Semi-OT - Purdue drubs MSU by 20 (corrected)

Submitted by Bluestreak on

Purdue beat the shit out of MSU to beat them 67-47 at East Lansing.

I am not sure if this is good or bad for UM - since our win against them when we play them may mean less in the eyes of the selection committee and at the same time their overall resume looks worse than ours at this stage.

Thoughts?

Purdue State University?

In seriousness, I actually would have preferred an MSU win which was generally opposed by most others.

Regardless, we still need to beat them next weekend which likely sees us in to the 4/5 game against Illinois. Beat the Illini and we should be good. Hell, lose to the Illini and we might still backdoor our way in given how soft the bubble is.

What UM can control in their own right. Joe Lunardi has every bubble team wetting themselves giving everyone a sense of backing into a tourney spot. Give me a MSU victory and one in the BTT we will be all set. I see that team (MSU) is WEAK. If youre scared of Kebler, Thornton and Sherman then youre scared of everything.

I thought it was really funny in the "old days" of the 16-team, tournament.  It took two wins to make the Final Four.  The regions used to actually be regional, in case anyone wonders why they are called that.  Here are the teams UCLA beat to get to the Final Four during their 60's-70's run when the tournament was still 16 teams:

1964: Seattle U, San Francisco

1965:  BYU, San Francisco

1967:  Wyoming, Pacific

1968:  New Mexico State, Santa Clara

1969:  New Mexico State, Santa Clara

1970:  Long Beach State, Utah State

1971:  BYU, Long Beach State

1972:  Weber State, Long Beach State

1973:  Arizona State, San Francisco

In 1974, they went to 25 teams, all conference champions, and went regional with a play-in round for lower-seeded teams and minimal displacement.

1974: Dayton, San Francisco

in 1975, it went to 32 teams, had at-large teams, and they had to play three games to get to the FF.

1975:  Michigan (Ouch), Montana, Arizona State

1976:  San Diego State, Pepperdine, Arizona

It may have been easy getting in, but it was easier getting out: Indiana beat them on the way to the Indiana/Michigan final.

It obviously wasn't intentional, but under the old method, UCLA had the easiest road to the Final Four.  They were so much better than everyone else that it didn't matter, but I am glad the current system tries to be as fair for everyone as they can.  If you get to the Final Four under the current system, you definitely had to play a lot of great ball to get there.

After the game, Summers said MSU is running fewer plays for him, and that "I never would have imagined that, but I've got to roll with it."

“We’ve tried to fix the defense, we’ve tried to fix the offense, (and) the energy,” Summers said. “Maybe it’s something else. It’s not my place to say certain things. We’ve tried to fix everything with us.”

As easy as it is to root for Michigan this year, how in the world does anyone root for the human garbage in EL?

...and I really love your signature text.  But I digress.

One of my fondest themes/hopes/predictions since last summer (irony alert) has been that the players would first tune Izzo out and eventually turn on him because they know he was going to abandon them if the price was right.  It looks like it is happening ahead of schedule.

And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy or a nicer team.

Purdue beat the shit out of us at home too. Sure, that was before THJ decided to start playing like an All-American, but Purdue is very good.

With that said, MSU did look like complete crap. Everyone's focusing on Summers' struggles, but Green's really gone down the tubes since his triple-double against PSU. Even before then, he was hit or miss for most of the Big Ten season. I guess that sort of thing happens towards the end of the season when you're playing 30 pounds overweight.

Green isn't 20 lbs overweight. He's just a husky dude. He has a great motor and rebounds great for being, essentially, a short center (6'8" IIRC). Dude is a beast, and I'd take him in a heartbeat. He is MSU's emotional leader and is someone to fear if they ever get realy motivated. He is, hands-down, the only person keeping MSU alive right now. I think Kalin, while playing solid, has checked out mentally. Summers has checked out, but is playing like garbage. Thornton/Kebler just aren't that good, and Appling/Roe haven't developed yet.

Here's to hoping that our 6 days rest doesn't turn out to be too much rest. I want to crush them while they're down, and officially turn the basketball recruiting tide in the state.

I agree with everything you've said, just wanted to point out that Green is definitely more 6-6 than he is 6-8.  The dude is a warrior, though, and I'd love to have him.  Any team would.  He's a glue guy who also happens to be very talented.

Beilein recruited Green pretty hard after he took the job here, and there was mutual interest.  If Beilein had just had more time, he may well have landed him.  Green would be a great fit in our offense with his perimeter touch.
