Senior Leadership Trip - A Preview

Submitted by MGoShoe on

In advance of the wave of stories that will inevitably come out about the football team's senior leadership trip, here are a few tweets and photos from the players.

I'm guessing that like year, the youth camp was done in Pasadena in conjunction with a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Got a great opportunity to work with a tremendous group of young kids w/ these seniors! I was even given the honor of debriefing the young lads and leading the victors! One of the greatest experiences of my life! #goblue instagram.com/p/aAAFK-TVEs/

And in Coronado for a day of fun in the sun and sand with the Navy SEALs.

Leadership and Mental Toughness training done by the US Navy Seals. I couldn't of asked for a better experience! instagram.com/p/aCJpqUoRQS/

This is the culmination of a few days filled with many tests both mental and physical! But above all this is a group of men that became better leaders, teammates, and people! As a result, in these few days, we all took a gigantic step toward becoming the men we would want our daughters to date! #seniors #team134 #leaders instagram.com/p/aCFjiRzVFk/

More and more impressed with him the more I see/hear.  Clearly has strong leadership skills.  Great head on his shoulders.  Humble.  An excellent communicator.

If the offensive line can hold their own, we're going to score a lot of points.

Does anyone have any idea what he's studying?  Not that I wouldn't be impressed with graduating with a General Studies major in 3 years and moving on to whatever else, but I'd be even more impressed with a Political Science major and moving on to graduate school in Pubic Policy or something of the nature.  I'd probably guess Sports Management, just based on him being a football player.  Nothing wrong with that.  Just love to hear about players, especially big name scholarship players, bucking the convention and studying something a little less football-y.

That would be my guess. So he's actually beyond a senior. I'd say he earned the right to go on the senior trip by graduating in 3 years. In addition, he's going to be an important leader on the team by virtue of his playing quarterback so it's important for him to be there both for himself and the team.

It would be difficult to come up with a better leadership and teambuilding exercise than something like this, from the look of it. Just like last year, it seems to be an extension of the notion of having your leaders - the seniors - set the example by showing them what is expected through a trip like this. Hopefully, like last year, we will get to hear some interviews and see some snippets of the exercises in time.

Thanks for sharing these, MGoShoe. It is great to see the leaders and best becoming that much better.

I really enjoy Hoke's approach to coaching.  He does so many things that give these guys not only amazing learning opportunities, but things they will look back on later as once in a lifetime opportunities.  There is no stone he won't turn over to turn these guys into not only quality football players, but quality people.  Great stuff!

and was never recruited by any football programs (so take this for what it is worth), but seeing things like this as a recruit or as a parent of a recruit would be something I'd take as real evidence of a program actually caring about developing their players instead of "oh don't worry, we'll take good care of your son on & off the field" which almost every coach out there says.  Impressive stuff, Hoke & Co.

We are not perfect. However, unlike Ohio, i believe in dignity and values before wins. Sacrificing dignity for victory has been their M.O. for decades. Hence why their last few coaches have been fired shamefully. That IS the Michigan difference.

I get your point and all, but did cooper get fired for anything particularly bad? I could be wrong, but I thought they canned him because he couldn't beat us, and not any sort of big indiscretion. I don't doubt that there was shady stuff going on under him, but I don't remember anything big or shameful coming out during his tenure

Do other teams do this? I'm wondering if it's a unique privilege for Hoke because he has some kind of connection to the seals (I think?) or if other teams just haven't wised up and started copying everything Hoke does (I know I would).

He is a senior and the starting QB. Really awesome bonding experience for seniors. If you have made it that far, starter or not you earned the right too challenge yourself to the highest degree. Also provides alot of perspective for these kids. More to life then football, and for them to step back and see that, is great. These are the reasons Hoke is my kinda guy. An example of why I'm "All In" for this staff.

I really like the fact that the Seniors get to experience some of the S.E.A.L team training, but I think the youth camp they do is a chance for our seniors to show youngsters, what Michigan men are really all about.
