Senior Bowl Day 1 observations from around the interwebz

Submitted by oriental andrew on

Was perusing the Atlanta Falcons blog (SB Nation Falcoholics) and saw a Day 1 recap from one of the writers there. So I did a little googling for more. Not much out there that I could find, but Smith getting some positive press, and at least one person thought Wormley looked decent out there.

  • Ryan Glasgow looked really stiff today. When he had to flip his hips in the pass rush drills he really struggled. His teammate at Michigan, Chris Wormley, was fairly impressive today. He's not the most athletic player, but he's polished and really understands how to create leverage.

WR Cooper Kupp vs. CB Jourdan Lewis is going to be my favorite match-up all week. Both guys compete like they're the best player here.

Michigan CB Jourdan Lewis 5100 188
31" arms. That's a win for Lewis.

- Michigan's De'Veon Smith is the best running back in pass protection at the Senior Bowl. He proved himself at the Shrine Game last week and is already off to a solid start in Mobile. He also caught the ball well again to start this week. Jaguars running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley may pound the table for him come draft weekend.

Michigan men: The afternoon North practice seemed like an Ann Arbor reunion of sorts. Seven former Wolverines are on the North roster, which has to be some kind of record. WR Amara Darboh, LB Ben Gedeon, DT Ryan Glasgow, G Kyle Kalis, CB Jourdan Lewis, RB De’Veon Smith, and DE Chris Wormley are all trying to impress pro teams this week.

Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis also showed the same feisty man coverage skills that saw him allow only 31.7 percent completions into his coverage last season (second-best in the FBS). Perhaps his biggest win was coming in at 5-foot-10 in the weigh-in, one of the few players whose listed height from college matched reality — that should keep help him in the evaluation process.

The Jaguars have Yeldon and Chris Ivory under contract for 2017. Maybe they're ready to cut their ties with Denard Robinson, but there isn't a whole lot of room there to draft De'Veon Smith unless it's pretty late.

I guess you've never been on a dating app.

Apparently it's ok for a girl to say "only guys over 6ft".  But a guy should never say "no girls over 200lbs".  Dating apps are the worst.

Here's a rough guide to "guy" heights on online dating sites (as related to me by a female friend): 6'0" and above >>> list actual height 5'10" or 5'11" >>> list 6'0" 5'7 - 5'9" >>> add at least one inch under 5'7" >>> list at least 5'7" no matter how far you are below the level

Now it's been a long time since i've been on a dating site (the apps didnt exist yet!) but they all had 'body type' and pictures and you were well within your rights to not email the big girls.  Granted you had to be cognizant of the 'myspace angles' pics and had to mentally uptick every body type, skinny or athletic might actually mean average, average meant chubby, chubby meant huge, etc etc.

Because according to my sources, they basically penciled him at 5'9" and 175 lbs before the measurement so to meet the minimum is huge for Lewis. He is viewed as an exclusively nickel corner but he may play at outside as a #2 CB. He isn't a first rounder due to CB depth and size. Likely late 2nd round to late 3rd round is what I'm hearing

I just read "NFL Confidential" not long ago, and the author ("Johnny Anonymous") kept talking about how he was supposed to get to 285 lbs. Every morning he ate a huge breakfast and refused to go poo-poo until after he weighed in. Otherwise, if he was too light, he was afraid the team would cut him.

and flipping hips in Pass rush drills...

Um.

Can someone explain this and how this is a particular detriment at the interior D-Line spot?

Burst and power seem to be #1.  If you need to flip your hips at NT - you've probably already shot yourself out of the play.

Just my 0.02.

thank you. I get the concept - but it seems less important for Interior DL than edge rushers.

In my experience on the DL (CSB!) - on the interior - you get "committed" very quickly and don't often have time for a major directional shift.  You've already blown up to a spot and it is super difficult to switch directions - especially against Double-Teams.

However, this is the extent of my High School interior DL experience.  I was moved to OL for a reason. haha

NFL teams only dress 45 guys on gameday, so you dress maybe 7 DL total. Glasgow, while very good, wont be a star, so the odds are he's going to be a backup interior DL. To make a roster, it'd be best if he can play nose and 3T. It's why Michael Schofield got drafted - he was going to be a backup OL, so the fact that he could play guard or tackle was a huge plus.

On NFL Network. Mayock et al had lots of praise for Glasgow; less for Wormley. They also thought Desmond King was too slow to play corner and that Lewis is a pure nickel corner. I think people are underestimating Lewis' toughness. He may not be big enough to cover Julio Jones but who is? I bet the Steelers would love to have Lewis on their team next time they play the Patriots. Dismissing a guy because he is 2 inches shorter than ideal height is exactly why there are so many misses in the draft.

If he's still recovering and going through further rehab for his knee, then he might have a chance at making an NFL roster, even if it's not certain that he'd be drafted this year. Some NFL team has to be thinking that a good special teams player who's also a very good blocker could be worth the risk. He's probably the best bowler in the NFL Draft.
