SIAP: Possible QB Grad Student Transfer

Submitted by umbig11 on

The Iowa Rivals board has started a thread about Jake Rudock transferring and one of the possible destinations is to Michigan. Chris Balas from The Wolverine heard it from the Iowa mod Tom Kakert a couple of days ago. Balas does not believe it will happen, but who knows? Rudock played at St Thomas Aquinas, same as John O'Korn our Houston transfer. So, there is that odd connection as well. Rudock's stats are better than Devin Gardner's.

Jake was 231-345, 61%, 5 picks, 16 TD's, 203 Yds/ppg (12), 2436 Tot yds and an eff rating of 133.5

Devin was 174-283, 61%, 15 picks, 10 TD's, 167 Yds/ppg (12), 1896 Tot yds, and an eff rating of 118.8

From what I saw of Iowa they were pretty conservative. Would Rudock be a good fit under Jim Harbaugh? Would he be an upgrade from what we have coming back?

All speculation at this point, but it is circulating.

It's rather unclear. I believe we are actually at 86 (26+19+26+15) at this moment.

But in September Hoke spoke rather confidently about 3 players (implied they were linemen of the offensive variety) meeting the ends of their career, and the public is yet to learn their names. So it is conceivable that we still have 2 spots remaining at the moment to either give a walk-on or a transfer. We'll see.

As long as he is at 85 in the fall it doesn't matter. There is always attrition during coaching transitions. If he starts to look like Urban Meyer or Nick Saban in a few years maybe they will. However, I don't think this type of thing is even close to SEC or Urban tactics.

I think that even urban's tactics aren't close to the level of SEC tactics, either.  There's plenty of things to criticize urban about, but I think he's generally in the ballpark WRT his numbers for the upcoming season.  With a normal level of attrition, he's right where Michigan is if we get the two transfers mentioned.

ask players to leave the program on a regular basis in years 2-5 I will agree with you. Right now, I don't see the comparison. JH has wiggle room with walk-on scholarships, 5th year players, and attrition. Let's wait a year or so.

I hate to link to the OSU page, but they should have a hard time arguing with it at least. Reeves had one tackle. The other player's name slips my mind, but I know he was listed in the participation report. I guess I can't say for certain they played "significant" time, but if Reeves really has post concussion syndrome, any time is dangerous.

That list included 3 walkons and a transfer that's not official yet, only rumored. If you're comparing apples to apples, we're at 82 now. OSU is/was way over 85. You're right that they'll get to 85 by fall because they absolutely have to. It's a rule you simply can't break.

How they will get there is unknown to us. Maybe it's already known to them and will be completely legitimate. Maybe.

We're only looking for attrition to clear room for walkons. That's how walkons get their scholarships every single year. If we were in the 90s, you'd have a point. But we've never been anywhere close to OSU's situation under any coach.

Going after Urban for over-signing is a non-starter.  He is shady about other things, but not over-signing. I recall Brian saying we should have played Florida instead of Alabama in Jerry world because it was more fair as Florida did not have a history of over signing.

Or were they were fine with it, but Meyer was opposed?

One of the (speculative) reasons given for Meyer leaving Florida was that he was didn't like being at a disadvantage with those SEC teams that oversigned. Coming to OSU, he wouldn't have to worry about the administration holding him back in comparison to Big Ten rivals. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I don't have an issue with it when you're falling into the 86-88 category. Usually teams can expect at least 3 guys to leave during any offseason. The issue becomes when you are having 95 scholarship players. It is very unlikely that you are going to lose 10 guys by ethical means.

We need to have 85 scholarships by fall practice. We are currently at 85. Assuming Lyons is announced soon, that's 86 and Rudock would make 87.

That means two players would have to leave by fall practice. Honestly, I would be shocked if two didn't, just through natural attrition.

I don't think what you're doing is wrong. I think it's funny that when OSU sits at 88 they get killed and if Michigan gets to 87 (which this thread seems in favor of) it's all ok. "Gotta plan for attrition!" Excuses are excuses. If you add this kid you're gambling (hoping?) on two people leaving. That's just a fact. Can't we just call a spade a spade?!

Look, you're managing your roster in a smart way. Planning for attrition is not a crime.

I guess we are saying the same thing. We are not currently over 85. Chances are, several players leave before we get any grad trasfers, so we should never be over 85. Whether you want to call what OSU does "oversigning" or not, they have more than 85 scholarships committed right now. We do not. That is my point.

GoWings2008

but although you do have a point, especially since osu just won a National Championship, the reasons players leave one program or another vary greatly.  Regardless of the ring, a kid may have not gotten the playing time, nor expecting to in the near future, due to depth chart issues or a very talented incoming freshman, etc.  Not to mention, there usually tends to be family issues, or the odd "got in trouble with the law" issues...something that I'm sure urban is familiar with.

So, I can totally see his point, there's other things going on with them vs Michigan, but the how isn't as important as the bottom line to us, and that (if we want to be totally fair) isn't quite sitting right with me either.

Ace wrote a post to explicitly says OSU isn't oversigning. Brian wrote in another post that OSU isn't oversigning. I mentioned in two posts and on several Michigan and Ohio State boards that Ohio State isn't oversigning.

Under exactly what definition of "get killed" do you include all of the site's full-timers going out of our way to exonerate Ohio State and tell our readership to bark up some other tree?

I like it when we get opposing perspectives on here, but you keep turning up in these threads in full battle armor, looking to fight anyone who shows up on a battlefield that was not only immediately conceded, but which Michigan fans are helping you defend.

Obviously there are going to be Wolverines who expect the worst when it's Ohio State, because Michigan-Ohio State. I bet it would take me less than 35 seconds to find a Buckeye fan on your site or 11W who equates what Urban did to Weber with signing O'Korn. But if the guys who run the site already said that's stupid why would it help for me to go on and tell them so?

SUCK IT OSU FAN THAT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT! YOU JUST GOT TOLD!

GET ON THE BUS...SETH IS TAKING YOU TO SCHOOL!

...in all seriousness, STFU, don't use a couple posters to generalize for the entire fanbase and come to a MICHIGAN board to bitch about it.

If Michigan fans want to complain about OSU fans on Bucknuts or whatever your site is called...ROAST THEM. But don't come over here talking that nonsense - especially when mods have all had front page posts agreeing with the thing you're complaining about. I can also find multiple posters like myself who agree with your opinion (and Seth's...and Brian's...and Ace's) that OSU isn't/wasn't oversigning...for every person on MGoBlog you can find bitching about something their rival has done. How do you think it would go if I went over to your board, took the most idiotic posts and/or opinions on your board and then complained about it...on your board?

Ok, you're right and I agree with you! I remember commenting on Ace's post with compliments.

In this case, I made a clear joke about oversigning (complete with 1s instead of !s) and got replied to over it. So I replied to the replies.

My points on oversigning were supposed to die two weeks ago on NSD. This was not an attempt to start the same oversigning debate I already had on this board. It was an attempt to make a sarcastic joke. Because sarcasm is fun.

For the record, I don't like the 11W comment section. I barely participate in it. It's a tire fire. I enjoy the articles.
