Shocking night in B1G Hockey

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Michigan's B1G Championship hopes looked dead and gone after last night's terrible loss.

Not quite.

MSU beat Minnesota 5-0. You read that right.

Also, Wisconsin beat Penn State, 4-3.

A win tomorrow and we will be in the same position we were in a week ago. Just down one point out of first place.

That Wisconsin score is key, because Wisconsin plays Minnesota next weekend. They'll be headed into that rivalry game with some momentum while minnie will be licking their wounds after an embarrassing loss.

Of course, none of what I typed means a thing if we don't get a win tomorrow. But it looks like this is a golden opportunity at a second chance.

I swear the hockey team has been more infuriating to watch than the basketball team the past couple of years solely due to the fact that the hockey team has been squandering boatloads of talent that the basketball team dreams of having.

Knowing this M team I predict a 9-6 win or a 6-5 loss or a 2 nothing win or 3-1 loss or a 1 nothing shoot out win/loss or something in the double digits.
Predicting this team is like herding cats.

I admittedly am not a big hockey person, but this team doesn't seem very reliable to jump on an opportunity like this.

I trust the knowledgeable people on here telling me we have a lot of talent, but we certainly don't seem to capitialize on it

Tomorrow is the biggest game of the season. Period.

And surprise surprise, it won't be televised nor will it be streamed. Going old fashioned and listening to the radio of it.

Players can be drafted once they reach 18 years old. So you can have incoming freshmen already having draft rights or guys on the team that are sophomores or juniors can be drafted.

Michigan has two first round draft picks on the team this year.

There are 30 first round picks in a draft that has 211 picks that are selected from all over the globe. As you know, first rounders are sure things. Dylan Larkin jumped straight from Michigan to the NHL and became an all-star as a rookie.

As far as the guys that we've gotten that were first rounders, they've all been pretty damn good.

In the last 15 years: Komisarek, Nystrom, Tambellini, Montoya, JMFJ, Cogliano, Mitera, Summers, Patch, Trouba, Larkin, Werenski, Connor.

Damn good? You clearly didn't watch half of these guys play. There's not a chance in hell I would describe Jack Johnson's college career as damn good, Summers was average, Pacioretty had half a good season. But, you didn't actually watch any of those guys play, did you?

They all played well. We're they all great? No and that's kind of my point. Michigan has had its share of good to great performances out of first rounders and then some average to good performances.
I wouldn't say any of those players were bad, underachieved their lofty expectations? Yes but not bad players

Posting your untrue same crap twice doesn't make it better. I've been watching Michigan Hockey since I was a little kid. Hence why I named the last 15 years. But you didn't get that because you can't spell "assume" without ass.

Sure seems like it since he was shelled Friday and pulled for Nagelvoort for the first time in the calendar year.

No idea who will start tomorrow and I'm quite afraid of that. Racine or someone needs to get it together. This is not the time to go through this musical goalie thing again.

But I keep coming back to the fact that he was in Ann Arbor for the last twenty years. Tech didn't just realize Mel existed a few years ago. I have to imagine he turned them down multiple times through the 90's and 2000's so his situation appears to be different in that regard. I think we could get him to come back because surely he realizes Tech has a ceiling. Calumet ain't a boomtown anymore

So he's like our Harbaugh, except that he's nothing like Harbaugh. He has more comparisons to Hoke than he does to Harbaugh. Harbaugh means so much to us because of his success here as a player. He is one of the most successful players in Michigan history as far as college and pro careers are concerned. He also means so much to us because of his close association with Bo. Now he has returned to Michigan to return the program to the prominence that we are accustomed to, he helped establish, and his mentor was a huge influence on. Pearson is the same thing to Tech. Not Michigan. Pearson played at Tech. His only connection to Michigan is as an assistant coach. He isn't returning to Michigan to return his school to greatness. We are a top 10 team, we don't need to be returned to greatness and we are also not his school. He connects more to Hoke because neither played here. Both bring ideas of hope and glory to the program. But the point being he has far more comparisons to Hoke than he does Harbaugh. Hell, Mike Knuble's career is a better comparison to Harbaugh than Pearson's career is.

And Harbaugh was never a coach here. So again, there is no comparison between the two. Harbaugh is a former standout at Michigan who has had great success at his other coaching stops. Pearson is Tech's Harbaugh, because he was a standout at TECH. That's my point. To be hockey's version of Harbaugh, you would have to be an alum and a former standout player. Think Marty Turco or Brendan Morrison coming back to coach the team. Pearson is a great coach and I have nothing against him or the idea of him coaching Michigan, but he is by no means, "our Harbaugh."

Yep. There would be no excuse for Michigan not to go after him. This may be a dumb question- but would Mel's buyout be an issue at all?

You can't hire someone currently on the staff. Granted, from my observations, they are the ones actually coaching the team- but we see how far that has gotten Michigan the past 3 years.

SB Nation has an article from July 2015 that says "Michigan Tech has some protection from Pearson leaving in the form of a hefty buyout. His current buyout is $300,000 until May of next year, then decreases in $50,000 increments each remaining year of the contract."

That's a drop in the bucket to get the coach you want.

Football, basketball, and hockey have mastered one thing - choking when it matters.

that Racine is in net this afternoon?  he's picked a hell of a time to be a head case.  not that any time is a good time, but now when the B10 championship is on the line?  the alternative doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but damn!  the soft goals he's given up the last 2 games makes me wonder.

This is nice. Just more maddening that we didnt take care of business and take control . Maybe this will help the team to understand they cant just show up and win. Every game is a fight from here on out.
