SIAP - Magnuson comments at The Opening

Searched but didn't see this anywhere else on the board. Erik Magnuson made a few comments regarding his commitment, and his recruiting of other West Coast players.

No worries
Erik Magnuson isn't concerned about the commitment he made to Michigan last month just because the Wolverines have a new coach -- Brady Hoke.

"The big thing is the coaches," the offensive lineman from Carlsbad (Calif.) La Costa Canyon said. "I knew the coaches for awhile at San Diego State. I've known them for awhile and saw what they could do there. I have confidence in them and I think they're going in the right direction."

Now, he's ready to help.

Magnuson, who is the No. 24 offensive tackle in the nation, is starting by recruiting fellow linemen. His main targets are Zach Banner, the 6-8, 335-pound tackle from Washington, and Kyle Murphy, the 6-7, 270-pound tackle from California. Magnuson said he would focus on the two four-star prospects this week at The Opening.

Nothing earth-shattering, but I like this kid more and more each day.

I read this last night as well.  Always good to have a big time recruit trying to pull kids here.  My only worry is that the class will fill up before Banner decides.  I believe he was the one who stated he is going to announce later on regardless of whether a specific class is filling up.

I think Kalis and Diamond will commit and wrap up the OL spots before Banner/Garnett get a chance to visit. As for Murphy that kid is left coast all the way.

There was also an article on Rivals about Garnett and Banner potentially wanting to play together.  Package deals rarely work out and they haven't even said they're a package deal, but a combo of Garnett/Banner is preferable to me.

Magnus, I have seen Garnett listed as a G on most sites, but recently I have also heard that T would be his position.  Do you think he could play either?  I only ask because if we do get Kalis (who seems destined to be a guard), we will have a lot of interior players and might need some people to switch to tackle.

If Kalis drags it out (which I don't think he will), we would then focus our attention on the 2 WA guys.  I think Diamond will eventually commit probably late summer/early fall.

If Kalis commits soon, it will be interesting to see who gets that last spot.  Diamond seems to be the logical choice, but it has been noted that his coaches are all about delaying a decision as long as possible to increase exposure for teammates and their school.  If Diamond waits until, say November or December, that gives Garnett and Banner time to visit on officials.  Not that there is a bad choice here out of the three, but Garnett and Banner seem to be consistently higher on recruiting sites as well as some Mgomembers lists.

I'm ecstastic, thrilled, giddy to be in our current recruiting situation.   Our OL class is already solid.   We're in the mix for at least 3-4 blue-chip OL recruits to round out the OL class.   And guys like Magnuson recruiting hard to reel in future teammates only helps.   Even if the worst-case scenario happens (a verbal decommits before signing day), we're still seem to be in a great position.  I just can't remember a year like this in a *long* time w/ such a positive recruiting buzz surrounding our program at such an early stage in the recruiting cycle.

magnuson is a 6-5, 275 lb tackle, these guys are a 6-8, 335-pound tackle and a 6-7, 270-pound tackle. so this would be 3 tackles, each one huge. we already have Braden verballed and there is talk of TE AJ williams sliding over to tackle.  this is a stretch, but lets just say all five of these guys end up at UM, would this mean that one of these guys is switching to guard? they all seem a bit lanky for guard. even at guard, stacey and bars are signed up. its not that i don't want them or don't trust the coaching staff or magnuson, but if anyone has an idea on what the strategy here is regarding how many lineman to take.

Yeah, people are on this Williams-to-OT kick, but I have no idea what it's based on.  He's a good sized kid, but by all accounts too small to play OT for a while.  Even if he gets up to 275, I bet he still plays TE.  Think about him blocking next to a 320 pounder like Braden.

comes from Hello: AJ Williams

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCEAs I started writing this post, I was dead set on the idea that this guy is a high school tight end who becomes an offensive lineman in college. I'm still leaning that way, but now I'm not quite as sure. He's a de facto third tackle in high school, so it wouldn't be that much of a change for him (especially if, as noted above, he simply plays on the line this year). However, he also has pretty good athleticism, and while that trait isn't "wasted" by putting him on the line, it's definitely one less weapon you have.

At the end of the day, I'm going to predict he ends up as a 6-6 (or even taller, as he's only a high school junior right now) 315 offensive lineman, capable of playing pretty much any position along the line until the coaches give him a bit of specialization. Like every offensive lineman, he will spend a year redshirting to bulk up and start learning the system.

i know these aren't gospel, but this might be where this comes from.

so looking at some past Hello:s, braden might be a guard or a tackle and is not rated as highly as magnuson, but is taking 3 tackles in one class unusual? are 3 highly rated tackles even likely to commit together?

they only list OLs, not Ts, Gs or Cs, so grains of salt necessary, but from '02 to '12, UM took the following numbers of OLs: 4, 4, 5 (including alan branch), 6, 3, 2, 5, 2, 1, 2, 4 (this class).  so bottom line: taking 6 OLs (if we assume the above 2 sign, which is a huge assumption) would be the most OLs that UM has taken in a decade, which switching schemes, etc is justified.

by all means, proceed coaches, my concerns have been proven invalid.

That last 2 should technically be a 3, since I'm guessing Jack Miller was left out since he was listed as a DE on Rivals. Then again he is probably going to play C and not G, and since the 1 we took the year before was a C (Pace, who probably could play G but seemed to have big upside at C) listing it as 2 isn't really that incorrect. Seeing the previous 4 years to that 2-1-3 stretch, it's interesting to see small classes of 2 and 3 being followed or preceded by large classes of 5 or 6. 2010...not so much.

While Drew did a hell of a good job recruiting others to his class.  He managed to keep apx 3 years worth of qb classes all to himself.  Magnus is going out and recruiting highly qualified cantidates to his own approximate position...Freaking bully for him.

We're gonna play with toughness, we're gonna be responsible and we're gonna play with toughness.  This is Michigan.

I would believe that Murphy is a longer shot then Banner, but if Magnuson pulled off this miralce and got both to commit to Michigan before Kalis and Diamond committed, how would that affect Kalis' and Diamond's commits?  I would think more then anything that they may look at other schools, but if they still wanted to commit to Michigan would Coach Hoke take them giving that it would put the OL class at 8 players?

We would almost certainly hold a place for Kalis no matter what, unless it was between him and Garnett, in which case, good problem. If Diamond waits and Banner or Murphy commit, I don't think we'd take Diamond until we heard from our other guys.

With the talent we have at other spots, I don't see us taking more than 6 OL unless we get Kalis and Diamond and then someone like Garnett or Peat want onboard. That might be it though.

I'm with you. I'd be stunned if we took more then 6 OL. I'm also not sure where Diamond stands in the coaches eyes. I have to believe they'll wait on Kalis. He's one of the best OL on our board, he could play guard which a lot of our commits might be to big for and it's a huge blow to OSU. Diamond on the other hand I don't know. If he waits and Banner or Garnett or Bisnowaty wants in then I could very easily see the coaches saying no to Diamond.
