts on Weber. As for Weber and Clark, I'm moving on. The future at Michigan is still bright without them.

For anyone interested, heres a little article about UCLA and the Jim Ulbrich situation.

http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/02/04/uclas-jim-mora-hoping-to-keep…

Most notable quotes from the article:

"“I’m confident, I’m hopeful that we will be able to talk about some more players down the line,” Mora said."

"Mora also praised Ulbrich for being up-front with recruits and their parents about the recent developments."

Mr. Smith would beg to differ.

Don't get me wrong I'm very happy for the commitments that we did receive today. I've been following Michigan recruiting since 2002 and this is the weakest class we have had in the recruiting sites era. I certainly do not believe this will be the trend, but it is a reminder that national signing day just hasn't went well for Michigan as long as the recruiting sites have been around. Occasionally Michigan will get a big name player on national signing day or a commitment reaffirmed, but overall it's not a very promising day for Michigan. Let us not forget 3 years ago we struck out on five big-name players on NSD. So here's to having the greatest coach ever and hopefully the 2016 class and on will be filled before signing day happens in the future.

was ranked higher (around 20 by most) was due to the fact Hoke was able to ge 20 recruits but 13 of which were 3 stars. Plus, Hoke did not lose over half of RR recruits during the 2010 season, like Michigan under Hoke lost half their verbal commits through the 2014 season!

If Harbaugh can have a big turn around season this year, He will probably have the entire 2016 class filled with verbal commits before NSD!

I completely agree, I believe 2016 recruiting class is going to be an absolute beast. There's going to be over thirty scholarships available and if we can get early enrollees we can charge the scholarships to the 2015 class. I can see the next class being potentially one of the greatest classes michigan has ever had. That being said we need it because this is going to be such a big class it will be the foundation for our program.

Actually next year's class is going to be small as well - probably slightly bigger than this year - maybe as high as 20 (only 14 seniors next year) - unless we have a LOT of attrition. It is the next class (2017) that will be huge both because of the large size of Hoke's 2013 class (27-28) and probable early entry of Peppers and others? (Mone? Hurst?). In any case it cannot be larger than 28 per Big Ten rules --- 25 max plus up to 3 back-dated EEs as long as that doesn't raise the previous year's total over 25.

What you will see in 2016 is a big rise in "quality" compared to this year.  It seems that Costello and his top-50 receiver buddy are strong candidates for early commitments and hopefully the sentiment that M is now near a slam-dunk for R. Gary has merit.  Unless the product on the field really flops next year I would expect the M class to be number 1 (or very close to it) in average recruit ranking even if it isn't top 5 overall due to number of recruits.

Not far behind Weber in my opinion. I'm not too disappointed about Weber decision. Harris was the RB I really wanted but that ship sailed too far away before Harbaugh got here.  I really wanted Clark but he must of thought his chances to play and win faster would be with UCLA but he may end up being surprised after Harbaughs first season.

Nice to see some of you guys are the glass half full types.  I thought today was pretty disappointing.  We literally missed on all the top targets: Weber, Clark, Marshall, Jefferson.

The probability of missing on all those guys had to be pretty low, yet we still managed to do it.  Not to mention it looks like the staff had their chance with Weber and screwed it up.

I gotta disagree on the "screwed up" take. I mean if he didn't want us to take another rb all he had to do was say something before today and make a choice. The coaches can't be held hostage and then miss out on taking a rb at all when they clearly think they needed to get one. It's the old "bird in the hand" cliche. It would have been nice to get him but it would have been worse if we were just left holding the bag.

I think we could have gambled with not taking a RB in this class.  That is actually a position of depth right now.  Should have gone all-in on Weber and tried to secure his LOI first, then if he says no go to your second option or just scrap the position.  Under no circumstances should they have let Higdon sign first.

Marshall!  I'm most disappointed in Clark going to UCLA. He was once so enthused about Michigan under Hoke. I thought for sure having JH, who develops TE, would get him to commit. I thought Jefferson would commit since Miss St. is so loaded at the WR spot. IMO, Weber is not even close to Harris! I wish we had a chance of getting Harris back. It would be great to get Smith!

Mr. Mangina, After reviewing your posting history, it is very clear to me that you are an OSU fan posing as a Michigan fan.  You signed up the week of The Game, and your posts include the following:

"Coaches dropped the ball on this one."

On OSU oversigning:  "That's only 4 over right now.  And you know some players will transfer in the offseason, leave, get kicked off the team, etc. Not to mention I'm sure they will have some decommits tomorrow."

On Dashoin Neal: "Story getting picked up by major news outlets. Time for damage control. Duck and cover."

On Mike Weber fake magazine cover: "Pretty sure OSU said they didn't make that. Probably some fan."

On Harbaugh: "Harbaugh was 1-3 against Oregon, so not really sure what you're talking about."

On Damien Harris: "Once OSU took Webb, he was not going there."

Some other gems:

"If we don't get a quality coaching hire, the last decade vs OSU may actually look favorable compared to what's coming."

"Rooting against OSU makes us look like little brother."

"So did Oregon have a week in November/December while OSU was in school?  Seems like this should even out on the front end."

"Half the people on this board are starting to act like Sparty fans with their "omg!!! what great exposure!!!" comments.  "Won't OSU and MSU fans be mayaaaaaaad." Pretty sure OSU fans don't give a flying fuck seeing as they're actually playing in the championship."

"This doesn't really seem like Harbaugh's cup of tea so I'm surprised he's doing it.  He doesn't really have a great media personality."

"Not sure what the fascination is with "Ohio" recruits.  OSU pretty much picks the cream every year and then leaves schools like Kentucky, Purdue, Indiana, and Sparty to pick over the scraps."

"Can some of us please stop acting like Spartoons and realize when we celebrate crap like this it makes us look weak?"

"Jebus, that crowd behind the ESPN set is like 95% Bucknuts."

"You guys are nuts if you think OSU will get left out after beating a top 10 Wisconsin."

"If OSU manages to beat a likely top 10 Wisconsin next week, they should go."

"I don't know why people keep parroting this "weak schedule" argument against OSU.  If OSU wins this weekend, they would have beaten 9 bowl eligible teams."

"And I personally think OSU has a better resume than both TCU and Baylor with a Wisconsin win."

"OSU beating a #13 Wisconsin is a hell of a lot more impressive than beating a 2-10 Iowa State. "

"To be perfectly honest, I don't think Harbaugh loves Michigan as much as some think....at least not now anyway.  I think it started after he was passed over for the QB coaching job.  And with his ego, I think he took it personally."

Basically, every single post of yours is either a veiled criticism of Michigan or a subtle compliment to OSU.  You are a troll. I don't know what makes your life so pathetic that you feel the need to pose as a Michigan fan on this site, but at least the mods will hopefully take care of you in short order.

Yeah, I will say first that a username of "Jolly Mangina" wasn't an encouraging start, but his posting history is pretty troll-heavy, and as in 10 weeks he's contributed almost nothing of note other than many of the gems quoted above, I did send the Mangina to Bolivia, where he will certainly be well taken care of by the populace, I am sure.

As a general note, if several posts above and below this one no longer make sense, that's what caving typically does to threads. Apologies for that.

I'm only concerned with the Weber saga, if it actually did upset Wilcher... heard he made a comment on the radio that Harbaugh may have lied or misled Weber and clearly that wouldn't sit well with the program for the sake of future recruits. I'd like to know the full story there...
