Semi OT: Have You Met "This Guy" Thread

Submitted by jsquigg on

I was watching the game at a BWW today since the game was during my normal work hours.  I ran into "stereotypical fan guy."  He was nice enough, but in talking with him during the game I found myself hating his opinions.  "Jordan Morgan is soft."  "GR3 is a head case."  This guy even suggested that Belein might bolt for a bigger job.  I bet he's called into the Huge Show a few times....  I'm not against criticizing the team you love, I just hate generic and generally inaccurate critiques by the typical know it all fan.  I'll take a high 60% shooter who rebounds and plays his heart out defensively any day.  Anyone else run into "that guy?"

"These guys" are everywhere. I had season tickets (for football) a couple years ago and had to bite my tongue every game. Just because people are fans or watch the games doesn't mean they know what the hell they are talking about. That's why I love coming to places like MGoBlog and UMHoops. It's for fans who want to learn more about the game and team they love without being bombarded by the "LCD drivel" that places like ESPN and 97.1 The Ticket push.

Since I have discovered this blog I find myself fighting the urge to constantly correct guys like this because I don't want to be that guy either.  Like someone wrote above, I just smile and nod, but I also make sure to ask if they have ever read this blog.

Not a Michigan fan but one of my friends who went to ND was at all my tourney viewing parties last year and kept saying Michigan didn't have a chance because they live and die by the three. It was so irritating. It's not living and dying if you make em all. That's just living. Also Trey Burke to the rack and McGary pick and roll were in abundance.

I heard Beilein might take the Arizona State job before the NCAA tourney.

NOT!!!

He appears to love what he's doing and where he's doing it.  Last year in Atlanta he told me "The best is yet to come."  And I believe him.

Everybody's got an opinion.  It's always been the case but with social media it makes it worse; go read a "comments section" on just about anything these days (including a game thread here at times).  Anyway, I agree with the above:  It seems as though most people have no fucking clue what they're talking about with a select few that really are in the know and have informed opinions, know good facts about players/sports/etc..  There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground.  Also, I can count on one hand the people I know who are in the latter category, which helps explain a little below.

I mentioned in a thread recently, I don't go out much for games...really at all.  If I do, it's for teams I'm not emotionally invested in.  Michigan games are viewed at home with the gf, who knows more about "stuff" than the average jackass at BWW or the local watering hole.  At home I can be myself and talk shop...with myself and at times this blogosphere, where some of you are ridiculous but for the most part, even differing opinions are at least thoughtful and make for good conversation unlike BWW broski.

Honestly, it's no less grating than the "I'm going to spout a bunch of half-baked knowledge that sounds vaguely like something Brian posted yesterday" guy, who almost always manages to squeeze in "Hey, do you read MGoBlog? That's where I get all my information. You should really check it out."

(facepalm)

I have a new self-imposed in-game rule: no going on MGoBlog. I get so pissed off at all the hate, vitriol, and cynicism spouted out during a game by the vast majority of my fellow fans. Even if we are losing, I want to at least hold out some hope that we can come back and that the sky is not falling. This is impossible if I participate in one of our game threads.

the games from my man cave instead of bars. The only people that can annoy me with their stupid comments are the TV announcers. And for them I have the mute button.

Michigan has our fair share of fair weathered "bad" fans, pessimisstic fans, misinformed fans, and generally arrogant/annoying fans.  I hate that they exist, but as long as they're ultimately cheering for Michigan...

I always wondered what a RCMB poster looked like if he rooted for UM.

The sad thing is, it's people like this that have an outsized influence on things in sports because they probably represent at least the vocal minority of the fanbase.  These are the goobers who scream on talk radio, bitch about "Michigan Men", and stop showing up to games when UM stops winning.  You should have asked him if he remembered to remove his tag from the hat he bought last year.

Fandom doesn't mean you have to always suffer through the horrible times; I hated watching this team when I was in school but did out of pride, but I respect those who just threw there hands up for a mediocre product but did so with an informed knowledge.  But like all bandgwagons, it has gotten pretty crowded recently, where all of these yahoos flood out from BWW and their "man caves" to talk about how much they love UM and this team.  No, you tool, you love a winner.  You probably also like the Yankees, the 49ers, and the Red Wings until they got "soft" and stopped winning Stanley Cups.  Oh yeah, and the Tigers are cool and you totally followed the team after 1984.

Okay, now I'm bleeding from the nose again.

I don't get the 11 up votes then coments that admit that we can all be that guy? I wouldn't down vote the OP, either. I do think, however it is a bit arrogant to talk about other people not knowing sports as if there were a manual on what to do when. If that were the case then there wouldn' t be much strategy.

Most of my friends that are into sports are these guys...

Constantly sharing stupid posts on facebook and other things like that... my god it is so annoying

Throwing their opinion out like it is fact, and then getting mad when people don't agree...

And you can never tell them they are wrong, because they KNOW
