Should floyd move to safety?

Submitted by cargo on
Since Floyd doesnt have the physical skill set to play corner and if booboo gets reinstated do you think he should move to safety? I think it would workout well for him, since he seems to grasp the metal aspect really well. Also having a smart safety that can react and do whats needed would be a great addition to our rag tag safetys.

wondering that the other day. If JT lacks elite speed, why not try him at safty The main problem I notice with JT, is that his hips and change of direction just are not quick enough to be a elite corner or for that matter a pretty good one.

Perhaps the optimal alignment wasn't Floyd at CB and Woolfolk at S, perhaps it was the other way around. Then again, there's a lot of information that is not at our disposal; I'm guessing Floyd has practiced some at safety, and his performance there may have been poor. That said, if we're able to reinforce our depth at corner, it's worth considering.

That would allow us to keep Wolfolk and Warren at CB, let Floyd play FS with Willaims as the run-stuffing safety. Kovacs would then be a player that we rotate in and out of the game. That sounds almost good ... goodish?

My guess is the assumption coming into the season was that Cissoko was the second best corner on the team and would play the majority of the time, so Woolfolk would be best served to be a safety, therefore getting the best 4 dbs on the field. Once it was shown that Cissoko wasn't one of those 4, rearrangment was necessary.

The good thing about CB is you cover your man, and you don't have to cover the entire D. Having a safety come in and contribute as a true freshman requires dominant physical skill, exceptional acumen and/or speed (to recover from mistakes). Moving Floyd would put too much pressure and responsibility on him IMO. Williams is coachable, and has more physical presence. I think Williams can learn from week to week. It would be good to get as many minutes for him as possible before PSU.

Who says he doesn't have the skillset (love all these new catch phrases) to play corner? He's a redshirt frosh in his first season of action. Do all you slobs who judge players after a couple games have the same harsh bosses (or wives) in real life? I mean, I know Message Board Guy is perfect and all, but still, the kids are playing admirably, and the breakdowns against MSU and the Iowa tight end are more of a coaching thing if you axe me (SHHHHHH--no saying anything about the coaches, King!)

I don't understand you. You really have violent swings between saying stuff i agree with and stuff that doesn't make any sense whatsoever(agree with this one by the way).

He's not going to get much faster or gain much agility over time, and he was a safety recruit. Why is it a bad idea to move him to safety down the line? He was functional at corner, which made him the best apparent option for games 2-5, but he won't be good at corner because he has to play so far off his man. I don't know what sort of logic you're going for in your second paragraph, so I'll ignore it.

Too early to move Floyd to S. We still need the depth at CB and it would take too long for him to come up to speed. It was easy for Woolfolk because he already had experience at DB. Maybe next year once we have Turner and someone else steps up at DB it may be time to reconsider.

We have more depth at cornerback than we do at safety: CB - Warren, Cissoko, T. Jones, Woolfolk, Turner (5 scholarship players, 2 true freshmen) S - Williams, Kovacs, Emilien, Gordon, Van Slyke (3 scholarship players, 2 walk-ons, 2 true freshmen) I'd say we need more depth at safety than corner. Also, DB = defensive back = cornerbacks and safeties
