Should We Buckle Up this weekend?

Submitted by wresler120 on

Patrick Kugler will be taking his official visit this weekend, and it just so happens Cameron Hunt is also taking his official visit this weekend. I know a lot of people really like our chances of landing Cameron Hunt, including Tom VanHaaren. Cameron Hunt is a current Cal commit, but he seems to be really high on Michigan. That would give us 6 OL commit, all who played in All American games this year. Ohio State is in hot pursuit of Cameron Hunt as well, but I'm hoping the visit with Patrick Kugler in his ear sways him to go with the good guys this weekend.

He did play Strong Safety in high school, but with his skills he could also be a good fit as a boundary corner. I know the Safety spots are theoretically interchangeable in Mattisons scheme, and I'm certainly no expert, but it would seem that D Thomas is better suited to play SS, and see the field earlier that way with Jarrod Wilson already at FS. Hill could be a decent physical Boundary corner in run support, with Stribling either at the boundary too, or possibly at FS with his great play reading and ball hawking skills. Another way of putting it is of all the DBs in this class, I would pick Stribling as the best FS candidate.

That would be a great haul. Gotta believe they smooth things over past the only taking 5 comments if lewan leaves. I get it freshman take a while to come along. But a bench full of 4* is never a bad thing.

But if it turns out to be accurate, then is it really outdated?  I mean, we spend a lot of time on this board praising our coaches for their consistency and honesty with recruits throughout the entire process.  Perhaps this is a prime example of the veracity of that notion.

I like to entertain myself by thinking that instead of this 6th OL for 2013 being the coaches' reaction to Lewan's departure to the NFL, as some have speculated, it's their reaction to the realization that at least one of the 2012 OL is so damned good (say Kalis for example), that he'll be gone to the NFL after the 2014 season.

I have three family members that were seriously injured in a message board related incident.  There was a guy who was drinking and posting and wasn't paying any attention (or couldn't) and he ended up causing quite the scene.  Fortunately everyone healed and are back to 100%.

From twitter, in real person (non-twitter) speak:

Da'shawn Hand: "My top 5 is: Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Tech."

"OSU is #6"

"But I'm sticking with my top 5".

Not really sure what the last two lines are meaning, whether he is only looking at 5 teams now, or if someone said something and he said he OSU is close but he's keeping his top 5 the same or what have you. But that's what I have from the twitters.

I know this topic is about Hunt, but Green also said that he was going to commit in "early" January and when he commits he is a "man of his word."  I would not be surprised to see a couple commits by this time next week.  GO BLUE!

Seems like we have a good shot at landing him. Though, Oregon is also in his top-three and I think them retaining Chip could hurt our chances a little.

I like Reon Dawson, but i'm not sure he's needed in this class now. Delano Hill likely filled the need at that position. Plus we're able to take 4-5 more DBs next year. No real need to try and flip him from his Illinois commitment.

Hunt on the other hand can fit in this class easily because his technique and athleticism lets him project anywhere from Center to Tackle. They'll all redshirt anyways and he can sub across the line, or even push the starters. Flipping him from Cal would make more sense for him, and us. Plus Michigan better fits the type of education he was looking for.

Outside of TE's we've got 5 behind Gallon and Dileo, but we could use some kind of deep threat, unless Amara Darbohs 4.42 proves to be legit like we all hope. Chesson was pretty raw, but reportedly had some speed, too. Jaron Dukes could end up developing into our best downfield threat, but all these kids are still untested projects, so we don't even really know what we have yet. It'd be nice if a guy or 2 could stretch the field, as opposed to just having TE's and a stable of freakishly tall possession types.

Chesson has more than some speed - he's probably the fastest receiver we've had since...Carl Tabb?  I'm not sure yet how good of a WR he'll actually be, but speed won't be the issue.

And I'm 100% sure Darboh doesn't run a 4.42, but if he's a legit 4.6 that would be awesome for a guy his size.

Yeah Chesson is quite the track star, and should be able to run with more than just a quick burst. I don't think Darboh actually pulled a 4.42 either, but I'm sure at Florida they'd credit him with a 4.3 and put it on their wall of fame, lol. Not as fast as Jourdan Lewis, but still should be fast enough with his height.

Yeah - a lot of schools like to inflate (or deflate?) their players' 40 times, which affects how fans view what a "good" 40 time is.  For example, Florida speedsters Chris Rainey and Percy Harvin ran a 4.45 and 4.41, respectively, at the NFL combine.  Don't get me wrong, those are very fast times, and those are two of the faster players in the NFL.  Torrey Smith ran a 4.43 and Randall Cobb ran a 4.46 a couple years ago, and we know how fast those guys are.  Over the last 7 years, a total of 9 RBs have run sub-4.4 40s at the combine.  And this is all after these guys train like mad for this event.  In the same period, not a single LB ran under 4.4 (one guy, Jon Alston from Stanford, ran a 4.40), and only 10 safeties total have run sub-4.5.

Just a little perspective for everyone.  People talk about recruits who run 4.4 40s, and that's almost never true.

But it's not one or the other.  Assuming we get Green, we'd still have room for Dawson and Hunt, and maybe another after that.

Our CB recruiting has been a little thin the last few years, so taking an extra isn't a bad idea.  Plus, and this relates to Libertine's response, if we get Dawson then it allows a guy like Jourdan Lewis to move to WR where he might be a better fit (and the need is just as great).  We're not in on any WRs who would be as good as Lewis.

I was speaking from a redundancy at positions pov, instead of overall class numbers, but I suppose if Countess is healthy then Lewis wouldn't need to sit behind him. Corners don't really sub much anyways, but the dropoff from Countess to Dawson next year would be about as noticable as the dropoff during the bowl game. He's pretty fast, but I don't think either he or Stribling or Hill would be a good fit as a field corner out on an island.

We do have 7 receivers and 3 pass catching TE's, one of whom was an All American. We have no idea who 5 of them are yet, really, but we have more WR's than cover corners for now. I guess it'll come down to how the coaches feel.

Hunt would be a huge get this weekend.  After seeing his drills at the UA game, he would make an great addition to an already stellar O-line haul.  And after watching the MNC game last night, I think everyone realizes what a dominating O-line can bring you.

Can someone explain to me why we all say "buckle up" all of a sudden? I hadn't heard much use of it here till this recruiting season, and quite frankly, it makes us sound like tools.
