Semi-OT: Gordon Gee has a sense of humor

Submitted by shorts on

So ... Ohio State president Gordon Gee caught some flak for his comments about Boise State and TCU (deservingly, in my opinion).

But at least he's got a sense of humor about it:

Gee told the Columbus Dispatch on Wednesday that he should not have gotten involved and "what I should do is go over to the surgical suites and get my foot extricated from my mouth."

"What do I know about college football?" he said. "I look like Orville Redenbacher."

Indeed.

It's his response to the general criticism he's gotten over the comments about Boise and TCU not having to play "murderer's row" schedules. I don't think it's necessarily directed at ESPN.

There's also this:

As for the comment about the "Little Sisters of the Poor," a Roman Catholic religious organization for women? Gee said he personally offered a mea culpa to a Little Sisters of the Poor home in Oregon, Ohio. "I sent a (personal) check to the Mother Superior up there," Gee said, "and invited her to a ballgame."

I think that has more to do with it than anything.  Gee's a Mormon, and I think he's fairly sensitive about not insulting religious groups.  My guess is that he didn't know there actually were Little Sisters of the Poor, and that he was mortified when he found out they existed.

I really, really doubt that Gee gives a shit what ESPN or anyone thinks of his remarks.

He may not know football, but is a madman on the badminton court.  His nickname is Commissioner Gordon because he brings down the justice.

has a picture of John  Belushi in Animal House in his office in his College sweatshirt. Any college president who does this has to be admired. I saw this in Time Magazine when he was promoting community college enrollment earlier this year.
