Should I be more excited??

Submitted by CheckOutMyRod on

I'm not sure if its because of the last few years but I just cant let myself get all crazy over this win. Dont get me wrong I had a blast watching the game saturday and was thrilled with the out come! For some reason I just cant let myself get too pumped up. Is anyone else feeling this way? Should I just say f&%k it and just be excited for every win we get and not worry about whats coming up??

I know its a bad thread but thats just the way I feel. Plus I live in Ohio so I dont really have any other Michigan fans to get a feel for how they feel.

I am the same way. Excited about the win and how we look but after last year I don't want to get too excited because we really don't know how good Conn is, or how good Michigan is . I will feel the same way if we win this weekend too. Excited but feeling like I shouldn't get my hopes up quite yet.

One of two things will happen.  Either we will continue to win, in which case retrospect will demonstrate that it was perfectly okay to have been crazy-excited over the first win.  Alternatively, we may lose, in which case you may end up wishing you could have enjoyed the excitement while it flickered.  Either way, enjoy the win.  All in, go blue, get crazy.

when it comes to football. The way the last two years have gone for Michigan would cause you to feel like this because of that 5 game streak you guys had going in 2009. I think though if any win you should get excited for should be Notre Dame. It's the 2nd big test for your team and it's Michigan's first road game this season. Be enthusiastic about the win but don't let all this Heisman list or AP poll stuff go too your head to early because if something goes wrong then your hopes are all up.

...for people who actually play on the team.  It doesn't matter if I get too excited, because I live in Seattle and watch the games on television.  So that's why I say, party like it's 1997!

Listen, with our schedule, as long as we take care of business on the road in South Bend, we have a very good chance, i.e. 90% or so, that we will be 6-0 to start the season.  That means that we're bowl eligible in 6 games.  After the first 6 games, then you are justified in slowing down your excitement a bit and turn it into concentrated focus on the next tough team.  But for now... don't hold anythng back.   GO BLUE!!

I think until we know the consistency of this team its impossible to get that level of excitement back to where it used to be.  I think it may have something to do with the 4-0 start we had last year only to implode the rest of the season.  I think once we know this team is consistently good again then those emotions will come back to the way it used to be.  As for me It's always the same.  Michigan football is amazing and there's nothing in my life that tops it.  I eat, sleep, and breathe Maize and Blue.  Here's to a solid, consistent 2010 season that ends with us celebrating a bowl victory!

have struggled like Michigan stick with their teams through thick and thin. I can't imagine how hard it has been to be a Wolverine fan for the last two years up in Ann Arbor under Rich Rod with back to back losses to teams like Purdue, MSU, Illinois and of course Ohio State. I think though the Uconn game did show the college football world that maybe Michigan is finally starting to piece together some missing parts to Rodriguez's spread offense. It looks like you have the right qb in Robinson now and the defensive line looks to have improved some. Don't listen to all the bull shit that OSU, MSU or ND gives you as of late. They all know that deep in their minds that there is always a chance for Michigan to comeback someday and beat them again. I'm truly excited to play you guys in 2011. I think it's a great way to officially be welcomed into the Big Ten!

I for one am super-pumped after that game - I could care less what happened last year at this point (ignoring it for this week anyway).  The future is now and I intend to enjoy every freaking minute of this.  Right now it is all about this Saturday at 3:30 and I can't freaking wait.

years in which the Big 10 was proven to be fools gold, I won't even get that excited if we win every Big 10 game.

RichRod needs to prove he can win against Florida, Alabama, USC from 2003-05, the Tommie Frazier Huskers, that Michigan State team that tied ND in the greatest game ever, Fielding Yost's 1901-1905 Michigan teams, and finally, the Empire (both Vader-era and the less-hyped but surprisingly stout Grand Admiral Thrawn post-Death Star II version)....

...before I'll really believe he was the second best choice after Urban Meyer (who so totally wanted the job but Herbstreit fucked it up).

