Shane Morris Out For Season?

Most of us knew that he was battling mono, but the reports were that he was playing through it (as he did against Brother Rice).  Today Kyle Meinke reports (via a Freep Article) that Shane Morris's coach is pessimistic regarding Morris's ability to play for the rest of his senior season.  Per his coach

“He won’t play this week," De La Salle coach Paul Verska told the Free Press, “and really, I’m not counting on him coming back the rest of the year."

Link: http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2012/09/report_shane_morris_mi...

Tough break for the future Wolverine, but assuming his bout with mono is as rough as most this seems like the right decision for his long-term health and career.  A tough break after he put so much effort into getting ready for the season and all the 7-on-7s.

Here's to hoping his coach is wrong, and Shane M. makes a speedier-than-expected recovery.

Best wishes to the young man.  An illness like that can really send anyone for a loop, no matter their physical fitness.  Hopefully he will use the time to support his team, learn Michigan's offense, recover physically and mentally, and enjoy his senior year in high school.  I really do wish he could graduate early, seeing as Michigan really does not have a clearly defined starter for next year.

Don't some cases of mono include inflamed internal organs? I seem to remember some friends in high school having to temporary quit all sports so that various things wouldn't rupture and explode and stuff after they got mono. Sitting out for football season might not be such a bad idea.

I'm actually relieved he's not trying to play.  I was probably walking around with it for a month or so just thinking I was overdoing things and so "merely" exhausted.  By the time I was diagnosed, I was having fevers spiking to much higher than usual with mono and couldn't even lift the phone book to call the hospital and check my test results.  Even had a bone marrow sample because of an anemia that could have meant leukemia, but was (fortunately) only related to the mono.  I flew home to let the folks take care of me and for a couple weeks couldn't even hold a paperback (or my eyes) open to read in bed.  It was probably another six months before I was back to normal.

But eventually I was.  And if Shane takes care of himself he will be too.

And that'll teach me for thinking the mono my frosh roommate had only meant a convenient two-week vacation from school.

most cases of mono resolve withing  two weeks and the patient will make a complete recovery-however i have seen severe complications that resulted in permanent disability. in one instance, a young man had encephalitic (brain) involvement and his neuro exam was like that of a stroke patient;  the second involved a young medical student who suffered permanent damage to her autonomic nervous system so that she could not stand without losing consciousnessness-she remains disabled to this day.

You're right - the risks of injury when suffering from mono go beyond the obvious ones of being a step or two slow when people are trying to tackle you with authority.  One's spleen can swell during bouts of mono, leading to an increased risk of a ruptured spleen.

But let's be careful that we're not overgeneralizing about enlarged organs being a liability.  Bobby Layne often called his hardened liver his secret weapon.  He used to use it as an extra blocker on passing plays, and as a lead blocker on keepers.  (It's a fact - I read it on the internet!)

And Reggie Nelson has gained a lot of positive buzz due to one of his organs being reportedly "inflammed" - a fact of which fans of EDSBS's Fulmer Cup are well-aware.  Yeah - I went there.

That is correct. Mono is most often associated with splenomegaly (an enlarged/inflamed spleen) and contact sports usually must be avoided due to the risk of splenic rupture.

Best wishes for a quick recovery! I've had a bout with a lingering virus and know how debilitating this can be.

Poor kid. All the hard work he did in the off season, and  now he can't play his senior season of HS football. Darn shame. I hope he recovers soon enough to play a couple games and maybe compete in an all star game.

If he had to contract Mono, it should have been in January, after his HS football career was over.

Mono has done this before. In '01-'02 MIke Cammalleri was having a Hobey-candidate type season (Minnesota D Jordan Leopold wound up winning it that year) when he contracted Mono right after World Juniors. He played in a rather discouraging home split against Bowling Green and then sat for two months; Michigan hockey fans, nervously eying the already tenuous pairwise position of the team, worried that the NCAA tournament streak was over.

The team didn't lose a CCHA game again. Cammo was fine--he came back for the playoffs and beat LSSU in the first round pretty much single-handedly (Michigan did lose the first game), then scored both goals in the semi-final OT win over Ohio State.

Tough break for Shane, but he'll be able to get back on his feet soon and start getting ready for Michigan.

He was a 5-star OL when he committed to Michigan, and came down with mono at the start of his freshman year. He probably would have redshirted no matter what, but the mono (and I think a shoulder injury too) guaranteed it.

I hope either Bellomy or Devin Gardner pan out as a decent starter next year, because no matter how good a QB Shane is at this stage, the odds are against him coming in as a true freshman and stepping into the starting QB spot right away. He won't be an early enrollee, and it's conceivable that with the mono now, it might be next summer or even fall before his strength and playing weight are 100% back to normal.

Verska was my coach in high school for a year (back when he coached for AA Huron), and he's not one to let you sit out a game if he has a choice about it.  He's definitely one of those coaches that is more in the mold of Jon Voight in Varsity Blues (of course toned done a lot by actually being likeable outside of practice/games and without the statue and championships).  So in essence, if Paul Verska isn't expecting someone back for the rest of the year, well then you can bet he ain't playing the rest of the way.

You’re a Huron guy?  Sweet – so am I – class of 1991.  I was no athlete though –  suffice it to say that two of me wouldn’t equal a walk-on safety.  But I did take Physical Fitness my senior year second semester for my gym requirement, and Coach Verska taught the class.  It was basically a way for him to do spring training with the football team, as I was the only non football player in the class.  He and the rest of the team were all really cool and I had a moment of glory during a scrimmage where I caught a deflected hot read over the middle and broke my glasses for my troubles.

(I humbly await the board's 'cool story bros')

Also - were you part of the Huron team that made it to the state finals in 98 or 99 or whenever it was?  If so I took my little brother (or not so little; he was the crew team capt. :P ) to watch you guys at the Silverdome!

And honestly, he isn't going to show something to us this year we didn't already know, especially with the team around him.  I wish Borges could just give him the playbook now.

Sometimes benign and you don't know you have it. Sometimes really severe requiring hospitalization and prolonged treatment over weeks and months.

Realistically, even if he were only out a few weeks there will be a significant loss of conditioning and it would take at least a couple more weeks to get into shape after that.  So you'd be looking at maybe 6 weeks before he comes back and the season will be over then.

Long term, there should be no issues and I'm sure Shane will be back in the travel circuit again working on his game. It is a real shame for him as I'm sure he wants to play and I hope he feels better soon.

Mono definitely could take him out for the season. If its serious it could legitimately not be safe for him to play for 1-2 months depending on if his spleen stays enlarged for that time. Even when it is technically safe for him to play because his spleen is back to normal, he will be drained and extremely tired. I hope for his safety that he doesn't go back and play before he's healthy though, because an enlarged spleen is life threatening.

Most Athletes who contract mono should refrain from contact sports for 1 to 2 months to reduce the risk of splenetic rupture. Shane will probably start non-contact drills in a few weeks. Basically the high school football season is over at the end of 6 weeks. I wish he could finish high school early and enroll at Michigan in January. If not, he will have the spring and summer to get back into playing shape.
