Sierra Romero Appreciation Thread

Submitted by Gucci Mane on
We are lucky to have a Softball team full of amazing talent, but Sierra Romero is on another level. We all know she is great, but how great is she ? She holds the records at Michigan for; batting average, slugging percentage, home runs, RBI, walks, and runs. That is all as a junior ! Can't wait to see Sierra and the other girls win uofm another national championship !

to watch her play. She's the only reason I started watching this season. She's amazing and she definitely looks good in maize and blue!

"I remember her Freshman year when she came in and broke the single season HR record like it was nothing. Was amazing. "

This right here touches on part of why the Sierra Romero experience has been so special.  We knew before that year was even over that she would be in the thick of the conversation for the greatest player in school history.  If she'd been a men's b-ball or football player, she'd have been gone in a year or two, tops.  While I wish all our early departures well, and don't hold it against them in the slightest, there's a reason a lot of fans are more attached to Novak than Burke or Stauskas - we got to know him in a way we didn't with the mega-stars.

With Romero, though, because of the nature of softball, we knew from the get-go that she'd be around for four full years.  We knew she wouldn't just break single-season records, but career records, NCAA records.  We've gotten to know her over the years, see her mature from a freshman phenom to a great leader on a great team.  She's an unforgettable athlete, we've known it all along, and that has made following her a unique & amazing experience.

She is one of the best hitters I've seen.  Period.  Baseball, softball, whatever.  She has the extremely rare combination of a high level of confidence and amazing mechanics.  Like some other phenomenal hitters, she seems to slow the game down.  That HR yesterday is a great example.  Right on the inside black and she recognized it, got her hands in and barrelled up a very tough pitch and took it out.  When she hit it I thought, "wow, how did she get to that" then the frigging thing went out.  She's a stud.  May not see anyone like her again. (Although obviously hopefully we do...)  Enjoy watching every one of her ABs.

You recruit Southern California, Sierra is a stud and am so glad she is a Wolverine. I hope the coach continues to recruit the Inland Empire, SGV and Orange County as there are tons of girls here that will go to Michigan if given the opportunity

Same is baseball and I hope they get out here more in the IE as there is tons of talent who go play D3 and community college here because there is so much talent. Recruit Cali for Softball and Baseball and we will be regulars on the World Series circuit.

That is all

Thank you for not saying "RBIs," Gucci Mane. It is RBI and will always be RBI. The people who disagree have a problem with the long-established rules of English.

where they are without Romero, but she needed to be more assertive tonight. Could have scored the tying run and she threw to first on that one ground ball when the throw should have gone to second base (although it didn't cost the team).

Time for the team to step up now and win two and hopefully Wagner is on the rubber next game.

Go Bleu.

Still love Romo.  I would've liked to see her break for home, but I love how a bunch of people watching on their couches think they can read a play better than one of the best to ever don the Maize & Blue.  It was a bang-bang play, and if Sweet or Monte gets a hit, we never talk about this again.  Win as a team, lose as a team.

still love her, but that was awful. She knows it, Hutch knows it, I know it, and I suspect you damn well know it.

You take a few steps toward home on contact (if it's not go on contact).

If you bait a throw behind you, you're looking at bases loaded, at worst, and a throw bouncing around in the outfield, at best.

So now you've got those steps and the start of your momentum going toward home.

The MOMENT you see that girl start to turn her back on you, you're fucking gone. You're already a few steps off the bag, you've got the start of your momentum toward home, physics says you're fucking scoring. You have momentum toward home, the girl has her momentum going toward the outfield, and you've already started to make your way down the line.

There are no ifs ands or buts.

I don't care how great she is, she messed up last night. Her teammates are backing her up and when she doesn't run in a must-run situation no matter its outcome, she changes the stakes of a seasonlong bid for greatness that she and her teammates have fought to hard to achieve. Instinct should have sent her home not fear that if she gets thrown out  her team might not win. They didn't tie because she didn't go and so her teammates couldn't help win a game they had in their grasp with a single burst to the plate.

When you are compared to greatness, you have to respond like the greats do. I've seen Mays, Jeter and others make baserunnng mistakes being too aggressive. Sunday, Romero helped engineer a double steal that helped seal a victory leading to last night's opener. Not sure why Romero's thinking changed, except she was fearful of being out at home.

Florida was playing for the tie because it hit last. Michigan had to tie to force the game and got the hard hit ball that should have led to the tying run. You have to go in that spot. You can't wait. Patience is waiting for Godot when its winning time. You must act. Romero is a great player but she made a bad mental error last night.

Hutch was telling her to try to score, but Romero's mind was apparently somewhere else and she just had a brainfart. It happens to everyone, but Romero was unfortunate to have one at a very inopportune time. The only thing I really fault her for is wearing too much eye black.

Watching that play was excruciating.  I thought, well, at least we got the run in, then to see her still on third made my heart sink.  Having said all that, I could not have more respect for Romo and the women on this team.  Romo has that look in her eye like she's about to take over the next two games, and this team has more composure and character than any fielded by RR and Hoke.  If there's any team that can come back and win the next two, especially with Hutch at the helm, it's this one.  Bring it.

Sierra has been a great captain and leader this season. She is all about the team. She does not care about individual accolades. I'm sure what happened yesterday hurts no one worse than it hurts Sierra.
