This kid was a Rivals 4-star, top 200 (165) pro-style QB coming out of high school. Maybe he just didn't fit in with the spread offense and could be a legit player in a more conventional offense.

Either way, I don't see this happening, regardless of the log jam we'll have at QB in the next couple years. Best of luck to him.

I also do not think this has much of a chance of happening, but Rodrigues is somebody who comes with some character concerns. Frankly, I would prefer that it not happen. I hope he goes elsewhere.

As for whether we need more quarterbacks, I think there's a good chance that Bellomy does not return in 2015. So that leaves us with the relatively unproven Shane Morris, the completely unproven Wilton Speight, and the current high schooler Alex Malzone. I do think some more competition at QB would be helpful, though not necessarily in the form of Jake Rodrigues.

I would think the coaches could evaluate any potential character issues. But I don't want to see another season like 2008 when Nick Sheridan is starting or even 2012 when Bellomy has to go in against Nebraska. The more the merrier.

This makes me nervous because now I'm wondering it Coach Nuss doesn't really like what he is seeing from the current QB's on the roster.  I hope that isn't the case but I don't see why we would reach out to this kid.

As mentioned above, we would be fairly short on quarterbacks by the time Rodrigues would be eligible. Having just three scholarship quarterbacks on your roster is not a good situation. If Bellomy is buried on the depth chart after this year (which I expect him to be), then I don't think he returns in 2015.

Schools generally like to take one QB per year, and Michigan failed to do so in 2012. Combine that with losing your 2011 QB a year early (due to transfer/graduation/ineffectiveness), and you've gone from having 1 quarterback in each class to having .6 quarterbacks per class.

Anyone know if Nuss recruited this kid while he was still at Washington? Also, I saw character issues mentioned... Any actual details, or just rumors?

Washington offered him a scholarship and since Nussmeier was the OC/QB Coach (2009-11) there during the time he was recruited (he was a 2012 signee) I would assume that he was involved if not the primary recruiter.

Also, he was recruited and offered by Michigan and by SDSU so Hoke should be familiar with him. I couldn't find any character issues mentioned - most comments I read from Oregon posters were sympathetic about him wanting to get playing time. It sounds like he may have come to Oregon with injuries that set him back.

Well, at least UM is considering this way (transfers) to get players. JUCO next, maybe?

I looked at his size online and was surprised to see him at 6'3'. That doesn't sound like the typical size of an Oregon QB lately.

If the scholarships can bear the burden (which they can, we didn't take a QB in '12) then I don't see why this could be a bad idea for anyone but Rodriguez. More competition is always better and I have yet to see anything to substantiate claims of "character issues."

After Gardner graduates there is a big unknown.  His groomed replacement made his stars on the summer circuit.  Shane Morris is the equivalent of the guy with the real deep voice who wants to go into radio.  He may be good he may not.  Compare to Gardner who in HS carried a team on his back.  So his heroics in college is not unexpected.

None of us are in a postion to know how good Morris is because he has not played a meaningful game since his Junior Year in HS.  The bowl game was a farse of a plan.  It may be our new Ocoordinator does not like what he see's.  Impossible for us to know and we can only speculate.

I don't really understand this line of thinking. No, Morris isn't proven, but saying he "hasn't played in a meaningful game" can be said about lots and lots of players. I mean, he can't really play in a meaningful game until AFTER he earns the starting job or until the starter gets injured. We *can* evaluate his in-game performances and get a reasonable grasp on what he can do before he plays in the only games that matter (which are Ohio State and Michigan State, apparently).