So I wrote a diary entry in which I asked the same question, i was killed with replies and death threats because I wrote it!! So after that experience, I will go ahead and say f%^& it, get so freakin excited, its gonna be so much fun watching Michigan this season, at least we have hope which we didn't dream of in 2008 and mid season last year.. live it up buddy!!! GO BLUE

was critical.  Mission accomplished.  Although it doesn't necessarily mean anything for the rest of the season, 1-0 is infinitely better than 0-1.  Get excited.

simply because it's fall and we're into another Michigan Football season. What happened Saturday is gravy.

But, it was ONE GAME.

It's ok to be excited because we might have a better team on the field this year, compared to the last 2 seasons, but I'd caution against unrealistic expectations.

After the 4-0 start last year, and our youth defensively, we just need to let this season play out.

I remember how excited I was after a couple good plays in the Utah game.  Last year I said "We're back!" as I thought ND was going to be an awesome team and that we beat them.  At least UCONN came in with rave reviews and proved that they could win last year.  If we beat ND, I will be pretty confident that we will make huge strides this year.  Even when we were winning early in the year last year I was surprised when we made good plays.  After Saturday, we hummed so well on offense that by the end of the game I was expecting to run up and down the field.  That is a good feeling I haven't had in a while.  There really isn't an answer for a QB with that freaking speed.

I cant help but think that Saturday's win over Uconn just felt different than last year. Being all in and emotionally invested makes every win feel so much better. I understand if people don't want to get hurt, but if you really believe in RR then it is something you have to do. Just my .02

I agree that the UConn win felt special. Like the next step.

But I sure as hell felt like that against WMU and ND last year as well. I guess we did take a step last season. It was just a lot smaller than we were hoping for.

As Michigan climbs back up to what we were/should be, each step will get harder. And that is part of the reason I am just focusing on one game at a time.

As good as the WMU and ND wins were last year, there were definitely some red flags for later in the season. This was the most clear in the Indiana game and after seeing ND struggle as the season went on.

Looking back, the Indiana game in particular sticks out to me as a glaring indication of how the rest of the season would go. At the time, however, it seemed like maybe we just took them lightly and werent focused.

Its for this reason that I take any judgements that I am tempted to make about this team with a grain of salt. UConn could go on to win the Big East or they could struggle to make a bowl. ND could win 10 games this season or they could win 5. We should blow out UMass, BGSU, Indy, and Illinois but who knows how good we really are.

So I'm going to be patient. I root for Michigan with my whole heart, mind, body, and soul each and every week. But I also have to be realistic and try to keep things in perspective. At the end of the day, however, each loss will be absolutely devastating and each win thrilling beyond belief. Thats what happens when we invest so much into the school and program we love.

Personally, I will feel a huge relief once we hit 6 wins, but I'm sure I'll want more. What Michigan fan wouldn't?

Sorry for the ramble. I gotta be able to talk Michigan with someone, and you guys are like family.

RR has a history of making his 2nd year in a program the big jump year. Yes, I know this is his 3rd year. But to me, in all thoughts, this is really the 2nd year of the program. Most of the guys that were here for year 1 are gone. Most of the team played for RR last year - we had ups and downs, but we also had a whole spring and summer. Saturday's game finally showed the type of offense RR can run when he has what he wants. I watched the ND vs. Purdue this evening, and I am feeling good about our chances vs. the Irish. Their defense looked SLOW and they were getting hurt with the quick pass and guys in space - exactly what we do. Marve completely juked out ND on 1 read option and took it to the house for a score - I think we'll see DRob do that a few times. However, RR and UM need to win on the road and win against meaningful teams. If we beat ND, 5-0 is very likely. Last year though during the run to 4-0 I didn't think we played too well. Almost lost to IU, Eastern held in there for about a 1/2.

Beath the Irish! Go Blue!

The mixed feelings you have are definitely something I am experiencing as well.

I was ultra-excited for the win on Saturday, but by Sunday I turned my attention to ND (much like the team had to) and realized that this week is the gateway game to big things.

