Shocking exodus continues for post-Harbaugh 49ers

Submitted by KO Stradivarius on

Mark Purdy is a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, he talks about the mass exodus from the 49er's.  So much for the BS that the players did not like Harbaugh.

Yet in almost all respects, team owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke can blame only themselves for the mess. They teed it all up with their clumsy handling of former coach Jim Harbaugh's departure (although he wasn't entirely blameless). Then they exacerbated it with their professions of "winning with class" while in too many cases ignoring their own slogan.

Well I can now go back to totally ignoring the NFL like I did for 30 years before JH took the Niners job. My wife will like this.

I don't feel bad for York or Baalke. They deserve whatever flak they get from the fanbase.

They ran a coach out of town that made their team relevant for the first time since the Steve Young days, and are allowing their star players to leave or retire. Harbaugh may be a little intense sometimes, but when he wins you football games and brings you to three straight NFC title games, I don't give a crap if you're the team janitor or the team owner. You shut your mouth and find a way to make that relationship work. You tell any player who isn't on board with Harbaugh that they've got two options: they can fall in line or find a new team.

Those two screwed the team, the fanbase, the organization, and in all likelihood, themselves. If the team tanks next year, and all signs seem to point in the direction of that happening, they could find themselves clearing out their offices soon after.

But hey, I'm not mad at them. I'm thankful for them. If they didn't make the idiotic choices they did, Michigan probably never would've gotten Harbaugh to come here.

is that if he has a thick skin he can ride it out for awhile.  The NFL is a money machine and SF has its new stadium so the public perception of him doesn't impact business.  It looks like they will flounder for some time but eventually they will hire a decent GM and coach.  In the NFL the return to repectability is not that far off (despite the longer term examples out there).  In the meantime it will be fun to watch him get roasted and know that their failures only enhance Harbaugh's reputation.
