Shawn Conway Update

Conway has enjoyed his experience so far at Butte and still has his sights set on playing Division I football.

The coach that offered Conway to play football at the University of Michigan, Rich Rodriguez, is no longer the coach at U of M. Rodriguez was hired by the University of Arizona and is still interested in coaching Conway.

“Rich Rod offered me [to play football] at Arizona so I might end up there,” Conway said. “But I’m keeping my options open so far.”

Conway had always had his sights set on UofM, but now his decision on where he will go to school is open.

“It’s pretty open right now,” Conway said. “I’d love to go to Michigan, but I’ve only talked to Brady Hoke (Rodriguez’s replacement at U of M) once since he’s been the coach and I don’t know what his plans are with me or even if he has any intentions with me so I’m just keeping it open.”

Attrition in our recruiting classes has been so awful. We could've used a WR of his size this year. Even Hoke's first class had Kellen Jones and Chris Barnett defect.

Every class at every school has a number of guys who leave school or never pan out.  A lot of them do it early.  Just look at old recruiting classes at Michigan and you'll see that this is nothing new.

It also doesn't hurt you unless the guy was definitely going to play (ends up being a star somewhere else, for instance) which is pretty rare aside from guys like Mundy and Fargas.  If a guy isn't going to be a starter or super reliable backup in his junior/senior year you are better off having him hit the road right away.  A nice level of attrition helps a program bring in new guys (there is a reason the SEC actively tries to force guys out, because it helps your program).

You don't want to be in a position where you have to turn down a guy like Diamond or Garnett because an injured, out of shape TE or a lazy o-lineman is taking up one of your 85 scholarship slots.

Still can't understand how an admissions department that gave second chances to guys like Quinton McCoy and Marques Slocum (who could never hack it academically) ended up denying Witty.  I can't think of another otherwise eligible player that we've been forced to pass on.  He's also a guy who definitely could have helped the last two years on D.

Do you suppose that perhaps it was an admissions department, and an Athletic Department, and a University administration that had been utterly spooked and knocked on its heels by some terrible (and spectacularly unfair) press reporting, which in turn provoked a sweeping NCAA investigation of the entire football program?

Or maybe just bad luck?

I don't think Hoke's first class had a surprising amount of attrition. Losing one-third of your class, as we seemed to average the previous three years, is bad. It's inevitable that some guys in each class will not stick. What you hope to avoid is guys not sticking because they get in trouble with the law, can't do the school work at Michigan, or weren't really vetted all that well in the first place.
