Seminole Fail

Don't know if this is Board worthy, but it really pissed me off, especially since it was coming from the Redneck Riviera. Just read the "What it takes to be consistently successful in College Football" post Link: http://www.tomahawknation.com/2010/2/9/1302407/what-it-takes-to-be-cons… A quote from the article: " Michigan is similar to Notre Dame in the fact that they have tough admission standards and were basically run by a coach who hasn’t surprisingly found work since being fired. I don’t see Michigan rising to elite status again and that seems to be fine by Michigan fans since the only thing they care about is one game a year (OSU). " Is this wrong on so many levels? 1. While our admission standards are probably tougher than some lower schools, like, say, Florida State...I don't think that they've gotten in the way of our program like they would at somewhere like, say, Stanford. Exhibit A - We admitted Carson Butler, Cissoko etc. 2. Lloyd Carr was fired? Didn't know that. And it's a damn shame he hasn't found work again yet...hahaha 3. We're not returning to elite status again? Would've said the same thing about Bama a few years ago, or Florida during the Zook area. Or OSU during the Cooper era. Miami before Coker. USC before Caroll. Or Florida State during Bowden era! 4. The only thing we care about is OSU? While it's the biggest game, no doubt, there are higher aspirations in Ann Arbor than the Buckeyes. Fucking idiot.

My father in law has routinely said to me that he wouldn't care if the team went 1-11 if their lone victory was Ohio State. I don't get it. In fact it makes me a little bit angry when he says it. But given their fact checking regarding Lloyd Carr, I wouldn't be surprised if the one Michigan fan they know also happens to be a part of this lunatic fringe. Ace reporting at its best.

What do you expect? The author likely attended Florida State... a school that is significantly worse than both Michigan State and Ohio State academically.

Michigan is similar to Notre Dame in the fact that they have tough admission standards and were basically run by a coach who hasn’t surprisingly found work since being fired. I don’t see Michigan rising to elite status again and that seems to be fine by Michigan fans since the only thing they care about is one game a year (OSU).
Similar != exact. Michigan IS similar to ND in almost every way except Lloyd Carr oversaw success while after Holtz ND had failure. Had Lloyd been like Bob Davie after the Moeller incident we're probably just like ND. For an outsider that doesn't care about Michigan, the Michigan ND parallels are obvious.
1. While our admission standards are probably tougher than some lower schools, like, say, Florida State...I don't think that they've gotten in the way of our program like they would at somewhere like, say, Stanford. Exhibit A - We admitted Carson Butler, Cissoko etc.
Nah, UM admits anyone at the NCAA minimum just like the FSU's of the world. The difference is that UM typically won't sign players that don't qualify ahead of time, and UM can afford to take fewer academic risks than most schools due to the talent available.
2. Lloyd Carr was fired? Didn't know that. And it's a damn shame he hasn't found work again yet...hahaha
Prevailing rumor is that Lloyd tried to retire after 2006 and Bill Martin and MSC begged him to return.
3. We're not returning to elite status again? Would've said the same thing about Bama a few years ago, or Florida during the Zook area. Or OSU during the Cooper era. Miami before Coker. USC before Caroll. Or Florida State during Bowden era!
First, it's Da U before the Butch Davis era. OSU was elite under Cooper, they just couldn't beat Michigan. OSU wins the MNC in 1996 (Rose Bowl against Arizona State) if they hadn't lost to Michigan the game before. Bowden built FSU out of nothing, weathered the rise of Miami, but not the rise of Miami AND Florida, plus his coaching skills dropped a bit. No one said Florida wouldn't return to elite status during Zook era because the talent Florida has was awesome, Zook just couldn't coach for shit. Bama had a horrible coach one after another, once they got a good one they started winning big. Notice, each school that "returned to elite status" is located in a hugely talent rich state. Michigan is not. Notre Dame is not. Oklahoma is not (if you want to argue they are currently slipping, I wouldn't). Nebraska is not (Pellini can coach D, but they have no offensive talent and it's obvious). Tennessee is not. What would you say about these schools above? You'd obviously say they aren't returning to elite status if you'd say the same about the aforementioned schools. What, exactly, is your proof that Michigan falls into the first set of schools (returned to elite status) and not the second set of schools (still not returned to elite status)?
4. The only thing we care about is OSU? While it's the biggest game, no doubt, there are higher aspirations in Ann Arbor than the Buckeyes.
Not really true. Everything hinges on that game. All higher aspirations rely on beating the Buckeyes. A win over the a Buckeyes squad salvages a bad season, highlights an average season, and caps an excellent season. A loss to the Buckeyes is the nadir of a bad season, the reason a season is average, and would be a huge drag on an excellent season as it would likely be the difference between conference champ or MNC game. The Buckeyes are the measuring stick for Michigan football, it's a fact. Michigan fans might not be OSU obsessed like OSU fans are UM obsessed, but for a couple weeks a year, it's 2 sides of the same coin. Losing to MSU is irritating because their role is little brother. Losing to Notre Dame is annoying because they are like a similar cousin you spar with. Losing to Ohio State is enraging because they are your mortal enemy that you are better than in almost everything, except the thing that matters the most. In conclusion, I'm not sure the FSU guy is the "fucking idiot". EDIT: Holy shit this is cfaller TL;DR quality.
