Shaq Thompson Eliminates Michigan

Submitted by hart20 on

Shaq Thompson has eliminated us after this weekend. His new top 3 are ASU, Cal, and Washington. He's taking his last official visit to Utah in 2 weeks. He also semi-eliminated Oregon and said this,

"Those three have my attention right now," he said. "I was feeling Oregon too but the more I think about how small Eugene is, I'm not sure that fits me. I'm kind of a big city guy."

I'm not sure how big Eugene is but I don't really consider Ann Arbor a big city.

Barring something crazy happening, it doesn't look like he'll visit. We always knew he was a longshot but it was still nice to think we had a fighting chance.

However, we're pretty set at the safety position for a couple years. If we can put a full court press on Yuri Wright and Diggs that will more than make up for missing out on Thompson.

Ouch.  It kind of hurts to be rejected for a stable of perennial PAC-12 also rans.  I guess he states plainly though that his decision is not necessarily motivated by football considerations.  Best wishes to him...

I was going to be surprised if he came to Michigan.  Glad the coaches asked him to come on a non-game weekend to measure how serious he was.

Now, I'm pissed @ Oregon for embarrassing you/me/us/my family in 2007 (that was the first and only game my sister and mom came to), for snagging Jake Fisher, and for being Pharoah Brown's evil temptress...

But I don't understand why a recruit would consider ASU over Oregon.

Though I've been out of the game for years, my understanding is that the, um, "talent" down at ASU is definitely awe-inspiring.  You bring some young kids down there, show them how girls dress on an average day, and you might nab some kids.  And yes, that is somewhat sexist and presuming the kid is heterosexual, but there is a reason that you hear about kids always wanting to visit certain random schools known more for their student body than their athletics/academics.

The big city comment seems wierd to me.  I'm not sure what that has to do with playing for a prestegious football program or getting a good education.  I hope he's choosing his school based on the right reasons and the wrong ones.

I bet $1 he ends up at ASU.

And it will have nothing to do with the Big city, college town vibe, new stadium, facilties or academics. It will have to do with short shorts, tanned skin and boobies. I base this on nothing...but using his decidedly questionably line of thinking I'm going with this as the final result.

Very few major college football programs are in big cities - maybe USC/UCLA if you count LA.  Ann Arbor has more of a cosmopolitan, "big city" feel than just about any.

I always think the "big city" argument made by kids is more of a "I don't want to go to X because of the weather/academics/student body/etc., but I don't want to point that out."  so they dress it up with generalizations.  Ann Arbor is a decent-sized city and Detroit and Chicago are all within driving distance.  Plus, it's not like these kids have oodles of time to travel and have fun anyway.

So Eugene has maybe 20 or 30,000 more people in the city than Ann Arbor, but metro area they are about the same. Tempe is slightly bigger than Eugene, but remember Phoenix is just down the road from ASU. UW is in Seattle. And with Cal you can get to San Francisco and (hooray) Oakland.

Portland is two hours from Oregon and while Detroit is not that far from Ann Arbor, I doubt that's the big city feel Shaq wants.

I do think it's kinda a shortsighted criteria to cut schools by, as both Ann Arbor and Eugene are good college towns, but Shaq obviously wants access to some of the bigger city stuff. Besta luck to him in his decision, too bad it wasnt Michigan.

city size seems kind of silly to me. but hey, i guess everyone has their reasons. tough loss though. he defianetly would have been great following kovaks and gordans departure.

he doesn't actually want to win any games while he is in college. I mean seriously ASU, Cal and Washington? those teams have like what, 1/2 Pac12 championships combined in the last 20 years?

It's pretty ridiculous to criticize his comment on city size. City size itself is a generalization obviously and the things that come along with that should absolutely be a factor on college choice. Whether good or bad. There are even schools in bigger cities with no college town. UC San Diego has no college town at all but is in the city. The college area atmosphere is a huge factor.

I'll take Dorsey as a substitute for Shaq. Given all the work he's put in, he really deserves to play for the Maize and Blue. A senior Thomas Gordon at strong safety, Junior Countess and senior Courtney Avery at the CBs. And Demar roaming centerfield. Sounds good.