A win this week means a probable 5-0 start with MSU, Iowa, @PSU, Illinois, @Purdue all to follow. If we are 5-0 I will look at all of these games as toss-ups (or probable Ws in some cases), meaning the potential is there for a HUGE season.

A loss this week means we all must come back to earth and our original hopes of 6-8 wins and a bright future in 2011.

Right now, I am excited. But I am also cautious because of the last two years (particularly 2009's collapse) and because of the tough road game ahead. I do this, in part, to protect myself from massive disappointment. The past two years have been extremely hard on everyone in the program, and I think they have changed the way a lot of us approach each game throughout the season.

We, like the team, must take it one week at a time. And right now, I am 100% focused on ND. UConn is a distant memory.

I think there is that excitement every season. Just had some disappoinment the last two years. If Michigan stays healthy, this should be a very good year. I think RR finally has his offense the way he wants it. I think if we continue to see good posession drives, scoring tds and not fgs, keep the D off the field, excitment is justified. Hell, it's justified anyway, it's good to be a Michigan fan...

I'm excited.

Anytime you have a quarterback with wheels like that who can also throw the football effectively, you're gonna be tough to stop. That's not even to mention the running backs.

I had a ND buddy of mine say how they were going to key on Denard. I said "LOL... with whom? Good luck with that." You can spy a guy like Robinson all you want, if the offensive line blocks the way they did this past Saturday it won't matter.

UM only threw the ball, what? 19 times? Once Denard starts to read defenses, watch out. The spread is typically difficult to defend b/c your secondary can kind of get lulled to sleep.

Nothin' to worry about!

from the UConn game leveled off, you realize the reality is we have a lot of holes/question marks.

Now, those holes/question marks could swing to the positive side or the negative side. It is too early to tell.

IMO we will learn way more about the team, win or lose after this weekend and at IU.

I also still fear MSU and Iowa may have too much of a power game for us although we appear to not only be faster on D this year, but bigger and stronger.

I always believe the team can win any given game, but my expectations for this season are still pretty low. Nonetheless, UConn is a known quantity, so I do feel good about a dominant win. It's a good sign.

My expectations will only start to rise if the 2010 Wolverines completely dismantle the 2010 Irish on both sides of the ball. Otherwise, even with a close win against ND, I have no plans to repeat last year. I put way too much stock in beating them last year. Unless MSU falls in humiliating fashion, my expectations won't rise much until after the Iowa game.

Get excited. It's officially on. We are back and we are taking names. This team is unlike the last 2 in every respect, including attitude which I believe is most important but we have talent and understanding of schemes to go along with it. Plus we have some payback to hand out to more than a few teams. IT'S ON. Did I mention Dilithium. We paid our dues the last 2 years M fans, time to enjoy.

I think it depends on how many friends and family who root for other Big12Ten teams you can annoy in the process.  The more you have, the more excited you should be.

the offense was much better than expected, which was pretty good to begin with.  But it feels like we might be a an injury away from having to lower expectations.  The defense looked much better than expected, but it seems like uconn hurt themselves in the passing game with drops and inaccurate passes.  Against a solid QB, we're going to be giving up a lot of points.

We needed to at least split UConn/ND.  That's a done deal now.  Beating ND is a bonus.

We need to beat UMass and BG obviously.  That gets us to 3 wins.

We need to take 3 out of these 4:  Indy, Ill, Pur, MSU.  That gets us to 6 wins.

I think we can knock off at least one of the big 4:  Iowa, PSU, Wisc, OSU.  That gets us to 7 wins and a decent bowl game.

All of this is to give the RR experiment traction and keep it going.  It's an exciting brand of football.  Once recruits see that it will be here for awhile, Michigan will start getting the kind of recruiting classes it used to get, especially on D.

You can't help but be excited now, but the really big excitement comes down the road.

Sorry brahs, but if you can't see the difference between last year's MAC cupcakes and miracle comebacks and what happened on Saturday... well, I feel sorry for you. Feel free to get excited. This team warrants a lot of excitement.
