SIAP: Andy Staples on CFB Recruiting (with a sympathetic focus on Harbaugh)

Submitted by FauxMo on

Sorry if this was already posted (though I could not find it), but here is an article from Andy Staples of SI on CFB recruiting. Naturally a lot of focus on Harbaugh, but hardly any of it negative. I think it also reveals how silly the system overall is...

P.S. If this was already posted, please feel free to downvote me until I can no longer see straight.

why do posters on mgoblog need to be so apologetic? who cares if something has already been posted? why must someone overtly declare sarcasm? or even when something is off topic... isn't it obvious when something is off topic? just funny how everyone is afraid of the snarky and vitriolic reaction to lack of mgoetiquette

I totally agree. If you search the site and didn't find anything, just post it. If it was posted and someone points it out, then you can edit the OP and apologize if you want.

And what is with people telling the mods they can feel free to delete things? If the mods want to delete something, they will delete it. They do not need your permission to do so.

It's really a by-product of the site being the destination for a fair portion of the highly engaged, admittedly somewhat obsessive portion of the fanbase. With that comes a very deep knowledge of just about anything and everything Michigan, but also a very long memory when it comes to what has been posted in the recent past - in some cases, in the distant past. We're safe on this one, of course, and really, in what might be the most thread-dense recruiting cycle on the oard ever thanks to Jim Harbaugh, it probably would have been missed by myself and the other mods too.

Thanks for posting. It was actually well written, something I don't expect from online or print journalism anymore. I like the proposal of eliminating signing day altogether rather than making an early signing period.

Anyone who followed Harbaugh's recruiting during his tenure at Stanford knows the coach's preferred strategy is to carpet-bomb players with scholarship offers early in the process and winnow his class all the way up to National Signing Day. At Stanford, this was somewhat of a necessity because coaches didn't usually learn which of their recruits would be admitted to the school until relatively late in the process. That issue is not as pressing at Michigan, but the strategy helped Harbaugh dramatically improve the Cardinal program in a relatively short time, so it makes sense that he would continue to use it with the Wolverines.

Does a nice job explaining Harbaugh's recruiting philosophy at Stanford. It might not be necessary to do this down the road, but it makes sense if we want a quick turnaround.

I truly find it amazing that so many are having a hard time grasping the concept of players earning there way into a Michigan scholarship by demonstrating they meet requirement through their senior year. Why is this thought to be so novel? And why is it thought to be so unique that Harbaugh offers enough players early in the process so that enough qualify at the end to fill a class?

If this has never been done, and nobody else is doing this, we should easily end up with the number 1 class every year.
