Shawn Conway to enroll at Grand Rapids Community College

According to the Inside The Fort on Rivals, Shawn Conway is going to attend GRCC for a year, and then transfer to Michigan. I found this quite interesting as I work at GRCC. The football program here is pretty good, and is headed by former longtime Muskegon coach Tony Annese.
Now, I know the transfer part is a big hurdle for JUCO kids, but according to the post, GRCC offers several classes that Michigan will accept. So, hopefully this won't be the last we hear from Shawn Conway. Good luck to him!
For those without a Rivals subscription, here is the key part:
GRCC is the only community college in Michigan that fields a football team, and it apparently is one of the few that has a chance of placing students into universities like Michigan’s.

There were a few kids at my high school who did dual enrollment there, and a lot of GRCC courses transfer to Michigan. The only reason I did mine at GVSU was for transferring to out-of-state colleges.
As long as he keeps his chin up and his nose down (in the books) he should be ok. Best of luck to him.

but michigan is in the same state as GVSU...

best decision i made in high school probably... even better than AP classes

Dual enrollment was pretty much the greatest thing ever. Knocked out half my distribution before I even set foot in my first class in the Frieze Building.

# credit hours taken = # hours x2 you weren't required to be at the school
thus, i took two 3 credit, once a week classes and only had to be at school for 2.5/3 hours a day. or something like that. all i know is i was gone every day by noon.
any high schoolers reading this blog: do this.

I just wish I would have heard about duel enrollment before my Senior year of HS. Seriously, the conselours at my school were beyond horrible.
Still I recommend it to any HS out there, best thing you can do to prepare yourself for college.

I'm 19, I will have about 82 credit hours once this semester is over, and I would be graduating next year if I would have stayed a business major.
Dual Enrollment was the greatest thing Inkster High School did for me.

Where did you go to HS, if you don't mind me asking?

East Kentwood

Haha. I can see the football field from my deck. Just moved here from Lansing last summer. I love it here.

If you wouldn't mind e-mailing me at [email protected], I have a question for those of you with experience at East Kentwood.

Thanks for posting this. Good luck Shawn and I hope we see you in AA in the future.

one year isn't that bad, and we should be set at WR for the next year..
Good to know he'll be developing nicely under a good coach, I'm glad he's sticking with michigan, and not just trying to qualify for a different school, he sounds like a great kid, and a true michigan player.
work hard, both on the field and in the class room and go blue!
December 9th, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
and does well in school. Go Blue!!

Good luck to Shawn. A year is not a long time to wait when running out of that Big House tunnel is the payoff.
December 9th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
Good luck to him and I hope we see him in a winged helmet.
December 9th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
Now down Sousa and now Conway for 2011. Plenty of time to get some replacements I hope.
December 9th, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
all we can do is hope he becomes the exception to the rule.

Someone posts about Tony Annese, and you immediately think "too soon, man, too soon" because of the RoJo images it conjures.
I feel sad for myself.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
I had the exact same thought. Sigh.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
is it to creepy to have him sign a michigan mini helmet?
December 9th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
I have multiple friends who went this same route to get into Michigan. Hopefully he will be able to make this work out for the best.

Wasn't part of the problem with Conway's grades the fact that he transferred two times or something like that? I thought this was the reason his transcript was messed up. Could be wrong though.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:15 PM ^
I expect him to perform very well vs other juco teams

I played a few years at small college and we scrimmaged GRCC. At the time, a few years ago, they had stud athletes and a really solid program for developing players. Good luck to him and I hope we see him in maize and blue in the future.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
I know many people that are attending GRCC and I dual enrolled there myself. The classes there are pretty easy compared to most colleges, so it should not take Conway very long to get his grades up so that he can transfer to Michigan.
I look forward to seeing him on the field after a year at GRCC. GO BLUE!!!

GRCC is a historically good program, dating to the days it was known as GRJC. Pretty sure they won at least one national title in the late 80s/early 90s. It's also one of the better CCs academically. Took some classes there in HS, and was impressed.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
That's pretty cool, a lot of my friends are on GRCC's football team right now. Coach Annese used to coach my high school football team, and that man can coach. GRCC is one of the top Juco teams in the country.

Haha thanks, I love me some Dilla. Sucks that he's gone...

I could be wrong, but I thought that if a player goes to a JC/CC, he has to have the Associate's Degree before they could become eligible for the NCAA? Is it possible he is going there just to take classes and not to play any football?
December 9th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
I am pretty sure that they only need to make satisfactory academic progress while at a CC. This means that they have to a minimum number of credits in a year but I do not think it means that they have to have an associates degree.
December 9th, 2010 at 3:11 PM ^
Here's hoping he does well at GRCC and then transfer to UM when he can.
December 9th, 2010 at 3:19 PM ^
I took a class at GRCC the summer after my freshman year at U of M. All 5 credits transferred over, though the grade didn't. Best of luck to Mr. Conway!
December 9th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
I took a few classes there, and I will say this, if you can't get decent grades while at GRCC, you can't get decent grades anywhere.
My Spanish professor walked in to class on the day of the 150pt exam and said, "Judging by the scores, I think that last test was too hard, so I gave you all an extra 100 points for the class."
That's exactly what I wanted, because the credits transferred to Calvin, and I didn't have to endure their incredibly hard intro to Spanish classes.

According to UMs website a student can transfer with a minimum of 25 credit hours and a gpa of 3.0 or higher. Thats for the school of Kinesiology and for "normal" students. I'm not sure if football players have different standards. A 3.0 at GRCC cant be to dificult, I had a 3.7 and I stupid.

...is a major pain at UM. That is well known. Good luck to him, though...he has had a rough road, i wish him all the best.
