Semi OT: Is Michigan about to hire a famous comic book character.

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

So this weekend I saw an article online with the-newspaper-whose-name-we-dare-not-speak talking about the potential hiring of former M football player and Associate AD and now current UConn AD Warde Manual to fill the permanent AD role with Michigan. Nothing interesting in the article itself but the picture attached caught my eye and I couldn't figure out why:

Warde Manuel

Then I picked it up.  Do any of you all watch the Netflix series Daredevil? Please tell me that this picture does not look eerily like Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin character:

Well, if President Schlissel finally pulls the trigger and names Warde the AD, we've got a great nickname for him.

Back to you're regularly scheduled recruiting talk.........

Yeah, I saw just saw that after I posted and that's a good thing. Goyer has some good ideas and he is a good starting point, I think, but I wouldn't want him to have total control over the script, which, with a guy like Snyder (who is more of a "im gonna leave you akone while i work on the visual flair" kind of guy) would worry me.

Interesting thought. FWIW, there is a meeting with Jim Hackett on Thursday for students to give the AD views from their perspective. The invitation is premised with "With the search for a new Athletic Director underway..."

Later in the invitation: "Student voice into the future of Michigan Athletics is very important as we look forward to welcoming a new Athletic Director to campus and supporting the historic past and dynamic future of our programs."

I can't look at Dinofrio without thinking of him in his underwear in the head about to shoot Matthew Modine. "This is my rifle! There are many like it but this one us mine!!!"

...my initial thought was, "Sounds great. Former Michigan football player, so that's a major plus." Then I remembered that the same applied to DB Dave Brandon. Apples and oranges as Manuel is clearly an experienced and competent AD. Still not over DB DB I guess.

About the only similarity is that they both were on the football roster under Bo.

Warde                   v.                   Brandon

Actually played                                  Rode the pine

Worked in M AthDept before                Not so much

Worked in Athletics whole career         Hucked bad

                                                         pizza most of

                                                         career

Warde worked his way up for years with the M A.D. and then sserved as SUNY Buffalo's AD and UConn's AD and has done nothing but distinguish himself. Hell, Buffalo was sort of good at football for 10 seconds under Warde's watch. No comparison.

It gets worse for Brandon and better for Manuel - Warde Manuel was not at any point the CEO of Valassis, which is one of the world's largest distributors of inserts, circulars and other wastes of valuable paper that made the Sunday paper a deadly projectile when flung from a slow-moving beater car as it was on my street.

It's too bad that any of us allow ourselves to let David Brandon taint the ex-Michigan football player pool.  Brandon is an outlier who called Bo his "mentor" while doing pretty much the opposite of what Bo would have done in every situation.

Never has one POS gotten more "mileage" out of riding the bench than David Brandon.
