Shawn Conway has NOT transferred to Clarkston.
The article/post itself is behind a paywall, but the info is on the front page. I imagine what this means for his senior year eligibility is behind the paywall...

[[mod edit: Despite Rivals' rumblings, Conway has confirmed via Twitter he has not transferred to Clarkston]]
I"ve been a sports fan since about 1960, and I don't know if I have ever seen "fair" and "MHSAA" in the same sentence without the word "not." HS athletic boards, not only in Michigan, but pretty much everywhere, are notorious for denying kids eligibility and making teams forfeit games over "technicalities" that have no room for reasonable interpretation.
Then, as if it will magically make everything OK, they claim it is for the good of the athletes involved. As if...
I agree with the rule, in general: It keeps a High School from essentially recruiting the best kids and having them transfer into the district as a ringer for the school's sports teams.
However, it would be very very easy (and Conway seems to be the perfect example of this... and as far as I know, Crawford's situation years ago) to do research and evaluation of parents, teachers, both coaches to learn and confirm that some transfers are not only comletely unrelated to playing sports, but are simply to benefit the kid and provide stability, guidance, and a better life. Part of that stability, guidance, and a better life may be to let him play organized sports... whether he is a 3-star recruit or a 3rd string punter.
Prime example of "Children first"? "No... we want to screw over the kids to make sure the integrity of a game is in tact. He can join Glee club if he wants to be on a team."
...activities are true, there was no way he was going back to Seaholm. I wish him the best but am not counting on him for the 2011 recruiting class anymore given the program's need to avoid controversey.
This is not based on any insider information, it's pure speculation on my part. Take it for what it's worth.
If the kid can ball, why would this matter? None of this is affecting his college eligibility right?
I agree. This has nothing to do with grades ect.... Granted he won't be playing this fall...but him knowing that, he can try and take summer classes as well as a tough fall courses and leave early. Plus as we have seen in videos, he is a proven gem.
what reports are you referring to? all i've read is that his family situation - over which he has no control - is pretty bad, so his coach got custody of him. did he do something? otherwise, there's no reason to feel anything but bad for the kid.
Read my post later in the thread.
I don't know why MGoShoe is getting negbanged for simply expressing an opinion that is openly based on an "If then" proposition. It's willfully naive to think that the DD affair won't have internal athletic dept. repercussions on football recruiting in terms of vetting both character and academics. What effect all of it will have on Conway is open to debate, but negbanging simply because somebody thinks we won't end up with a particular player IF certain things turn out to be true is juvenile.
...the backstop, Don.
The negbang doesn't bother me really. I understand why folks are leery of the inference I made and I respect that. I certainly didn't advocate that he not continue to be part of the class, I just pointed out that there's now a character issue on the table and that will get additional scruiting in today's environment. I'm not sure how that's even arguable.
I wish the kid luck and I hope he is able to play at Clarkston and that the suspension Tim mentions below is enough to turn him around. If not, perhaps as some have suggested he could get on track to graduate early so that an early enrollment and participation in spring camp could help to make up for his potentially lost senior season.
Moving on...
What is going on with him?
"considering his situation at home" "if reports of his alledged activities are true"
Basically, his family life is a very bad situation, and his high school coach at Seaholm has been granted custody of Shawn.
As far as his alleged activities, we'll keep unnecessary dirt off the board, but he's reportedly gotten into a bit of trouble at Seaholm, and was suspended for a week or so in April. Nothing that resulted in any criminal charges, fwiw.
ok, thanks for answering.
Remember some early article saying Seaholm didn't have a qb that could throw so his skills were never really highlighted. Any different at Clarkston?
Wouldn't matter. Has to sit a year bc of transfer rules. This was all discussed in a diary or thread I can dig up later. Possibly a Wednesday recruiting piece
edit: here it is
Are you sure you'll be able to dig it up, or did you delete THAT too?
whoooooooooosh
I just thought it was a joke. I haven't paid attention to this so-called feud.
You knew this was coming...
Geaux_Blue needs to go hug his kids instead of modding this board all day.
Alright, alright.
Seaholm can sign off on a release allowing him to play in the fall at Clarkston, I believe. Not sure if they'll do that, necessarily. I'll look into it over the weekend.
If for whatever reason an exception comes up that allows him to play, Clarkston's QB (Scarlett) last year had a rocket, and they probably beat Adams by 30 if they had someone to catch it. If he's not back they'll have someone, they're always loaded.
Isn't there a way for them to waive the requirement that he sit out for a year, given the circumstances of the transfer? It seems that this transfer isn't entirely voluntary, but rather, a necessity.
It's one sports season, not a full year.
when i wuz in da 9th grade mah corch tole me habway inta da seesun dat i wuznt elble, but sinsa we wuz such a bad teme he let me play anywae. i wuz the qb. the rulz is no goodt.
troof stery.
It doesn't seem fair that he has to sit out a year considering his circumstances. Can they appeal that to anyone?
He can get a waiver from the MHSAA to play immediately. I have not read the article so I don't know if they tried that yet. So everyone don't just freak out yet, well unless the article states that Shawn has tried to appeal and failed
The MHSAA never seems to operate on a level that makes sense to anyone and I would be shocked if a waiver was actually granted.
I live in Clarkston and hope that the MHSAA lets him play! I would love to see him tear it up. Clarkston was a decent AA football school last year. I am not sure how good they will be this year.
The Union ftw. actually proposed to my wife there couple years back.
If you people can keep your personal issues with mods off the boards, I think it would be beneficial to all. Petty little posts in multiple threads are unbecoming, unnecessary and to me are more tiresome than the boycott the freep bull. Please address your umbrage in a different form or forum
What do you mean by "you people?"
As a mod myself, I wholeheartedly agree. I don't always think the other mods act fairly, but to start e-arguments about it in every thread is beyond tedious.
it's gotten to that point bc people think they know which mod did what and it becomes these huge ordeals. meh.
I think the mods could save themselves quite a bit of grief by not advertising the fact that they are, in fact, mods.
Watching how defensive you get about your "mod-ing" is 99% the reason most people bring it up, that much I'm certain.
Considering his new guardian is the coach at Seaholm, I imagine they'll give him a release to play at Clarkston.
