SIAP: Some new jersey numbers

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Didn't see this posted, but when watching warmups Saturday I noticed a bunch of new numbers. Some of them you saw on the field.

  • Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. from #8 to #17
  • Alex Malzone from #12 to #10
  • Nick Eubanks from #1 to #18
  • Josh Metellus from #23 to #13

There are still some conflicts that will probably be confronted later on.

Dwumfour and Onwenu both wear #50. I have a hard time believing that will last much longer now that they're both playing.

Wheatley going to #17 is interesting because there are now FOUR at #17 including Ronald Johnson.

I guess that there are no situations where we need to play two nose tackles and neither is suited (at least right now) for 3 Tech.  If they start practicing sets with both of them on the D Line, one will get a new number.  I doubt we'll see both of them on special teams ...

Still not ideal. It's very rare for there to be two of the same number within a position group (hell, same side of the ball even), just in case. Onwenu playing both OL and DL complicates things, but I'm guessing one of them switches before too long. Onwenu's worn other numbers before, so I'm guessing he's not married to #50, he's worn #62 before and that's open.

(From a fellow old timer)...

If only there was some sort of magical device that could display the team roster, including numbers, on a television screen-like device. And I know I'm getting crazy here, but man - if there was some way to PRINT the words displayed on the tv-like thing. Oh my, how much would that improve our lives?

And if that scenario is too outlandish, maybe there's a cottage industry in printing and selling magazines on game day that includes the roster. . It would be glorious.

they used to hand out near the gates at The Big House. Though I have always bought the Official Program, those freebies were so much more handy for roster #s. And I always enjoyed their articles, especially Punt/CounterPunt, which featured occasional MGoStaffer-writer Nick Rou〽el.

Another interesting thing ... Lewis and Peppers have their numbers solo. Likely means both guys are going to play all over the place ... Defense, Returns, and secret-weapon time on Offense.

Yeah, but I expect Peters to compete for the spot next year still. Not saying there's even a decent chance of him starting, but he will still get a shot. Depends mostly on how Speight does this season as Peters has the highest upside of all the current QB's. If Speight hits his ceiling, it would be hard to trade off that game experience. Harbaugh will always play his best QB regardless. Same as any other position.

The numbering rules are - at least in my own opinion - easy enough to follow. As long as they are all 1 through 99 and there are not two players with the same number on the same side on the same down, or as long as there are not two player with the same number playing the same position in the same game, it's all good. I think the rules more or less keep the practical limit to two players with a given number anyway, although it is not hard to imagine three - the gymanstics of keeping them out of trouble with Section 4 of the rulebook might be interesting perhaps.

I think the way it works is the guy who wears the number gets to wear the number, the other guy who wore the number gets to take the number and multiply it by the square root of the nearest available number.  If he guesses the correct number, he wears 17.  If he guesses an incorrect number he'll wear 17.  18 if he can remember Freddie Footwork.
