Good. Rest up for next season Devin, you did all you could this year.

At least this way, Shane's lost year of eligibiilty has a little bit of meaning.

Kid has a chance to make a name for himself.  Crappy news on Devin, especially since I already put money on us taking 3.5, the line will surely go up to 5 or 6 based on this news, I should have waited to bet.

I remember when we had a team so good that we won the NC with Tom Brady on the bench.  I would prefer a situation next year to have DG starting and be very confident with SM as a backup knowing that it is his team the following year.

Do your thang, Shane!

Sorry if off topic but I believe I saw jarrod Wilson still wearing a cast on his hand in one of the recent bowl preview vids. Would imagine we see Furman in his place again

As much as I think it hurts our chances to win this game becaus we will miss Gardner's feet, experience, decision making, etc. I still think we can win with Morris.  I am excited to see what Morris can do.  I think this will be good experience for him to get his feet wet, get an idea of what it takes to play at UM, and get his competitive juices flowing for the coming years.

Is that they knew before bowl practices began that Shane would be the starter, so at least all of the preparation would be focused on him. Certainly a better scenario than being thrown suddenly into the game....

We already know he can't run like Devin but maybe he can read the defense better and know in advance of the snap where he needs to throw. But we will absolutely need to stay out of third and long situations and I know we have said that enough to make it cliche' this year, but I can't stress this enough its a must. Once in a while will be ok but to continually get into that situation will be the death of us. I know, who didn't already know that? sorry to tell you that most snow is white (with the exception of where my dog may have been) but it is what it is, and don't forget this damn game has to be played in the year that has been most unkind to us, 2013. Also the sky is blue for most of the day. One other thing I wonder if he beat out Cleary or if he is still to tender to play from injury, that in itself could be a good sign Shane is good enough to win this game.....Go Shane and GO BLUE!!!

quicker releases, and balls thrown away to avoid a sack. Shane is considered a passer and doesn't rely on his feet like a dual threat QB. So, maybe he feels pressure better and has a little more success passing.

That would open the run game, which in turn makes play action more viable.

I'll let you know after the first 10 passes if my thesis is valid.

Would be a KSU blow out win and Shane looking horrible at QB. I would like to see a tough defensive game with a close win and Shane doing well. DG will be the starter next season but it would be great to have Shane able to step in and win games next season if DG gets injured.

Whatever happened to them?

I get that there is some gamesmanship, but I'd love to be able to kill time until the game watching Shane lead the offense in practice.

This ought to be interesting. It will give the coaches some hard evidence into Shane's game skills. He's has all the reps leading up to this game, so he prepared.

By far the #1 concern is his accuracy

Accuracy has never been his strong suit. In high school, in the Army all American game, and the few throws this season, the knock has been bad accuracy. Cannon arm, but no idea where it's going.

This is a huge game for Shane. I hope he does well

It would be nice for Michigan to put in the backup QB and have good things happen which has rarely happened for this team in the past. The law of averages has to kick in one of these days, right?

Went back to the turn of the century and came up with this.  Only includes games where the backup started the game.

2000 - Navarre Fills in for Henson
Bowling Green = W
Rice = W
UCLA = L

2001 = Navarre starts every game.
2002 = Navarre starts every game.
2003 = Navarre starts every game.

2004 = Henne replaces Gutierrez for first game.
Goes 9-3, Big Ten Title and Rose Bowl

2005 = Henne starts every game.
2006 = Henne starts every game.

2007 = Mallette fills in for Henne.
Penn State = W
Minnesota = W

2008 = (Who was the actual starter?)

2009 = Forcier starts every game.
2010 = Robinson starts every game.
2011 = Robinson starts every game.

2012 = Gardner Fills in for Robinson
Minnesota = W
Iowa = W
Ohio = L
S. Carolina = L

2013 = Morris fills in for Gardner
K. State = ?

6-3 or 15-6 over the last 13 seasons (depends if you want to count the entire 2004 season), with 3 or 4 of the losses coming against top 10 teams at the time, does not seem like we have struggled in this scenario.

Give me the under. The "Morris Truthers" are a special kind of stupid.

EDIT: This was in response to the guy (waaay up the thread) who put the over/under at 2.5 drives for the people agitating for Morris over Gardner to realize they were wrong.

Excited for Shane personally but I fear if he dosen't have a good game, that a lot of ingorant fans will throw him under the bus and try to discount him as our future QB.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from The Opening at Nike's Campus, Aug 2012

The Good:  Quick release.  The ball came out like a rifle shot.  Was accurate to his left and center.  Of note, he threw a 35 yard bullet, in traffic for a TD to a 6'6" tight end (ALA Commit) that looked like an NFL throw in accuracy and speed.  The blog writers around me were literally speechless after that throw.  He can also run well - good hips and first step.  He was probably the 3rd or 4th best QB that day, but the consensus around me was that he was the most fun to watch because of what he might do on any given trow.

The Bad:   Didn't complete a high percentage of throws and relatively large # of intreceptions.  Had difficulty with shorter "touch" passes that Joe Montana throw so well.  Overthows got picked off in zone coverage.

The ugly:  Looked much worse than the other pro-set QB's on progressions.

One of the opposing teams coaches (Neil Lomax) said he had an NFL arm. However, he was erratic and PSU's Hackenberg and the 6'6" Seattle kid going to USC looked miles ahead of him in terms of touch and receiver option progression.

As a side note, Jake Butt and Jordan Lewis looked great that day.  Jake's dad come over to talk to me (salt of the earth guy) when he saw my M outfit - asked if I was a former CB.  Great talk and story for another time.

Lots of comments about whether or not the game matters. It damn well does.

Lots of comments about Morris with predictions ranging from he'll be horrible to maybe just OK.  Almost no one predicting a break out game for him along with their being a fair number of references to the Morris "truthers" movement. But to be objective, Devin's results were at best inconsistent, so it is not unreasonable to wonder how things would be with someone else.

First,  I would say that Gardner is a huge talent, and I would much rather see him start this bowl game, but he also went through a long stretch in the middle of the season where he under achieved relative to his talent even given the obvious interior 0-Iine deficiencies. What we don't know is how much of it was his own indecisiveness, injury or probably and most likely, Al Borges.

Al Borges, above all things, demonstrates the behaviors of an ideologue. Only a stubborn, rigid, even arrogant person could bring us game plans of the likes that delivered us the Penn State and Nebraska debacles. And who the hell can forget (not forgive) the BS game plan he conjured up for the 2nd half of the Ohio game in 2012?  After putting up 21pts in the first half with Denard and Devin sharing the field he totally abandoned that approach. I wonder if someone from either Ohio, Sparty or Nebraska has compromising pictures of him somewhere that they'll publish if he calls a competent game plan against them.

The game matters, we'd be better with Devin, I hope like hell Shane is ready and actually think he will play well, and I hope like hell Borges doesn't F the whole thing up like he has the rest of the season.

GO BLUE!

I hope Shane does well, howwver, I have a sinking feeling that he will not live up to his 4 -5 status.  Not being accurare is a huge problem and haivng a "big arm" is not the advantage it used to be.  Color me skeptical.
