Shawn Hunwick named College Hockey News 1st team All CHN

Submitted by denverblue on

That's strange, I don't see "1st team All-CCHA" G Taylor Nelson on the list.../s

Another great honor for Hunwick after his 5 years with the program.

Senior goalie Shawn Hunwick leaves quite a legacy behind at Michigan. He filled in towards the end of his junior season, and then was expected to give way to big-name recruit Jack Campbell in 2010-11. But Campbell walked away from his commitment to go to Major Junior, and it was all Hunwick last season, as he helped Michigan get to the national championship game. He then came back this year as a fifth-year senior when highly-touted John Gibson also backed out of his commitment. He leaves as Michigan's all-time top goaltender in goals against average.

Other CCHA picks: 2nd team F Reilly Smith, Miami, 2nd team D Torey Krug, Michigan State, All Rookie team G Frank Slubowski, Western Michigan

It's interesting that there isn't a single school with more than one player on either the first team or second team (combined).  I'd imagine that's a rare occurrence and it speaks to the lack of a dominant team this season.

First Team
F Jack Connolly, Sr., Minnesota-Duluth
F Spencer Abbott, Sr., Maine
F Austin Smith, Sr., Colgate
D Justin Schultz, Jr., Wisconsin
D Brian Dumoulin, Jr., Boston College
G Shawn Hunwick, Sr., Michigan

Second Team
F Brock Nelson, So., North Dakota
F Reilly Smith, Jr., Miami
F Drew Shore, Jr., Denver
D Torey Krug, Jr., Michigan State
D Danny Biega, Jr., Harvard
G Troy Grosenick, So., Union

Congrats to Hunwick. Well deserved.

Also, glad to see Krug leaving early. I don't know what their incoming recruiting class is like but that's got to hurt.

I have not found a single thing on incoming Spartan recruits, I think most of the fanbase has given up on hockey until they get good again. I will try to find out as much as I can and maybe do an early CCHA preview.

Comley did not recruit his last few seasons in East Lansing, leaving Tom Anastos with almost nothing on the blueline. It's so bad that it's going to take a few classes to build depth back.

Jake Chelios and Matt Grassi are the only returning defensman to log any real ice time, Chris Sandmeyer and Branden Carney did not play last season. They will lean heavily on freshman and forwards switching over. I would not be surprised to see Yanakeff jump if he gets drafted.
