Semi OT - Vulfpeck

Submitted by UM Fan in Nashville on

This is only 'semi-OT' because this band is, what i call a Throw Back Funk band, from Ann Arbor and are UofM students.

I love hearing about creative ways to get around the low royalties for streaming and came across this article http://policymic.com/articles/89091/a-scrappy-young-band-just-outsmarted-spotify-for-20-000-to-give-their-fans-free-concerts.

To sum up the article, this band decided to use the $0.005 (really $0.007) per stream from Spotify to create an album "Sleepify" which was nothing but silence.  They messaged their fans to stream the album on contiunous loop so they would get the royalties to fund a tour.  Spotify gave them props for their creativity, but pulled the album.

So I started doing some exploring of this band, and they are AMAZING. Great gospel rifs and pulls of the Herbie Hancock funk era.   And they look like they have a blast jaming out!

I figured with this being a UofM blog, you all could help support these guys locally.  I've already messaged them letting them know Nashville would be a great spot for them to have a few shows.  I'd love to see them get a spot on Bonnaroo eventually, they'd kill it!

These guys are great. Thanks for sharing. I'm always on the lookout for new music from bands/artists that actually have, ya know, talent (no disrespect to pit bull or Kesha fans out there). This stuff is perfect to have on while working or reading. Any idea of they plan to play in DC at some point?

I know their front man Jack from school, he's hilarious and super talented. I still have a copy of the "facebook boogie" he made freshman year for shits and giggles.
