Senior Bowl Day 1 observations from around the interwebz
Was perusing the Atlanta Falcons blog (SB Nation Falcoholics) and saw a Day 1 recap from one of the writers there. So I did a little googling for more. Not much out there that I could find, but Smith getting some positive press, and at least one person thought Wormley looked decent out there.

- Ryan Glasgow looked really stiff today. When he had to flip his hips in the pass rush drills he really struggled. His teammate at Michigan, Chris Wormley, was fairly impressive today. He's not the most athletic player, but he's polished and really understands how to create leverage.
WR Cooper Kupp vs. CB Jourdan Lewis is going to be my favorite match-up all week. Both guys compete like they're the best player here.

31" arms. That's a win for Lewis.

- Michigan's De'Veon Smith is the best running back in pass protection at the Senior Bowl. He proved himself at the Shrine Game last week and is already off to a solid start in Mobile. He also caught the ball well again to start this week. Jaguars running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley may pound the table for him come draft weekend.

Michigan men: The afternoon North practice seemed like an Ann Arbor reunion of sorts. Seven former Wolverines are on the North roster, which has to be some kind of record. WR Amara Darboh, LB Ben Gedeon, DT Ryan Glasgow, G Kyle Kalis, CB Jourdan Lewis, RB De’Veon Smith, and DE Chris Wormley are all trying to impress pro teams this week.

Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis also showed the same feisty man coverage skills that saw him allow only 31.7 percent completions into his coverage last season (second-best in the FBS). Perhaps his biggest win was coming in at 5-foot-10 in the weigh-in, one of the few players whose listed height from college matched reality — that should keep help him in the evaluation process.

The Jaguars have Yeldon and Chris Ivory under contract for 2017. Maybe they're ready to cut their ties with Denard Robinson, but there isn't a whole lot of room there to draft De'Veon Smith unless it's pretty late.

nobody here in Jacksonville is enamored with either of Ivory or Yeldon, and Denard is a non-factor who probably will be let go.

I agree that they could take a big-time back, but I just think they need to address other positions in the draft. Either take an elite player like Fournette/Cook, or wait until the 7th round/UDFA to get another running back.

Smith is a potential 3rd down back option.

I bet King is still running. Probably back in Iowa City by now

I like the weird situation in sports evaluation where Lewis' biggest win of the day was being the height that he is.
January 25th, 2017 at 1:45 PM ^
I know, right? The fact that they seemed excited that his height was in fact his height stood out to me too.
No one has ever asked me, "What's your height?" or asked for a measurement, and when it comes out that I am all of 5'9", no one has said, "THAT'S SUPERB!".

I guess you've never been on a dating app.
Apparently it's ok for a girl to say "only guys over 6ft". But a guy should never say "no girls over 200lbs". Dating apps are the worst.

How girls see 5'11" vs 6'0" :

Now it's been a long time since i've been on a dating site (the apps didnt exist yet!) but they all had 'body type' and pictures and you were well within your rights to not email the big girls. Granted you had to be cognizant of the 'myspace angles' pics and had to mentally uptick every body type, skinny or athletic might actually mean average, average meant chubby, chubby meant huge, etc etc.

I was single, I had women asking for my "measurements" all the time.
Being truthful wasn't all it would seem to be.

Good stuff. Didn't realize JD was close to 190 lbs.

had a big breakfast.
January 25th, 2017 at 2:11 PM ^
I just read "NFL Confidential" not long ago, and the author ("Johnny Anonymous") kept talking about how he was supposed to get to 285 lbs. Every morning he ate a huge breakfast and refused to go poo-poo until after he weighed in. Otherwise, if he was too light, he was afraid the team would cut him.

and flipping hips in Pass rush drills...
Um.
Can someone explain this and how this is a particular detriment at the interior D-Line spot?
Burst and power seem to be #1. If you need to flip your hips at NT - you've probably already shot yourself out of the play.
Just my 0.02.

for posting this, +1 informative.
To be honest though, I kind of prefer Glasgow's technique of just breaking whatever's in front of him and tossing it aside.

My favorite photo from last year of Glasgow vs. MSU's front:

Its a pass rush drill, how quickly can you change up if your first move gets beat
January 25th, 2017 at 2:06 PM ^
thank you. I get the concept - but it seems less important for Interior DL than edge rushers.
In my experience on the DL (CSB!) - on the interior - you get "committed" very quickly and don't often have time for a major directional shift. You've already blown up to a spot and it is super difficult to switch directions - especially against Double-Teams.
However, this is the extent of my High School interior DL experience. I was moved to OL for a reason. haha
January 25th, 2017 at 1:55 PM ^
NFL teams only dress 45 guys on gameday, so you dress maybe 7 DL total. Glasgow, while very good, wont be a star, so the odds are he's going to be a backup interior DL. To make a roster, it'd be best if he can play nose and 3T. It's why Michael Schofield got drafted - he was going to be a backup OL, so the fact that he could play guard or tackle was a huge plus.

Wasn't Martin a starter in Tennessee for a bit? Glasgow is better than Martin was for my money, just got diluted by having so many great linemen around him. Never bet against a Glasgow.

And that Glasgow wasn't the strongest but had a great motor, and played til the whistle.

I'll edit the OP if you can post the link.
Clearly, I didn't find that one (although I did come across one recap that was uniformly uncomplimentary of Michigan players, which I opted not to link)

I've also read about Glasgow that he is:
Scrappy
A gamer
Sneaky athletic
Gritty
A Winner
Has a high IQ
Plays the game the right way
Cerebral
A gym rat
and..
Gets the most out of his abilities
Much like Anthony Zettel...

The funny thing, Alum96, is that all those things actually DO apply to Glasgow!
Plus he's a good bargain for a team because his parents can do any needed surgery on him if needed, just like they did with Graham. :)

I am surprised. I see he is now projected in the 7th round or undrafted.
January 25th, 2017 at 5:41 PM ^
If he's still recovering and going through further rehab for his knee, then he might have a chance at making an NFL roster, even if it's not certain that he'd be drafted this year. Some NFL team has to be thinking that a good special teams player who's also a very good blocker could be worth the risk. He's probably the best bowler in the NFL Draft.
