Shaq Thompson would love to hear from Michigan?

Submitted by MGoCooper on

The article is behind a pay wall, but Steve Wiltfong says that Shaq Thompson would love to hear from Michigan. Which I'm certain the only person more surprised to hear that than Michigan fans, is Brady Hoke. I get irritated when certain recruits say they would love to hear from a particular school, that they really aren't interested in, that they just want to add to their resume. I'm not saying that this is the case in this scenario, but I suspect it is.

5* #1 safety to both Scout and Rivals for those curious. *5 #2 Athlete to 247 and 4* #4 safety to ESPN. We haven't offered. We'll see if anything actually develops from this or not. He had committed to Cal earlier this year and his brother went there so I'd assume they're still his leader. Interesting Michigan-related side note: Supposedly he's pretty close with WR Jordan Payton.

But does he need to pad his resume? When you have the offer list and guru ratings that he has, what's one more offer going to do? Almost everyone knows that this guy is a total monster, and those who don't aren't going to be swayed by one more offer. Him being so close with Payton and Payton being so interested in us might say something. Remember the talk about Payton creating another Fab Five? It was him and Thompson who were talking about doing that together.

Im sure Michigan would love to have him.

Its not like hes a 3* looking to get recognized, looks like most coaches and recruiting services already know of him.

Wilson, Gant, and probably Standifer. Clark already in 2013.  Plus the current roster is loaded there too.  None seem like a risk to decommit.

The only position that is MORE full than Safety is LB.

He can play CB or WR. Here is what scout.com says about him "Thompson is an elite athlete that stars on his team at defensive back, running back and receiver. He has the ability to play any of those on the college level, but his size and skill set may relegate him to safety. He has exceptional balance, instincts and closing speed. He is a sure tackler that seems to be more comfortable closing on a ball carrier than jamming a man at the line. Could play all 4 spots in the defensive secondary - Scott Kennedy"

I'm in the camp that says that some guys are such elite prospects that you don't turn them away - especially in August - almost no matter how the numbers look. Maybe a lower-rated commit at his position sees the writing on the wall and looks elsewhere. Maybe there's a position switch. Worst case, you just end up a little heavier than you'd like at one position and lighter at another until you correct for it with next year's class. If the guy is as good as everyone thinks, he'd more than make up for a little temporary roster imbalance.

If the coaches see his talent the same way the analysts do, then great.  But sometimes they don't (e.g.,Schutt, Lucien) and that's fine too.

Wilson is rated nearly as high as Thompson and Gant is a legacy.  I don't think either guy is going anywhere.

If there's a position switch amongst the current S recruits, it's probably to LB, where we're also full.  And many see Standifer as more of a Safety.

Maybe Thompson can be a CB or WR but most seem to want him at Safety.   I just have a hard time seeing it work unless the coaches just love the kid.

keep in mind the staff said they wanted to take one more elite DB so if he is truly interested in Michigan I am sure the staff will find a spot for him

Play him at CB, then that remaining DB spot that the coaches want to fill will be taken care of. Hopefully we can get an official out of him, that would be a start. We shouldn't say no if he wants to visit, like we did with Schutt. I am still stuck on that situation, and think we should have let him visit as well, just in case something happened in the future with Pipkins, oh well.

Does anyone know the context of him saying that. I mean did someone ask him what do you think about Michigan so he said he would love to hear from them because if so that means nothing. Now if he was asked who your favorites are and he mentioned Michigan that would be exciting.

I don't really believe he is all that interested in ND at this point, maybe after a visit but until then he is all Cal, or at least all left coast
