Serious idea: Hire Mike Tice to Consult.

Submitted by stephenrjking on
Of all the issues afflicting this year's team, the largest is clearly the offensive line. All of our complaints about coaching reduce to how we think the coaches should respond to the fact that the OL is a dumpster fire. If the line were good, Michigan would be undefeated, the wins against Akron and UConn would've been comfortable, and we would be happy right now. So what to do? I suggest (because I'm sure that DB and BH were just waiting to read a blog post an idea like this) that Michigan hire Mike Tice as a consultant for the rest of the year. Tice is not working right now, but was most recently the OL coach for the Bears and of course has head coaching experience with the Vikings. Michigan's offensive line is terrible, and most of us think Funk should be fired, but that isn't realistic mod-season. Still, they could use another set of eyes to see how the line is playing and perhaps help with a few mid-course corrections, and Tice would be terrific for that. So he has the expertise and the need is there. But, importantly, he does not threaten anyone's job--he's an NFL guy and nobody should have to worry about him moving into Brady's office. It would be safe to assume that he will bolt for the NFL ASAP--and that's okay. For the rest of this season he can offer Michigan's OL some much needed help, and offer the staff a different perspective. Brady and Brandon should look into this move or one like it. There's still a bye coming. Something needs to change.

I wouldn't hire any OL coach who hasn't CONSISTENTLY coached a Top 10 rushing college football team. Period.

Picking a pro coach is a crap shoot. There's no consistency there because of personnel, etc. The top rushing team in the NFL has been different every year since 2006 (Atlanta Falcons led 2004 - 2006 back to back)

Possibly. It's also not like Hoke is gonna come out and say ''Oh yeah the offensive line is GARBAGE!'' If this shit is the same by the end of the season, you can bet Brandon will feel the heat from the fans to make a change. Obviously is worked for msu since they got rid of Roushar.

I know he's at Arkansas, but Sam Pittman did a heck of a job here in Knoxville. Oh, crap: he's making 500,000 a year. Oof. I'd love to get a combination of Jim Chaney and Pittman to Ann Arbor, though. Lots of things have gone wrong in Knoxville, but those two guys were pretty dang good.

Its the plays not the players or their coaching. LBs are coming down and filling running lanes. Teams are selling out because they know we cant pass and when we do, we throw picks.

I like the consultant idea but not a fan of Tice.  I think Alex Gibbs would be a great consultant.  I think he came in during the Mike Hart years for an offseason.  It seemed to help.  He is more of a zone blocking guy and I don't know if that's really the direction Hoke wants to go.  I don't know if we have choice at this point.  I don't think we really have the horses up front to base/drive block the rest of the Big Ten this year.  Actually I know we don't based on the games we have played so far.  I definitely don't think an outside opinion could make things any worse at this point.
